If you are looking for a cheap smartphone you either want one that is as close to free on contract as you can get, or one that is affordably priced off contract. Depending which route you plan to go you’ll pay a few dollars on a contract or at least $70 off contract.

Some people don’t want to buy a cheap phone on contract because they are locked into a two-year deal, and that is understandable. But, if you are already going to pay the higher prices of a big carrier like Verizon, AT&T or Sprint, and you plan to keep your phone for a few years it makes sense to buy one of the best  cheap smartphones on the market. If you are looking at cheap on contract smartphones look out for junk phones that carriers are simply trying to unload, and stick with the choices on this list.

For users that want to buy a cheap smartphone off contract there are several options that are worth looking at. Expect to spend at least $100 for one of these cheap smartphones. While that is a lot of money to most people, $100 for an off contract smartphone is a great deal and something we couldn’t find just a year or two ago.

All of these phones are new, but you’ll need to buy them from a store like Amazon, Best Buy or Radio Shack instead of your carrier.

The Moto G is one of our favorite cheap smartphones with an off contract pricer as low as $69 and performance that outranks the price you pay. It's also one of the few cheap off contract phones you'll find on Verizon. Users must pass on 4G LTE and settle for 4G on AT&T or 3G on Verizon, which is a bummer but it is hard to complain too much at $69 on Verizon. The phone only offers 8GB of memory and a 5MP camera so you pass on some features, but you get pretty close to stock Android, fast updates and snappy performance. The Verizon Moto G is $69 off contract at Amazon. There is a Boost Mobile Moto G for $93 on Amazon as well. For users looking to buy an off contract Moto G, Amazon sells one for $179 or a 16GB model for $194.
