Top 5 Smartphones to Consider Before Buying HTC One M8 [May, 2014]

The HTC One M8 is here and we consider it one of the best smartphones on the market. Before buying it though, there are some devices that we think smartphone shoppers definitely need to weigh against the brand new HTC One M8 before making the final commitment.

At the end of last year, we started hearing a whole lot about the devices that would populate the shelves in 2014. iPhone 6 rumors started to emerge, as did whispers about the Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8. Last year’s Galaxy S4 and HTC One were two of the best smartphones that money could buy and thus, these rumors stirred excitement amongst consumers. Unlike Galaxy S5 rumors, HTC One M8 rumors were pretty dead on.

As expected, the HTC One M8 isn’t a complete overhaul from last year’s HTC One, a device that many consider to be the best smartphone of all time. Instead, the HTC One M8 builds on the foundation left behind by its predecessor and adds some brand new features of its own including a larger display and new software.

The HTC One M8 has been on shelves at major U.S. carriers (including Verizon) since March and it remains one of the top choices available to those in the hunt for a brand new smartphone. So it has come as no surprise that many our friends, family members and readers are curious about HTC’s flagship.

They’re also interested in the competition. We’ve been asked a similar question many times in the past few weeks and it sounds something like this: “Well, if I were to want something other than the HTC One M8, what should I be looking at?” It’s a valid question and one that we want to answer today.

In an effort to steer as many people as we can in the right direction, we want to take a look at the five devices that we think need to be heavily considered before buying the HTC One M8.

Keep in mind, our list may differ from yours but these are the devices that Gotta Be Mobile editors have selected for recognition this month. We feel like they deliver the best, all-around package at the moment. This list will change from month to month as rumored devices get closer to announcement and announced devices get released.

Samsung Galaxy S5

Maybe the first device that consumers need to look at before buying the HTC One M8 is the Samsung Galaxy S5, one of its main rivals.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is the company's latest Galaxy S flagship and it replaces last year's Galaxy S4, one of the original HTC One's competitors.

Samsung's brand new flagship comes with all of the bells and whistles you'd expect from a high-end smartphone in 2014. It features one of the best displays ever and one that DisplayMate says bests the iPhone 5s' Retina Display, it comes with a speedy processor, design that is dust and water resistant, a solid camera, great battery life, and an improved software experience. It's also cheap on-contract if you go through Amazon.

Like the HTC One M8, the Galaxy S5 presents an all-around package that many shoppers will find suitable. We consider it to be one of the best smartphones on the market and those looking at the One M8 in May would be wise to compare the two. Fortunately, we've got you covered.

Our Galaxy S5 versus HTC One M8 buying guide will point you in the right direction though we highly recommend going hands-on with both before buying.
