iPhone 6 Rumors Mount as Release Inches Closer

New iPhone 6 rumors continue to emerge at a breakneck pace as we inch closer to WWDC 2014 and Apple’s rumored iPhone 6 release date this fall.

As we march deeper into 2014, we’re starting to get a very good read on Apple’s plans for consumers. At WWDC 2014 in June, Apple is expected to showcase its new OS X 10.10 update, iOS 8 for iPhone and iPad and perhaps new hardware. Rumors suggest that we could finally see the New MacBook Air with Retina arrive but rumors have yet to firm up.

Later in the year, Apple is expected to released new iPads to replace the iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina Display in addition to a brand new iPhone 6. And it’s the iPhone 6 that has consumers buzzing thanks to a series of leaks that point to its release date, screen size, processor, camera and more.

Apple iPhone 6 rumors have been intensely focused on the device’s screen size and rumors currently are hovering around two iPhone 6 models, one that is 4.7-inches and one that is 5.5-inches. 4.7-inch iPhone 6 have been rampant in recent days and today, new leaks out of Chinese microblogging site Weibo, courtesy of Nowherelse, appear to show a part from a 4.7-inch iPhone 6.

The unverified leak comes from a user called “顾Gooey” and the photos offer a glimpse at what could be components for the iPhone 6’s display back light. The part looks eerily similar to the component used with the iPhone 5s. There are some differences though most notably the relocated connector and the change in the pin design.

iPhone 6 rumors have pointed to a thinner design and a change in LED backlighting technology could help Apple produce a thinner iPhone 6. The smaller size could come in part from new display technology that reduces the thickness needed for display backlighting, as shared in a report on LEDInside of TrendForce.

Rumors suggest that Apple could deliver an iPhone 6 that is up to 26% thinner than the iPhone 5s. Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, the man who accurately predicted many of the iPhone 5s’ features ahead of launch, believes a 6.5 – 7mm thickness is easier for the company to achieve.

In a note shared by MacRumors, Kuo also says that he believes that the iPhone 6 will come with a power button on the right and bezels that are narrower than those found on the iPhone 5s. These changes could help the company attach a larger display without a massive change to the size of the smartphone.

Reports point to the arrival of two new iPhone models, both with larger displays. A 9to5Mac report suggests that the iPhone 6 could come with a 1794 x 960 Retina Display and the same 16:9 aspect ratio that it has applied to its iPhones since the iPhone 5′s release back in 2012. This jump in resolution would lead to better, crisper looking on-screen content.

Release date rumors have been unable to pinpoint an exact date though they almost universally point to a release this fall. While rumors point to a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 this fall, rumors surrounding the 5.5-inch iPhone have yet to firm up. Recent leaks suggest that we could see the 5.5-inch model debut in 2014 though some have cautioned that it may not arrive in 2014 at all and could instead arrive in 2015.
