Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat Update Hits More Users in U.S.

Published

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update is landing for a number of users in the United States today with two carriers now rolling out the highly anticipated Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4.2 KitKat update.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update has been rolling out since late April but there are still plenty of Galaxy Note 2’s still on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. The roll out has been slow and several carriers say that they plan to push the update out in late June with at least one planning the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update in July.

While the wait for Android 4.4.2 KitKat is only just beginning for some, it appears that it’s now over for owners of two Samsung Galaxy Note 2 models in the United States.

Yesterday, Verizon approved the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update, an approval that came out of nowhere and shocked the Android community. Verizon is well know for lagging to major Android updates and the carrier was dead last, amongst major carriers, to every single major Samsung Galaxy Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update last year.

Today, the Verizon Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update started rolling out to owners and it should be available through a manual pull Over-the-Air. Verizon Galaxy Note 2 users will want to head into their device settings and check for an update. We’re hearing that most people have been able to secure the Android 4.4.3 KitKat upgrades.

As a reminder, here is the full change log:

  • Support for Samsung KNOX 2.0
  • Dual Persona
  • TIMA Real Time Kernel Protection
  • Trust-Zone based ODE
  • Universal MDM Client and Samsung Enterprise Gateway
  • Knox Generic VPN Framework
  • Error code popups fixed in Backup Assistant
  • ‘Search’ icon has been removed within S Memo when there is no memo
  • Favorite ‘Contact’ information background is now more readable
  • Connectivity has been improved when streaming music
  • Stability has been improved for Samsung Gear Manager
  • Text alert improvements for select factory installed car kits
  • Galaxy Gear 2 compatibility

The Verizon Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update isn’t the only Galaxy Note KitKat update available in the U.S. Not to be outdone, U.S. Cellular announced that its Android 4.4.2 KitKat update is now available to manually install. Those looking to bypass the OTA can install the software through Samsung Kies.

We expect U.S. Cellular’s Android 4.4 KitKat update to come with Android 4.4 Kitkat features and perhaps, some enhancements and fixes unique to the device. U.S. carriers typically deliver their own enhancements and fixes with major Android updates and we’ve seen that in action with both the Sprint and Verizon versions of the software.

These two updates mean that there are only two Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat updates remaining in the United States. AT&T and T-Mobile are the two stragglers and unfortunately, neither is offering up any details about potential software upgrades. We have seen the AT&T Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update appear on Samsung’s site but it doesn’t give any clear indication about its roll out date.

U.S. Galaxy Note 2 owners are getting off easy. Carriers in the international community have pushed their Galaxy Note 2 upgrades out to late June and July and it’s possible that we could see some updates push out in August. Samsung’s updates typically take months to complete so this wouldn’t be anything out of the ordinary.

It’s clear that the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update will be landing for all Galaxy Note 2 owners but it’s not clear if Android 4.4.2 KitKat will be the Galaxy Note 2′s last upgrade.

Google recommends 18 months of software support while Samsung typically offers 24 months of support. The Galaxy Note 2 turns two years old in September which means that it’s walking a fine line. Google recently released Android 4.4.3 KitKat for a number of devices and rumors suggest that we could see an Android 4.5 or Android 5.0 update arrive in the summer alongside a new Nexus 8 tablet from HTC.
