iOS 7.1.2 Release Pegged for July to Fix iOS 7.1.1 Problems

The iOS 7.1.2 release date is possible as soon as early July according to a new report that outlines potential fixes to iOS 7.1.1 problems and possibly the iMessage problem that holds text messages hostage when sent to iPhone users that switch to Android.

In May reports of an iOS 7.1.2 update surfaced, ahead of Apple’s iOS 8 announcement at WWDC 2014. iOS 8 is a new version of the iPhone and iPad software scheduled for a Fall release, but it looks like Apple plans to fix several lingering iOS 7.1.1 problems before the fall.

Our iOS 7.1.1 reviews on the iPhone 5s, iPhone 5, iPad Air and iPad mini Retina found Apple delivered a reliable update, but not all users experienced good performance and battery life on iOS 7.1.1.

Shortly after the update arrived we shared five iOS 7.1.1 problems and potential fixes including; bad battery life, WiFi issues, iTunes not recognizing the iPhone, crashes and failures updating to iOS 7.1.1. In early June, users still complained of bad iOS 7.1.1 battery life.

The iOS 7.1.2 release could bring fixes for several iOS 7.1.1 problems in early July.

Apple may be ready to offer a solution to these problems and a security issue that allows someone to bypass the lockscreen and access a previously running application.

iOS 7.1.2 Release & Details

MacRumors reports Apple is almost done with the work on iOS 7.1.2, which is build number 11D257. According to sources, Apple seeded the iOS 7.1.2 update to carriers for testing, which means companies like AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and others are likely testing the iOS 7.1.2 update on the iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPad Air, iPad mini Retina and older devices to make sure it does not impact network connectivity. This type of testing is common ahead of a public release of iOS updates.

Carriers will need to test and sign off on the iOS 7.1.2 update by Friday, if there are no show-stopping problems discovered with carrier testing. This sets users up for an iOS 7.1.2 release date as soon as early July. Apple typically releases small updates like this on Tuesdays, and July 1st is close to a holiday, but still a candidate. MacRumors does not offer a specific iOS 7.1.2 release date, so it is possible that Apple will hold this update until a later date in July.

Apple is normally vague about what small updates like this fix, but the report claims Apple is going after three main areas in iOS 7.1.1.

Mail Fixes

The Mail app leaves email attachments that are stored on the iPhone or iPad unencrypted. This security issue would allow someone with physical access to your phone and the right knowledge to view attachments stored on the iPhone. Apple promised a fix for this problem. The iOS 7.1.2 release would be the first public update since Apple acknowledged the issue.

iOS 7 Lock Screen Bypass

The iOS 7.1.1 update introduced a new lock screen bypass that allows a nefarious user to gain access to the last app in use on the iPhone. The video below shows this in action.

Although the report does not make it clear that this is the exact issue, it is the most recently exposed lock screen bug on the iPhone.

iBeacon & Data Transfer

Other improvements may come to iBeacon problems and data transfer issues between the iPhone and third-party accessories like bar code scanners. iBeacon is a way of using Bluetooth Low energy to share location information with iPhones and iPads. More retailers are using iPhones or iPod touch units as point of sale or inventory systems, which traditionally mount inside of cases that add barcode scanning abilities.

iMessage Problems

Although there is no word from the source, the iOS 7.1.2 update could add in an iMessage fix to allow users that want to switch from iPhone to Android or Windows Phone to do so without the risk of losing access to iMessages. Currently when a user switches from an iPhone messages sent from other Apple users to their phone number may become lost as an iMessage with no phone to go to, instead of arriving as a text.
