Top 5 Smartphones to Consider Before Buying the iPhone 5 [May, 2014]

The iPhone 5 is no longer on sale through the Apple Store but that doesn’t mean that it’s no longer on sale. The iPhone 5 is still available on sites like eBay and thanks to solid hardware and software that will be getting updated for years to come, the device is still a viable option for those looking for a new smartphone. There are, however, some devices that we think prospective buyers need to take a look at before buying and here, we outline those smartphones.

In September of 2012, Apple delivered the iPhone 5, a smartphone with a complete redesign complete with an industrial aluminum design and a Lightning port. Apple’s 2012 iPhone also introduced a brand new 4-inch Retina Display, an improved processor, a better camera, and the company’s brand new iOS 6 operating system. It also delivered 4G LTE data to the iPhone for the first time.

The iPhone 5 served as the company’s flagship device for an entire year before the company took the stage last September and introduced the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c. Many expected the company to keep the iPhone 5 around as a budget option though the company surprisingly cut it from its lineup.

While the Apple Store only offers the iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c and the iPhone 4s, the iPhone 5 is still on sale at places like eBay, Craigslist and more. And while it’s getting older, the iPhone 5 is still a device that plenty of consumers are considering as their next smartphone.

Before buying the iPhone 5, there are some smartphones that we think buyers must consider for various reasons. In particular, we think there are five devices that consumers must take a look at before buying into Apple’s former flagship.

Keep in mind, our list may differ from yours but these are the devices that Gotta Be Mobile editors have selected for recognition this month. We feel like they deliver the best, all-around package at the moment. This list will change from month to month as rumored devices get closer to announcement and announced devices get released.

The first smartphone that prospective iPhone 5 buyers need to consider is the current iPhone, the iPhone 5s. We understand that most iPhone 5 buyers are thinking about price but the iPhone 5s might be worth coughing up the extra money.

The iPhone 5s comes with a better camera, a better 64-bit processor, and a Touch ID fingerprint reader for added security and convenience. It's a step up from the iPhone 5 and shoppers will want to rule it out as an option before settling on the iPhone 5 which is now considered a mid-range device.

The $100 price difference might be a bit much for some people but it's certainly worth considering given the difference in quality. Check out the iPhone 5s before buying the iPhone 5.
