Samsung Galaxy S5 S View Flip Cover Review (Video)
The Samsung Galaxy S5 S View Flip Cover is a $50 Galaxy S5 case that adds a front cover with a window, full protection for the back of the device and keeps the water-resistant feature that will help your phone survive a drop into the sink. Unlike a traditional folio case that blocks the screen, the S View Flip Cover includes a small window that shows information, notifications and offers fast access to the camera.
Even if you don’t like a traditional folio style smartphone case, the Samsung Galaxy S5 S View Flip Cover is one worth checking out. I don’t like folio cases for the iPhone 5s and I couldn’t get used to the HTC One M8 Dot View case, but the Galaxy S5 S View case is one of my favorites. There are many reasons, but one of the biggest is that it replaces the off white dimpled back with a more pleasing white that also feels quite nice, with leather-like finish.
The three-inch window on the front of the Galaxy S5 S View Flip Cover is what helps this case stand out from other folio cases. It is not the first time Samsung offered this case style, and like previous versions it is more expensive than the average Galaxy S5 case — but it is worth it if you want a folio case that doesn’t suck.
To install the Galaxy S5 S View Flip Cover you pull the dimpled back off the phone and place this case right over the bare back of the device. This helps keep the Galaxy S5 relatively thin and you get fit and finish in line with the original phone. There is a small rubber seal on the inside that keeps the phone water-resistant. And this case still offers access to the battery and Micro SD card if you find yourself changing them often.
Amazon sells the Galaxy S5 S View Flip Cover for $33 to $37 depending on the color while most stores like Best Buy charge around $50.

This short Galaxy S5 S View Flip Cover video shows some of the features and explains why it is a better folio case than most in this style.
The Galaxy S5 S View Flip Cover comes in five colors that help spice up the black and white models found on most U.S. carriers. Samsung offers pink, white, black, electric blue and a gold S View Flip Cover. This is the white S View Flip Cover, which looks nicer than the dimpled white back of the Galaxy S5 and is softer than the white Galaxy Note 3. If you want a more premium feel for the Galaxy S5, this is an accessory you need to invest in.
The soft back can show dirt somewhat easily, especially on the white S View Flip Cover, but most of it comes off with a little soap and water. Be careful with this case around sharp objects as the soft finish feels easy to scratch up and our case comes with a few dings after weeks of use. Thankfully most are small enough that you need to look close to see them.
Soft leather-like material lines the front and back and a pliable hinge allows users to fold the cover back during use and even set it down flat on a table while using it. There is still enough pressure that it may not stay in place ion a small ledge like that on an exercise machine without finding just the right angle.
The three-inch window on the Galaxy S5 S View Flip Cover shows an incoming calls, the time, weather and pedometer steps. It also shows the notification bar from Android, but you cannot swipe down to see the rest of your notifications without opening the case. When a call comes in you can answer it without opening the case and talk with the case closed to keep your screen clean. One challenge is keeping the small window clean on both sides since it will pick up dirt on the outside and smudges when holding it open.
I don’t use the camera shortcut very often because it only takes a square photo. This is fine for Instagram, but for most photos I want a regular format that I can crop later. When I want to use the camera in regular mode, the cover hangs down below the phone out of the way.
Overall the Samsung Galaxy S5 S View Flip Cover is a very nice case for the Galaxy S5 and worth the $50 price for most shoppers. Samsung will soon offer one with built-in wireless charging that will retail for $20 more. If you hate opening and closing the USB port cover on the Galaxy S5 you may want to wait for this one so you can charge without wires.
