Android 4.4.3 KitKat Release Pegged for Today

The start of the Android 4.4.3 KitKat release could begin today as a U.S. carrier announced the start of its Nexus 7 and Nexus 5 Android 4.4.3 KitKat roll outs.

For months, Android 4.4.3 KitKat rumors have been swirling around, teasing owners of Google’s Nexus 5, Nexus 7, Nexus 10, Nexus 4 and owners of other Android smartphones including the HTC One M8, HTC One M7 and the Samsung Galaxy S5. And while we’ve seen the Android 4.4.3 KitKat update leak numerous times over, it remains unreleased.

Today though could be Nexus owners lucky day as T-Mobile announced plans to roll out its Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 Android 4.4.3 KitKat updates starting today.

The carrier made the announcements on its software support pages for the two Nexus devices. The carrier is very adamant that both updates will be starting today. It says that starting today, the Nexus 5 will receive Android 4.4.3 KitKat build KTU84M while the Nexus 7 will receive Android 4.4.3 KitKat update build KTU84L.

T-Mobile states that both updates will bring security enhancements and bug fixes, two features that have been long rumored to be aboard the Android 4.4.3 KitKat update for Nexus devices.

While this is certainly a great sign, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Google will roll the update out today. In mid-April, we saw Sprint announce the Android 4.4.3 KitKat update for the Nexus 5 only to temporarily cancel it a few days later. Sprint’s software support page doesn’t appear to have been updated yet, adding more mystery to a situation that has thrived on it.

Today’s announcement comes after Motorola, Samsung, and Google all confirmed the Android 4.4.3 KitKat update for arrival. Google, in fact, has confirmed the Android 4.4.3 KitKat update twice. So while T-Mobile’s confirmation appears legitimate, the update’s roll out won’t be confirmed until Google itself pushes the update out.

When the update does roll out, it will likely emerge in stages. Google is well known for pushing out its Android updates over the course of a week or so and not over the course of a day. Updates typically roll out in stages though Nexus users usually do have the option of installing the update manually ahead of the OTA.

Google usually pushes out its Nexus updates to all of its compatible devices in and around the first release. We still haven’t seen the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 Android 4.4.3 KitKat releases surface but rumors have pointed to an upcoming Android 4.4.3 KitKat release for both of these Nexus-branded devices.

Rumors have also pointed to an Android 4.4.3 KitKat release for a number of non-Nexus smartphones. It appears that the update will land for Google’s stable of Play Edition devices including the HTC One M8 and HTC One M7. Rumors also point to a release for the Moto X, regular versions of the HTC One M8 and HTC One M7, Samsung Galaxy S5, and the Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE-A model.

HTC is rumored to be targeting a June roll out for both the HTC One M8 and HTC One M7 though it’s still not clear when Samsung plans to push out the updates for the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy S4. We also haven’t seen any change logs leak which means that the contents of these updates remains unknown.

T-Mobile is suggesting that Android 4.4.3 KitKat is a bug fix update though manufacturers are known for putting their own spin on Android updates.

IOS 8 Feature Wishlist

If Android 4.4.3 KitKat does roll out today, it will coincide with Apple’s iOS 8 announcement. Apple is expected to take the stage at WWDC 2014 this morning and show off its brand new update for iPhone and iPad. While nothing is confirmed, it looks like Google might be trying to steal a bit of its thunder with an Android 4.4.3 KitKat roll out.
