Nexus 5 vs iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 Video Shows Potential Size Difference

A new video shows what a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 could look like next to the iPhone 5s and top competition including Google’s Nexus 5 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

As we march deeper into 2014, we’re starting to hear a lot about a smartphone that’s expected to replace the iPhone 5s and challenge the best that the smartphone market has to offer. The device currently known as the iPhone 6 has seen a number of rumors leak in recent weeks with rumors pointing to everything from the iPhone 6 release date to its camera to its screen size.

Earlier this month, alleged iPhone 6 cases emerged showing off the device’s rumored new look inside plastic and silicon. These iPhone 6 cases emerged right after alleged iPhone 6 photos showed a front plate for an iPhone with a larger display and photos from a convention in Hong Kong revealed engineering samples from a case maker.

At the time, we pointed out that previous iPhone 6 leaks and these new iPhone 6 cases shared something in common: They are large enough to fit a 4.7-inch display. Apple might be keeping a tight lid on iPhone 6 details but the most reported iPhone 6 rumor is that Apple is going to upgrade to a 4.7-inch display on one iPhone 6 model this year.

Unbox Therapy managed to track down these alleged iPhone 6 cases and has displayed one of them next to the Nexus 5, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and the iPhone 5s to give prospective iPhone 6 buyers a look at how an iPhone around 4.7-inches in size will look next to some of the biggest names on the market.

If the case makers schematics are on point, then the iPhone 6’s size could be similar to the size of the Nexus 5. The Nexus 5 utilizes a 5-inch display, much larger than the iPhone 5s’ 4-inch display and smaller than the 5.7-inch full HD display that is found on the massive Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

As for the case itself, its volume buttons sport a new oval shape, but remain dedicated buttons and the power button is on the right side of the iPhone instead of on the top. Oval volume buttons may be a switch to accommodate a thinner iPhone, with rumors suggesting a 6.5mm to 7mm thick iPhone. The current iPhone 5s is 7.6mm thick and going thinner would prove problematic for volume buttons at the current size.

By shifting a power button to the right side, Apple would make it easier to reach this button on a larger device. Samsung uses this layout for the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S5, which use 5-inch and 5.1-inch displays respectively.

Even more interesting is that this new iPhone 6 button layout matches up with a report from Ming-Chi Kuo in early April. In a report to investors, Kuo predicts the major changes that he believes will be coming with the iPhone 6:

  • iPhone 6 Screen Size and Resolution – 4.7- inch (1334 x 750) 5.5-inch (1920 x 1080).
  • iPhone 6 Release Dates – 4.7-inch in September, 5.5-inch in Holiday season.
  • iPhone 6 Design – Power button on right, narrower bezels, larger iPhone 6 as two-hands needed.
  • iPhone 6 Camera – No major Megapixel bump, but added image stability.
  • iPhone 6 Specs – A8, 1GB RAM, Touch ID, 6.5mm to 7mm thickness, NFC.

Kuo’s report suggests Apple will push the power button to the right side of the device. This will be part of a plan to keep the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 positioned as a device that is one-hand friendly. Other supposed iPhone design changes include smaller bezels to keep the width of the device in check.

Consumers wanted a larger iPhone display as far back as 2012.

While these cases could be real, there is also a good chance that they won’t pan out. In 2011 a case company gambled on an iPhone case for a new iPhone with a larger screen and a new design. The prediction did not pan out and the 50,000 or so cases it produced wound up sitting around a warehouse, collecting dust.

iPhone 6 rumors almost exclusively point to a larger display. One iPhone 6 model is said to be between 4.5-inches and 4.7-inches in size. Another iPhone 6 variant is thought to be somewhere around 5.5-inches or 5.7-inches with HD resolution. Recent reports however suggest that the larger iPhone 6 may not arrive in 2014.

A report from Reuters casts doubt on a two-pronged release in 2014. The report claims that Apple may have delayed the larger iPhone and that it will be the 4.5-inch to 4.7-inch iPhone and that makes an appearance later this year. A more recent report from The Commercial Times suggests that the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 may have been pushed into 2015.

A 5.5-inch iPhone 6 may not arrive in time to compete with the Galaxy Note 4 on day one.

At least one iPhone 6 is expected to debut this fall though a specific date remains in the shadows and will likely stay there until much closer to Apple’s launch event. Apple’s last three iPhones were launched during the fall. The company’s WWDC event that used to serve as the iPhone’s launch pad is now used to show case software.

Apple recently announced dates for this year’s WWDC 2014 and said that it looks forward to sharing its “latest advances in iOS and OS X” with its developers. iOS 8, Apple’s new iOS update, is rumored to be making an appearance at the show.

Power button on the side is one reason I couldn’t live with the Nexus 5. I was constantly powering by accident when handling. This was especially a problem when taking landscape pictures. I hope the power stays on the top!
