Motorola DROID RAZR HD, MAXX HD Android 4.4 KitKat Problems and Fixes

Published

on

Earlier this month we received word that Verizon and Motorola were finally preparing to release the DROID RAZR HD, MAXX HD, and RAZR M Android 4.4.2 KitKat update, and last week it started to arrive for most users.

Like most updates the DROID RAZR HD Android 4.4 KitKat is rolling out in stages, which means not everyone received it at once. We’re getting multiple reports that the update started arriving on handsets late last week, and have continued to roll out during the weekend and into this week on all three devices.

With the Moto X and DROID Ultra out of the way, the aging DROID RAZR and MAXX HD lineup is now getting the absolute latest and greatest version of Android. There’s a lot of changes from Android 4.1 to 4.4, so read on to see what’s new, what issues some users are reporting, and how to fix them.

With any software update there is a chance it may cause small issues with certain apps or users, which is why most Motorola software upgrades go through a heavy testing phase. That being said, it looks like a few reports have started coming in that the DROID RAZR HD and MAXX HD Android 4.4 KitKat update has introduced a few bugs, and removed a couple of features as well.

The DROID RAZR HD, MAXX HD, and RAZR M all three are getting the latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat, but previously were running a nearly two year old build of Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.

Motorola and Verizon skipped multiple Android versions and jumped straight to the latest and greatest, and there’s tons of new features. Be sure and check out the link below to know what’s new in general, then continue on for a few fixes to the problems we’re hearing about.

Verizon posted a changelog and more details to its official support webpage, but it was rather light on details and didn’t reveal too much that users could expect. With an update this large there’s plenty of changes, and below we’ll mention a few we keep hearing about, problems, and potential fixes while we wait for more details from Verizon and Motorola.

The update to Android 4.4.2 KitKat should severely improve performance, which should also impact battery life for the better. We’re hearing a few complaints of poor battery life, and suggest rebooting the phone after the update. Sadly a software upgrade this big could cause a few issues, and a factory data reset may be in order, but this wipes all apps and data, and is a last resort.

Users can expect better performance, longer battery life, improved security, fullscreen mode, gesture keyboard options, emoji support, Google Hangouts for default SMS/MMS features and much much more.

Droid-RAZR-MAXX-HD-review-back-575x376

Two of the biggest complaints and questions we’re seeing or hearing so far is regarding a few things missing. Swype is no longer enabled by default, and the Calendar app appears to be missing. The latter being a big one if users can’t get calendar entries back, as that could be a loss of some important information.

Swype for typing is no longer installed (according to users) but you can head to the Google Play Store and download the stock “Google Keyboard” for a similar typing and gesture-based experience. SwiftKey is another excellent option, or just download Swype again and use it. Sadly it was removed without explanation, and we’ll look for more details from Motorola and Verizon.

This update complete removed the Calendar app. Note sure what to do, but will be letting Verizon know. Other than that, I love the update. The speed increase alone is awesome, and I love some of the other changes, too. I do, however; need that Calendar app back.

There’s also a Google Calendar in the Google Play Store, which was likely the option before and simply needs to be downloaded. Head to the app store and download Google Calendar and make sure it syncs, and that should have all your information and calendar entries saved.

The lockscreen unlock circle use to have options to quickly unlock the device to certain apps, which has been removed. Instead, head into settings > security > and enable lockscreen widgets. This will allow for full widgets to be placed right on your homescreen to instantly access apps or information.

We’re hearing the default notification LED has turned from Green to White, but download LightFlow from the Google Play Store for full customization if you’d like.

Swipe down from the top notification bar with two fingers instead of one. This brings up the Quick Settings menu to instantly turn on things like WiFi, Bluetooth, change brightness and much more, and is an awesome feature we’ve all been enjoying for more than a year on previous versions of Android. Speaking of quick settings, bluetooth pairing may need to be redone, but that shouldn’t be an issue

Read: Moto X in Walnut Wood Hands-on Video

We’re also getting reports of apps that keep “unfortunately stopping” or force closing. One in particular is home, meaning that the homescreen is crashing and users can’t even use the smartphone. Most likely the homescreen crash is an incompatibility with an app called LastPass. If so quickly swipe to the right after hitting ok on the crash popup, and head into settings to disable Lastpass under “accessibility” or there’s a new setting in the LastPass app itself to fix this issue, which arrived with Android 4.4.2 KitKat.

Last but not least is battery life. Android 4.4.2 KitKat should improve battery life and performance from the DROID RAZR HD, MAXX HD, and even the M, but there is a possibility of problems instead. Jumping so many Android versions in one major update could have a few settings scrambled, and a last resort could be a factory data reset.

If your device is sluggish or has terrible battery life after the update to KitKat, head into settings > battery > and see what’s taking up all the juice. If there doesn’t seem to be anything apparent, a factory data reset to clear the pipes and start fresh may be your best bet. This will erase the entire phone, so make sure you have everything backed up first.

The DROID RAZR HD lineup is still getting Android 4.4.2 KitKat, as it continues to roll out for all users, and we’ll report back once we have more details and information. Head into settings > about phone > check for updates if you still haven’t received KitKat yourself.

I have the Droid RAZR M and I do like KitKat but one of the things they took out was Facebook syncing with contacts. I have a few contacts missing from Facebook that I can’t get back in my people folder. The option is gone in settings. Why would they do that? I also miss the ability to either silence my phone or set to vibrate from the lock screen. That was a very quick and effective way to silence the phone.

I have the Maxx HD and since the update my GPS reception has gone from excellent to so poor that Gopogle Maps, Verizon Navigator and Waze are all useless for navigation.

I have the Razr M and think they completely botched this upgrade. My phone crashed after the update and so many settings were changed it was like using a completely different phone. Swype disappeared, apps weren’t working, etc. Verizon recommended a factory reset and although my phone said it had backed up within 24hrs, I lost over 400 pictures and other files on my phone. Since the factory reset, I have not been able to sync facebook with my contacts. The calendar app had disappeared as noted in this post. My homescreen kept crashing. I also downloaded Google Keyboard but noted in the permissions that it saves all of your data which I think is bizarre. It also does not have the same functionality as Swype. In short, it sucks. I hate it. I’m very good with technology and usually love the upgrades but they totally botched this one… Unfortunately Motorola has now lost me as a customer.

I’ve also had a few problems. One that is the most irritating is that I used to be able to hold down a text entry and it would highlight, then I could select multiple messages to delete. This feature is now gone and I have to delete one message at a time. Anyone know of a fix for this?

    • Shell

      05/23/2014 at 5:15 pm

Agreed, this update sucks !!! You have to delete information one by one instead of just holding down with multiple selections. Also my phone keypad looks awful and you can not differentiate back and forth text as they are all WHITE now. I HATE the update !!!! I called Motorola and voiced my opinions, and the shortfalls…. they did say that the update has A LOT of complaints. They are working on it.

To delete multiple text messages, press and hold the first text message you want to delete. The message “Choose conversations #” appears at the top of the screen. Continue to tap other text messages you want to delete, then click the trash can icon on the bottom of the screen. Confirm that you want to delete the text messages and all the text messages are deleted. Thanks to the guy who wrote the original note I saw on this new method and hope this note helps reduce frustration with the upgrade.

my HD doesn’t show the “choose conversations #” on my screen. I hate this upgrade! I can’t even answer my phone – it shows phone handle icon be doesn’t do anything when I press it. Just keeps ringing!

My calendar app was still in my apps. But I had to delete the new icon and place the old icon on my home page. The biggest problem I have is that the phone will not stay synced to my car. I have to add the device every time I get in my car. That’s huge to me. Anyone know how to fix this?

I got the message on my screen saying that @Verizon next OTA update is available. I started the download 4 hours ago and my phone is stuck at the Motorola splash screen. I went to my Verizon store and they didn’t know what to make of it. This is a Droid Razr Maxx HD.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

My Razr Maxx HD can not longer find my in Vehicle Bluetooth. So no hands free dial, talk or text. If I no fix then I will have to change phones. I also miss the ability to flush selected groups of messages instead of one at a time. EPIC FAIL!

I downloaded the update just this morning and it completely made my phone useless. Will not connect to the network, wifi, nada, nothing! I took to our local verizon and the very rude lady there informed me that I was still under warranty so they could just send me a different one. No explanation as to why my phone had completely crashed or anything, just get a new phone! I dont want a new phone I want the one I have to work! My husband then spent 3 hours this afternoon on the phone with customer service and still got no where….suggesting a factory reset….joy! If that still doesnt do the trick they will then send me a “replacement phone.” NOT HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I havethe RAZR m and the update has been great- EXCEPT my device will go into bouts where it will repeat the DROID voice over and over and over again (DROID, Droid DROID DRIOD DRIOD DRIOD) you get the point. The instances seem to be random but I’m not impressed because its happened several times during the night and it will not stop unless you turn the device off. Does anyone have Amy ideas on making it stop?? :(

    • Joe

      05/27/2014 at 6:21 am

Sarah – same thing with my wife’s phone…any updates on how to fix? I’ve rebooted, reset sounds, etc. Seems to happen with new notifications (e-mails/texts). The notification sound I’ve selected does not play…only the loud “DROID, DROID, DROID, etc.) over and over again.

      • Andre

        05/27/2014 at 8:10 pm

I can’t be sure this is a “fix”, but my wife’s Droid RAZR M has had the “DROID, DROID, DROID…” problem, too. The last time it occurred I noticed the Barnes & Noble Nook app’s icon was in the notification bar. I removed that app from the phone and the problem hasn’t occurred since then (it’s been a couple of days).

My Droid RAZR HD has had a number of issues, most annoyingly with location and wifi. I’ve come to believe that Motorola’s SmartAction utility doesn’t play well with Kit Kat. So, I’ve disabled it, and since then (a couple of days) the phone has behaved better.

I was using SmartActions to improve battery life by switching radios on and off based on my location. Hopefully, KitKat’s better battery management will offset the loss of this strategy.

Hmm… My land line has never needed an upgrade. Does what I want it to do, when I want to do it. If something ever did go wrong, they send a technician to me instead of me trying to go to them. A replacement phone is like $5.00. Don’t have to worry about battery life, because there isn’t any. Calls are crystal clear and understandable. I’ve haven’t had to upgrade, provision, download, reset, restore or trade in anything in over 20 years. Best of all, it works all the time, even when power is out. There’s something to be said about that.

The update installed on my RAZR Maxx HD without a hitch. I started having problems with the WIFI after the installation. It drops the WIFI connection and switches to 4G and will not switch back to WIFI until a power off/on. Very irritating. Anyone else having this problem?

      05/22/2014 at 12:14 pm

On my RAZR Maxx HD, the bluetooth is interfereing with the WiFi. As soon as I disabled the bluetooth, I could connect to WiFi. The trouble is, I use both, and need them to operate at the same time!

Same problem here with the RAZR M, and I am also looking for the setting to automatically connect to saved networks when they’re available. I don’t want to keep doing it manually (well, if that even worked).

After my RAZR Maxx HD updated to KitKat, the “Wireless & Networks” feature, DLNA sharing with Xbox, has vanished. I have a very nice, high quality home theater/7.1 surround sound system which utilizes the entertainment capabilities with my Xbox. I used the DLNA feature daily, to access my music, videos, pics and podcasts directly through my Xbox without having to use apps and such. It was nice to do this without having to ever touch the phone. The Xbox accessed it directly. Does anyone know if this feature is in fact gone, or is the DLNA setting located elsewhere?

I was on the phone with Motorola about the Facebook syncing issue, they said it was a KitKat issue and not a phone issue.I also have a nexus 7 and this is true. One way around that I found was an app called ubersync for facebook that works really well. You shouldn’t have to download another app for something that was working fine before but at least it got my contacts back.

I have the Droid RAZR M and after I upgraded to KitKat, my internet signal suddenly got weaker. Normally I get 3G or 4G at my house(using my Wi-Fi) and it went down to 1X. My friend has the HD and he said his internet signal wasn’t as strong as it normally is at a friend’s house either. I had reset my internet and rebooted my phone but I’m still getting 1X. If I turn off my Wi-Fi and use my data, I get 3G or 4G. I don’t understand why this is happening. I also don’t like the keyboard layout. Seems smaller and they switched a couple of the keys spots. I don’t like the colors in the conversations in messaging either. It seems confusing. Probably will downgrade back to Jellybean if I can’t fix the Wi-Fi issue.

    • barbara

      05/25/2014 at 12:49 pm

If your provider is Verizon, downgrading is not possible. Or so says the Verizon Wireless website. I wanted to do the same thing. Battery life on my RAZR MAXX HD sucks now.. have to charge daily where before a charge could last 3 days.

When using speaker phone, if you check something elsewhere like contact list, you have to hit 5 buttons to hangup. It would be nice if people would remember this is also a phone. I will get used to other things, but that of redundancy is maddening.

  23. Michael

    05/22/2014 at 8:22 pm

The update is a total piece of garbage that removed features I love. 1) It’s no longer possible to mute the ringer from the home screen without unlocking the phone. 2) Text message background is white. 3) It’s no longer possible to select multiple text messages before deleting them. 4) The green notification light for email and text messages is gone. I should not have to download an app to fix this.

The only new feature worthwhile gives you the ability to lock or reset your phone remotely if it’s lost.

Has anyone thought of fixing the calender function? I had a Samsung Charge before my Razr and it was possible to set the default view for the calender and I always had “day” as the default view. If I had to change my calender to show week or month, it always defaulted back to day when opened. That would be a worthwhile fix.

I can’t wait to downgrade back to Jellybean.

DON’T UPGRADE!!!!!!!! Kit Kat upgrade is useless. Features have been removed. Cant use the phone to dial out….dialer disappears after 3 seconds.Verizon and Motorola no help. They say that even after resetting the phone it may not fix issues. Why cant they make it so you can go back to the old version software?

After updating my Razr M, messaging keeps “stopping” unexpectedly. I’ve heard people talking about clearing the cache for the phone, but don’t know exactly what they’re referring too. Same with the factory reset, but I’m not ready to try that just yet. Pretty unhappy at this point but will ride it out until they come out with a hot fix or update.

  26. Andre

    05/23/2014 at 10:03 am

I’ve had many of the problems with the KitKat update as noted above (and some that weren’t mentioned), and I’ve had to reboot my phone more times in the last week than I had in the previous year and a half of ownership. I’d hoped that KitKat would improve the phone’s location services, specifically, how Motorola’s Smart Actions location event works — this is a very useful feature to me, but it works even more poorly than before.

The biggest, current, issue is with wifi. It’ll be running but won’t be actually connected to my home router. When I force it to connect, it’ll demand my WPA2 password, but won’t accept it. If I reboot the phone, it works (for a while).

Further, when it’s in this corrupted state I can’t turn wifi off. Before the update, if I found that wifi wasn’t working for some reason, cycling wifi off and on again typically cleared it up. Now, as with most everything, the only thing I can do is power the phone down, then power it back up. Even if that works, it’s only a matter of time before that problem, or a new one, surfaces. They should have included a “Restart” option in the power down dialog box.

Subtle improvements in performance are worthless if major functions are broken…

  27. JL

    05/23/2014 at 10:38 am

This update sucks….they took away swype and yes you can get it but now they want to charge you for it? Also, on my Razr HD when I would receive a text it would show the text on the main screen in the bubble where the time is shown. It still does that but when you retrieve that message and is no longer a “new” text, the text still shows in the bubble. Before it would automatically go away once you viewed the text. Also, the option to “discard a draft” in text messaging is no longer an option. If you want to delete a text message that you don’t want to send you have to delete each individual word. Cmon???

    • tracy

      05/23/2014 at 3:20 pm

Swipe down on the bubble and the text will flip to the back. Yes if you flip it again it will come back just keep flipping until it disappears. Not ideal but at least it’s a workaround.

      • JL

        05/23/2014 at 6:42 pm

yes I know…but once I read the text it should just go away like it did before. why do they change things that aren’t broken to make it more complicated.

I was wondering that same thing…hate having the old message still showing. I can’t even figure out how to get my phone to ring when it is locked! I feel like I have a whole new phone. I’m all for change and security, but I lost so much stuff that it’s like starting all over.

        05/27/2014 at 8:57 pm

HI, I saw a note from some guy about deleting old text messages. You can do it after the upgrade, but it’s different than the previous method. To delete multiple text message, press and hold the first text message you want to delete. The message “Choose conversations #” appears at the top of the screen. Continue to tap other text messages you want to delete, then click the trash can icon on the bottom of the screen. Confirm that you want to delete the text messages and poof – the messages are deleted. Thanks to the guy who wrote the previous note and hope his note and this note helps reduce frustration with the upgrade. The least Google could have done is provide people with a list of changes that will occur with their phone and where to get help on how to perform basic tasks (like deleting multiple text messages) so people wouldn’t be so frustrated. If I worked for Google — I would have pushed for more testing and better communication. I spent 4 hours last night trying to fix my phone and still can’t connect to my Bluetooth earpiece or car. My battery on my husband’s RAZR M phone only lasts for 35 minutes before he has to charge it – and he has turned off all apps. We spent another hour on the phone with Verizon today;after reviewing the 18 page document I created last night with all of the problems people were complaining about and describing the problems my husband and I were having with our RAZR M phones and the negative impact this problem is causing for our business and personal lives, Verizon agreed to send us new/replacement RAZR M phones with the previous OS software. We will NOT UPGRADE the replacement phones. Wish us luck in getting our Bluetooth ear pieces connected to our phone – we’re on the phone hours and hours ever day and not having the Bluetooth functionality is UNACCEPTABLE..

KC…you way of deleting multiple text messages only works if you are deleting the complete text conversations from multiple contacts but if I want to delete several texts within 1 conversation you cannot select multiple texts and delete you have to delete each one individually..

          • tracy

            06/11/2014 at 2:06 pm

You can keep individual messages from being deleted by protecting them first. That has not changed. Then delete the conversation making sure not to delete protected message.

          06/16/2014 at 8:27 pm

KC, you are wrong. Your method deletes entire CONVERSATIONS not individual text messages.

            06/17/2014 at 5:55 pm

If you protect or lock individual text messages before you delete the conversation, you can keep individual text messages.

Worst update ever! Turned the phone I loved into the phone I hate! Android needs to create a patch or something to correct all the issues. Why did they “fix” it when it wasn’t broken?????

Why did they have to mess with it !!! It was fine, was not GREAT but it was fine. Now I have a ton of issues, I sure wish that I had kept ignoring the updates. Major issues is that in TXT Messaging, why are all txt boxes white !! This kind of makes it confusing to know who said what. I know its all about battery life but, going from color to white ?? does it make a huge difference in battery. Also, for me, it screwed up my playlist music and your not able to make multiple selections for deletions, it has to be done one by one now. I called Verizon and they said that they are getting a HUGE amount of calls regarding the updates. I also called Motorola and they said the same thing but, they are working on a new update to be launched in a few weeks to fix the major complaints. I sure wish there was a way for me to go back to what I had before the update… I HATE IT !!! if there is anyone who knows how to put my cell back to what it was previous to the update… I would be grateful.

I contacted verizon many times. My solution- I downloaded Go SMS Pro. I have tested it out and I think it’s fixed. It took me two days of resetting everything. Almost did a factory restart, which I didn’t want to do. But please give this ago. If you all ready have it trash it and re-download that app. Good luck

My. Pictures are acting Up now.I have thousands of pictures. Just vanish. There are now just black squares . reboot did nothing. Waiting. Did nothing. Lost calander the new text message app sucks biggest hairy rookie dick! It changed all my keys . I didn’t use swipe but it’s gone now too. My color indicator now is just white I used them to determine importance of messages. It changed all my ringers and vibration warning settings. And many more issues. This new update blows monkey butt.

You mean to tell me that you have huge companies like Verizon and Motorola and this is the best they can come up with. In just a couple of days of the update being released everyone is complaining about the same things. I would love to know who it is at these companies that decided these changes were better and why would they release an update that I’m sure they knew had issues. BTW, just found another issue. If you call a number and you want to save that as a new contacs you click on “add contact” now at bottom right corner (which is a good thing as before it was in top right corner) but when you hit add contact it takes you to another screen and then you have to hit “add contact” again. Why make you do it 2 times? Also before if you hit the “search contact” button it would take you to your contact list. From there you could add a new contact by hitting the “add to contact” icon. Now if you hit the “search contact” icon there is no option to add a new contact. Before I could add a contact, enter the new name and add numbers, email, etc. I haven’t found it yet but I don’t think you can just simply add a new contact like that anymore? Way to go Verizon and Motorola!! Like everyone is saying…you took our very good functioning phones and made them shitty..thx!! Last time I EVER update my phone without researching what the update does first. Shame on me for thinking an update was supposed to make things better..not worse

      05/25/2014 at 1:05 pm

Update is horrible! Can’t get rid of text notifications even though I’ve read them, pictures that are sent to me won’t come through. Anyway to UNDO this???? Why do they always have to screw with things? If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!!

    05/23/2014 at 8:57 pm

I absolutely hate this update. First…getting rid of Swype? Huge mistake. Yes I can download an app but it tells me it can have access to my credit card and other personal information. If I want Swype, I guess I will have to try it and hopefully not get hacked. Next, I too had to hard reset my phone and lost ring tones, notifications. It was like I had to reconfigure my phone all from the very beginning. My pics were saved but I still had to import them and go through all contacts and reassign. I get that we all have to adjust to the “new message + thing” at the bottom of the screen but what was wrong with it where it was? Like a lot of other screwed over things in this update. I have told everyone I know not to update to this version whatsoever!!! No way to go back to JellyBean version is totally stupid and have I said I hate this update??? If so many of us are complaining about the same things…FIX IT!!!

Total crap software upgrade. After 3 days of installing the “forced software update” My battery life went to half of its capacity, I lost the customization of my phone and on the 4 the day, my keyboard locked up and I had to get a new phone. A friends phone did the same thing. I bought an iphone 5S. Trying to get use to it. The screen is smaller. You almost need glasses to use this phone. I WANT MY OLD DROID BACK!!! who thought this was a good idea? I am having all of the same issues that everyone else is having. My phone does not connect to my home wifi unless I force it, I had to repair my bluetooth to my phone and it wasn’t recognized, I miss having the ringer volume on the lock screen and I do not like the fact that text messages for incoming and outgoing are the exact same color. It amazes me that people spend hours creating this and can’t see what the obvious flaws are everybody on this site has found them almost immediately from the update and yet the geniuses that created this couldn’t see it during the the test phase that’s ridiculous.

I have the droid razor M and have a few of the problems mentioned, along with one more. In contacts, I lost the alphabet letters to choose from. I worked in the software business all my life and we tested and re-tested new software before we installed it, why wasn’t this tested. And if it didn’t work don’t release it. What was the hurry to release KitKat????

    • kc

      05/26/2014 at 9:48 pm

The alphabet/letters in the Contact app are there — just in a different form. If you look on the right side of the screen there is a scroll bar that when pressed, will display the letters.

This upgrade has caused a major crisis for our family; not being able to our Bluetooth earpieces is UNACCEPTABLE. I don’t have time to wait for a new phone; don’t want to spend the time setting up a new phone; I want my phone to work as it did before this ridiculous upgrade. Even simple functions like answering the phone have changed. Most families have too many other major things in our lives to deal with — we certainly didn’t need to have our major communication tool go bonkers on us. I, too, have worked for large software companies (IBM, Lotus, Digital, Kronos) – all of which tested, re-tested and tested the application upgrade before releasing it. When we bought our phones a year ago, we were debating whether or not to get an iPhone — we should have purchased the iPhone.

        05/27/2014 at 5:56 am

kc – THANK YOU! The missing alphabet/letters in the Contact app was one of my complaints also. But I saw your comment and found the scroll bar, and I actually like it a lot better than the tiny little letters that used to be on the right-hand side. That said, it’s about the ONLY thing I like better, and I agree with the rest of your comments about the upgrade.

Looks like I am not alone in my suffering with this alleged grand update. It’s garbage and it’s made my phone garbage. Now not only am I dealing with most of the same problems the other posters are having(in addition to disliking the new features) but my battery gets extremely hot with any phone usage including calls and simple text messages. The most irritating issue is not being able to retain a 4g signal for more than a couple minutes at a time. Cory’s advices makes him sound like he works for VZW, “factory reset” as the ultimate solution. Well, that only made things worse so he may want to rethink telling people that it will solve their problems because it rarely does. I worked for big red for 5 years so I know that these long awaited updates are never a good thing for customers. They sure do increase store traffic though…:O…do you suppose? Nah, big red wouldn’t do that. Would they? LOL

    • kc

      05/26/2014 at 9:54 pm

I had the same thought…Verizon and Motorola working together break our major communication tool which most of us can’t live without – so we all run to replace the phone and/or Bluetooth. IMO — they broke it – so they should pay for a new phone; or just let us revert back to the previous OS version. From now on — I’m NOT upgrading!!

    05/25/2014 at 5:12 pm

I’m confused with everyone stating that selecting/deleting of SMS messages has been removed, it works fine for me. Press and hold til the message highlights, and the top bar says “Choose conversations”. Then you just click on each message you want, and it highlights…trash can is on the bottom of the screen. If you press the check mark, it deselects all the messages.

My battery life on my Verizon RAZR MAXX HD has been suspect since the update. I have done a cache wipe, and I’ll see how that pans out (really don’t want to do a factory restore). I’m hoping this is just temporary while the phone adjusts itself, and I’m playing with it excessively learning the new settings.

I do not like the new white SMS screen, however. In addition to making it too bright to read in a dark environment, it’s an unnecessary draw on the battery. Google keyboard sucks compared to the old stock Swype, and I hate the lack of arrow keys on the top bar. Word selection is difficult at best. Maybe this is just a situation of getting used to the new function. Where is my comma? Do we seriously have to pause and hold period to insert a comma in a sentence?

I’ve been having a huge issue with my lock screen, and it not responding. Pressing the unlock button on the side often does nothing, or has huge lag. I’m hoping my aforementioned cache wipe fixes that issue as well. Getting tired of having to do a phone reboot from a blank screen over and over (also a drain on my battery).

The update patch notes stated the “OK Google” voice activation (a la Galaxy S5) would now be operational on the RAZR MAXX home screen, without having to swipe upward anymore. This does not appear to work, unless there is a menu setting that needs to be selected. That would have been cool to have.

I have not experienced he issues with Wifi that many have described. I do not like the new white-only notification bar. It used to show white if there was a connection issue, or change, and blue when it was good. Also, the BT icon would show blue with green logo when full connectivity with my ear piece.

Big pro to the update is the activation of Bluetooth BLE. I can now use my MIO Link and download the MIO Go app. This is a huge plus for me. Plus his should open up a new host of future Bluetooth devices. I’ve had no issues re-synching my BT devices.

Not sure how luck you are to find “Choose Conversations,” because when I click and hold a text message here is what comes up in a box: Message Options: Copy text, Forward, Lock, View details, View Report, Delete. Nowhere to I see “Choose Conversations.” Help.

      07/06/2014 at 1:36 pm

I think you misunderstand what everyone is complaining about. Its an issue within the text message and not about whole threads. Your method works for WHOLE threads and not inside one.

Two years ago, a VZW/Samsung Android update basically “bricked” my perfectly functioning Samsung Galaxy Stratosphere. After six frustrating months, I upgraded to the Motorola Razr HD, and have been extremely pleased with its features and performance.

The notice of an Android KitKat upgrade rattled me. History repeating itself? The OTA download was automatic, hence unavoidable. Therefore, I immediately began watching the internet for signs of trouble. There are many, and they are unsurprisingly consistent. Eliminating the Razr HD’s Google calendar app, which came with a live icon, is madness: Next to the basic telephone function, the calendar is the most important smartphone function contributing to my daily productivity. White text screens and all the rest of the issues, who needs the aggravation?

The only saving grace: The phone keeps asking if I wish to install the KitKat download now or wait 12 hours, at which time I will be asked the same question again. Rest assured that I will continue to defer installing the KitKat download unless, of course, Motorola fixes the flaws which have been discovered. Better yet, let those who wish to revert to JellyBean have an option to do so.

“Fooled me once, shame on you. Fooled me twice, shame on me.”

My old calendar was still on my Razr HD. I had to delete the icon to whatever not-installed calendar came with the update and put the original back on the home screen from the apps page.

I’m concerned that my update did not download properly. My Razr HD has almost none of the many problems shown in these many, many comments. I DID lose one app that I had paid for. My Bluetooth works fine, and did not lose any of the stored devices. Wifi is OK. My upper task bar is now white only, but so what? Adapt. It does take longer to recharge now, but battery life seems about the same. I still connect to Google, and my Google calendar is unchanged. Did I get lucky?

    • kc

      05/27/2014 at 9:22 pm

The upgrade to your phone most like downloaded properly; you just happen to be one of the few people that (for some reason) didn’t get slammed with phone problems after the upgrade. You must lead a charmed life. It could be the type of phone that you have, the version of software that you had on the phone, the type of Bluetooth device you’re using and other applications that you had (or didn’t have) on your phone. Thank your lucky stars and knock on wood because the techno-demons are still out there – lurking for the next unsuspecting victim.

SO I updaterd my Razr Maxx HD this morning. I started getting authentication errors on all of my apps. I realized, the date was Jan 5, 1970. The date is not automatically updating from the network nor can I manually set it. It stays stuck at 1/5/1970. I factory reset the phone and the same problem exists. The date will not change to current date.

    Any ideas?

How is the new messaging screen setup supposed to save battery? Its White with black text. White is the most battery intense colors to use. Combined with texting being one of the main uses for a mobile device = dead battery. Not to mention the loss in functionality that the old, easier on the eyes, multi colored version had. I would rather it be functional than have some dumb smiley faces.

Another thing I notice, I’ve had to reboot my phone more often now with KitKat than I did before the update. Not all apps run as smooth add they should.

My NFC is spotty as well. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t do anything other than make that connection noise. No issues before the update.

My Bluetooth is also acting up. I called Verizon and they told me that my car stereo firmware needs updating because it might not be compatible with KitKat. Again, no issues before the update on my 2013 car!

I also don’t like the all white messaging look

I have never commented on these boards, but I REALLY HOPE Verizon/Motorola have an intern or someone reading through these complaints..this is a HORRIBLE upgrade. I understand that change is ‘different’ but this has diminished the quality of service on a device that was just fine. If I had to narrow it down to one complaint, I only receive notification of a new text about 1/3 of the time…otherwise, until I randomly look at my phone, I have no idea that I received a message. This is VERY frustrating and an amateur bug..I agree with the person above, these two companies are TOO big to not have figured these issues out and they are very close to losing many customers..PLEASE GET IT TOGETHER.

I have the droid razr m the main problem I am having with the kit kat 4.4.2 update is the connectivity to wireless networks. So I called Motorola today and the person I talked to in technical support seemed to be very aware of all the problems everyone is having from this upgrade. He told me that they are working on fixes for these issues and that we should have a new update next week. Hope he wasn’t lying just to get me off the phone…guess we’ll see

    • Wally Mayo

      06/11/2014 at 5:23 am

Apparently he was lying. It’s now June 11, and everyone is still screaming about the problems. It also seems that they have stopped pushing the upgrade … until some kind of fix is done. My wife & I both have RAZR MAXX HDs, and I unfortunately did the upgrade. Her phone never asked to upgrade. Having to choose between wifi and bluetooth is horrible. Some situations call for both. Battery life, camera problems, etc. etc.

Since this new update my Droid Razr M is not picking up wifi signals. If I restart my phone I am able to pick up a signal at work and home for about 10 minutes and then it loses signal and goes to 3G or 4G. I am NOT tech savy but my frustration comes from when I look at my wifi address on my Droid M and it says it is “connected” or “saved” but it still shows no signal on the top corner of my screen.

If anyone has some advice for a non tech person I would appreciate it.

Same problem here. So I turned off my bluetooth and my wifi stays connected. When I want to sync something with bluetooth, I’ll just have to turn it back on. I’m hoping JL is right and we’ll have a fix in the next week.

This phone has always been a bit sketchy in syncing to my Outlook. After this update, it is a lost cause. My PC doesn’t even know it is there. Aha has always been a bit unstable but usually I could listen to it while I had Google Maps up to monitor traffic during my commute. That is is completely gone. Google Play is taking up 25% of my power, doing I have no idea what, so battery power is something I have to worry about, now. Because it won’t sync, I’m afraid to reset it because I can’t re-enter anything. I also have pics I want to get out (aside from emailing them all and music I want to put it, but right now it is an isolated device.

I’m seriously thinking of going to an iPhone when my two years are up. I figure if they have trouble syncing I would have heard about it.

I forgot to mention one upside. It has finally stopped giving me that infuriating “SD card has been removed” I used to get daily, followed by a reboot where it would reload my music for the next 30 minutes. So there’s that.

If you are looking elsewhere and you want to hang up a connected call simply drag down the notification bar and click the option to “hang up” right below where you will see ongoing call and the phone number/name of the caller. There is no need to go through multiple screens. you can do this from any location while the call is connected.

SOOOO unhappy with Kitkat! When my Razr Maxx HD came up with the update I joyously excepted. Some things are minor, like having to swipe to unlike instead of double touch, “,” being moved on the keyboard ect. The biggest issues are Batt life that was a good 2 days before is now WAY down and the music media bounces to my bluetooth randomly when i have the headphone jack hooked up. I play my songs in my car via a cassette headphone adapter and it really sucks. My 18 year old son’s is even worse than mine and he literally asked if we could look at getting him a different phone, and He LOVED his Maxx HD until the update. My Wife has the regular Razr HD and is very frustrated as well. Not sure who to blame, Verizon, Motorola, Google, or who, but this update is a MASSIVE and MAJOR FAIL!!!! I hope they patch it SOON!

Immediately after the update finished, j got an “device mismatch” error of some kind. I was concerned, but hit ignore, and moved on.
Calendar app was missing; downloaded the replacement from the play store, thenihad two versions of the same app in the app drawer, one that did nothing. I had already backed up all my important stuff, planning to start fresh with the SD card blank due to the new way that KitKat restricts access to external storage,so I decided to do a factory reset. This did seem to fix all the quirky behaviors.

That said, I am not a fan of the UI ‘enhancements’ it seems to have taken a step backwards in design and style. The white on white in messaging is horrible. Also, long messages used to expand while typing, so you see the whole message, now the space is static and you have to scroll. The option to use ‘Hangouts’ is nice, but I just want my oid texting experience back. Itwasnt broke, why did they have to screw with it?

The new lock screen is dumb, even with the new locksceen ability. It just looks unpolished. I miss the ringer on-off that was there before.
    Notifications are still screwey.
Keyboard changes are stupid and unnecessary.
    Exchange server setup is flaky.
New clock app adds a bunch of new features, but the desk clock function looks amateurish.

    Hate this update to no end! My apps crash, constantly restarting my phone and now my phone is creating “home pages” were you apps are on its own. Apps that i don’t even have installed on this phone. The battery life is terrible and the worst part is the service signal. I always had full 4G lte service at home and work and now I’m lucky to get out of 3G. The droid razr maxx hd worked just fine prior to this update and now it sucks bad. I hope something is done for another update soon for all these issues!!!!!!!!;

My phone keeps failing at the update. Downloads it fine the starts update gets about a third of the way through and the android dies. After reading everything here these I am glad it has failed for over two weeks. Phone is not rooted so not sure why it won’t update. Verizon couldn’t help and I refused to reset my phone and lose everything.

My Razr HD now announces “Verizon Wireless” with every incoming call, which is very annoying. I Checked Caller ID Readout setting and it’s set for ring only. Even toggled it back and forth. It even announces “Verizon Wireless with callers in my contact list, so I don’t know what’s going on.

Anyone else having issues with the speaker phone??!? Each time I am on a call the speaker phone randomly turns on. I have to push the button to turn on speaker then again to turn off speaker so it goes back to handset. This happens multiple times on each call. It does the same thing while I am on bluetooth. The speaker will just randomly turn on. Very frustrating!!!!

    • MJ

      06/20/2014 at 9:43 am

I actually had the speakerphone issue before the KitKat update, but haven’t had it since. I’ve had all sorts of other issues though – like I absolutely CANNOT connect to WiFi at work in most places, and the building blocks good data signal if you’re more than 3 feet away from a window. So I basically get no data at all, and it turns out that smartphones are not very useful without being connected to the internet :-/

I find it extremely bizarre that there is such a diversity of issues seen with this update. Usually software bugs have some consistency when the same software is installed on the same hardware…

Hate hate hate this upgrade! I have a RAZR m which worked great before the update. After- cannot get pic or group messages until days or hours later. Doesn’t matter if I send in WiFi or not-or receive inwifi or not. They show up whenever they want. And my email doesn’t update unless I’m in WiFi. I have rebooted and cleared my caches and a ton of other suggestions I have found but none work orhelp. My husband has same phone and he has no issues whatsoever. Thanks vzw. Thanks Google. You suck.

If one wanted to initiate a class action suit on this matter, who would be the primary target? Carriers or device manufacturers? Verizon, Motorola, Google? Paying over $700 for a phone just to have it become a brick so these companies can get more money isn’t just frowned upon by consumers … I’m sure there is someone in the legal system that will get pretty fired up on this matter since consumers can’t just reflash a working JB.

My Droid update seems to be ok. I agree with the NEW UNBROKEN FEATURES not being needed though. My wife’s RAZR M, not so good. Picture Gallery is all messed up, among other things. The Gallery folder images are simply random pics from her photos. So she does not have the categories of original pics in folders. Along with that, when trying to click on a pic for viewing, a completely different pic appears. Anyone seeing this problem? It has not been mentioned, So Far. Thanks.

    • Gina

      06/08/2014 at 1:08 pm

I’m having this issue too. My pictures are in random order and I can get them to sort so the most recent pictures appear first. I click on one picture and a different one appears. The pictures I’ve taken since the update are not even appearing in the gallery. I’m worried I’ll lose all of my photos so I tried to transfer them to my laptop. I’ve done this many times before but this time when I plugged in my usb and tried to find the folder with all my images it’s not even listed. Having all of the other issues everyone has posted too. This update is awful!

Prior to this update, I loved my Droid Razr M…now, I can’t stand it. I lovded the thread for texting….it differentiated beautifully and it was clearly defined making it easy to see. Now it’s white…all the same. I feel like I moved back to 1999 with this style of texting. I hate it. I also cannot stand the new keyboard…or the text keyboard. I lost the tiny microphone that was on the keyboard..(all gone!) Can someone please help me to wrap my mind around this update. It is to my understanding that updates suggests ( to me at least) an overall improvement…correct? So, why then has this been a disaster.

For those of you who haven’t updated…DON’T! In a perfect world there would have been a way to disable and revert back to previous versions. Whomever created this software…if I were their boss, I’d be very unhappy with them!

Is there anyway to CHANGE the texting color?

    06/07/2014 at 9:06 am

There is some confusion about deleting multiple texts. You can *select* and delete entire conversations but not the individual text. Most of us like to keep certain texts with important info such as addresses, event info etc. So deleting the entire conversation isn’t an option. This update comes with new and useless bloatware. For the love of all that is holy, STOP FORCING APPS ON US!! My measely 8g of memory is almost used up by this abomination, so I have to delete texts to have room. And why so incompetent? I understand bugs happen, but why did the developers think it would be okay to leave out key features? This is a sloppy, expensive way to run a business.

Having the Razr HD was nice. Phone worked great and apps worked the way they should. Since the update, apps no longer work. I do not what to downland an app for swype that allows them my contacts and send information back to the company on how I use swype. Messages or texts from other carriers, i.e IPhone, I never or rarely receive now. In addition, I can no longer see names of my contacts as a person calls me from my saved contact list or in my texts. After, finding all these issues, I have made it a point to let my friends and family, even perfect strangers, know not to update to KitKat if they like their phone. I will be getting rid of Motorola completely based off this update. Great Job Motorola, Apple now thanks you for my new business with them.

I have the Motorola Droid Razr M, which was awesome until this update. Now i have everyone issue, PLUS my ringer keeps getting turned off, so do my notifications, my alarm clock app doesn’t work and NEITHER does the one installed on the phone. My connections sucks, went from 3-4 bars to 1-2 bars at home. Have talked to Verizon on the phone, in person at the stores and on their chat web sight. NO ONE has any idea when a patch is coming out. I was informed to either use an older phone, pay for a new phone, or pay to have someone check it and maybe fix it somewhere else. THIS IS SERIOUSLY NOT WHAT I SIGNED ON MY CONTRACT@! Why do I have to pay to fix their problem when my phone was working just fine before this update! I hate it! I think we all are getting the raw end of the stick here! Its been over two weeks and no update or patch. Either give me an upgrade to another type of phone or fix this one!

    Frustrated to extremes!!!

I, also, do not have this option within a message thread to select multiple messages for action. I do, however, get the “Choose Converstaions” when selecting complete threads. For example, I cannot select multiple messasges within my back and forth with my wife. I can however select the full converstation with my wife & a friend and then delete each of the total threads. So it looks like we can either delete the whole set of messages or you have to delete each message one at a time.. ugh

Since the update last week, which I hated, my phone was acting okay… until today. It factory reset by itself. I mean no one was around my phone for the entire day and wham… factory reset. I have a Droid RAZR MAXX HD. Slowly but surely my WiFi connection gets worse and worse. I’ve found I can connect to certain places but now I can’t even connect in my own home. After the update I noticed a drop in the connectivity but now it’s completely gone and has me on 4G. When I look at the status of my connection it just keeps saying that it’s obtaining the IP address. I’ve reset my router, turned my phone on and off and nothing has helped. Anyone have any fixes?? I feel like Verizon is trying to get me to use my Data. Ugh.

The one thing that seems to me to be a huge issue regarding all of us with RAZR phones is, you would think someone form Motorola would address these issues based on the terrible update problems on this site. But nope. Guess they just do not care. I agree with the users who say there will not be another Motorola in their future. There won’t be one in mine!

My samsung tablet will not let me change my notification sound since the update. It is stuck on an annoying alarm clock chime that does not stop until I check the notification. I tried using sounds from my pc with no avail. Is this common and is there a solution?

I have the Razr Maxx HD and didn’t have any problems until the last update. Aside from no longer having the ringer on the initial screen, having the problems with losing my wi-fi connections & my battery life becoming AWFUL (with no new apps added), I’ve learned to adapt with the changes. However, my phone now reboots by itself randomly, other times it will freeze & I have to reboot it, and what’s been happening the past three weeks is while I’m using it, the entire screen turns into some syfy looking thing with colored rows that flash before changing to an all-black screen. Sometimes it will reboot, other times it will come right back on, & twice I’ve had to leave it sitting around for a few hours before it finally decided to come back on. I’m a “basic user” where all I do are make calls, text, go on facebook and sometimes use Navigator. I had the Bionic previously and never had problems with it.

I have a RAZR M and I since I upgraded to KitKat my phone hasn’t had the reception like it use to. I’ve been getting a lot of 1x instead of 3G and 4G. The phone also restarts automatically whenever I try using an app. My biggest complaint is that my phone is SO SLOW now!!

Razr HD here, and kitkat is what will make me accept Satan’s handshake and get an iphone if I can’t roll it back to the previous OS. Hate the whiteness, be it the texting background, the text in the notification bar, or the notification light. Maps keeps exiting on it’s own, and REFUSES to allow me to select the same route home that I used to get to a place. I now have to unlock my phone to set ringer to vibrate, instead of just hitting the power button and swiping the little speaker icon that is gone in 4.4.2. Enabling lockscreen widgets does NOTHING. Using voice recognition to text was iffy before, but downright unusable now. Shutting off autocorrect does nothing, as words I clearly annunciate still change to ones I DID NOT SAY. dropping text messages and phonecalls. 9 times out of ten, when I hit the home button to go to the home screen, google search comes up instead, because some genius decided to add a hotspot right below the home button that brings up Google, EVEN THOUGH GOOGLE IS AT THE TOP OF THE SCREEN!!! Apps close or lock for no reason. Battery life sucks, and charging takes longer,as well as heating my phone up like crazy. And email notifications make no noise, when they did before. Also, it is not the phone itself, as my Wife has the same phone, and hers does the same thing, except hers drops damn near every call, whereas mine drops 3 out of 5. Speaker volume on calls sucks, is too loud on notifications.

I am THIS close to going apple.

      06/30/2014 at 9:16 am

I have a couple of points/workarounds for you:

      – For the lock-screen ringer change, instead of unlocking just hold the power button down for a second or two until the “Power Off” menu comes up. From there you can switch to silent, vibrate, or ringer on.

      – Enabling lock-screen widgets allows you to add widgets to the lock-screen, but it doesn’t initially change anything on your lock screen. To add widgets, swipe to the left on your lock screen and you’ll see a big “+” symbol. Tap that and select from the available widgets (you have to enter you unlock code at some point in there). You can add several widgets. To rearrange or delete them, long-press on one and you can move or delete them from there. Also, swiping to the right from the lock screen brings you to the camera since the kitkat upgrade.

      – For some of your other issues, I’d recommend clearing your cache partition (or trying a factory reset, but that’s always a pain). Clearing the cache partition is not the same as clearing the cache for an app, and it doesn’t delete any user data/contacts/etc. For instructions, see Motorola Help: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/prod_answer_detail/a_id/100222/p/30%2C6720%2C8448/kw/clear%20cache

In my opinion, switching to Apple is a ridiculous move. Motorola released a single bad (okay, terrible) software update. Granted, this shouldn’t happen, but for the last ~2 years I’ve been so happy with my RAZR M, and I’ve been very happy with other Mot phones I’ve had over the last 10 years. Also I expect they will be far more careful with software updates in the future. But in any case, if you’re unhappy with Motorola wouldn’t switching to Samsung, HTC, LG, etc. be a more logical move than jumping completely over to the other side of the fence? Personally I cannot stand the user interface of IOS, and I plan to stick with Android and whichever phone manufacturer that can offer me the best value and experience.

Final thought: Keep in mind that Motorola has been moving toward far more stock Android ROMs in their newer phones (Moto X, G, and E), which means there’s less room for them to introduce bugs. Hopefully this will mean they focus even more on the hardware….

I have the RAZR maxx HD and I have all the same problems. The GPS is now terrible it tells me I’m on different roads than I am and tells me to turn at places I shouldn’t… It got me lost on the freeway by having me take an exit to the wrong direction.

However my biggest problem is in my email. I can’t open attachments. I NEED this for work. If I tried to reply to emails that have attachments they are forever stuck in my outbox trying to first download the attachments before sending and I can’t send attachments. I can’t find any info on fixing the email problem other than others have complained about the same problem. Someone suggested using a different program to open the attachments but I can’t figure out how to select such an option. I’ve looked through my settings.

I can now delete one text at a time inside a conversation. But my battery gets super hot -128°- and runs down super fast. I used to get 24 hours. Now I get less than 12. And that happened overnight with the upgrade. Response time to a button push is a good 5 seconds or more like 10. Not loving my phone so much now.

I have a Droid RAZR HD, but in addition to so many of the problems stated, the most frustrating to me is that my GPS keeps losing the signal. I have for years found the GPS on my phone to be more accurate than my Garmin, but since I installed the update I get the message, “GPS signal lost” constantly. I never had this problem in any of the vehicles I drive until I installed the update.
