Nexus Android 4.4.4 KitKat Update Roll Out Continues

Published

on

Last week, Google started rolling out the Android 4.4.4 KitKat update to replace the Android 4.4.3 KitKat update that began rolling out to Android users earlier this month. While the Android 4.4.4 KitKat release started off slow, it appears that the Android 4.4.4 KitKat release is now pushing out in full force to owners of Google’s Nexus 5, Nexus 7, Nexus 4, and Nexus 10.

Earlier this month, after weeks and weeks of rumor and speculation, Google delivered Android 4.4.3 KitKat to Nexus users, owners of several Google Play Edition devices, and the Moto G, Moto E, and Moto X. The Android 4.4.3 KitKat update is focused on bug fixes but it also delivered a couple of enhancements including changes to the People application and to the dialer.

Then, just a few days later, Google started rolling out another Android 4.4 KitKat update in the form of Android 4.4.4 KitKat, a small update aimed at providing security fixes to Nexus users. The update first started rolling out to Nexus users last week though, in typical Google fashion, the Android 4.4.4 KitKat update has been a little slow to push out.

Today appears to be the start of the massive push that Nexus users have been waiting for. Nexus 7, Nexus 4, and Nexus 5 devices in our possession all received the prompt to install Android 4.4.4 KitKat today, a sign that Google has moved into the next phase of the Android 4.4.4 KitKat roll out. While it’s not a Nexus device, we also saw the Android 4.4.4 KitKat update hit the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition today as well.

While the update may not become available for everyone today, there is a very good chance that we’ll see the Android 4.4.4 KitKat update arrive for most users by the end of the week. Android updates from Google typically take a week or so to push out.

Of course, it may not land for everyone. Nexus 7 LTE users, for instance, are just now getting upgraded to Android 4.4.3 KitKat. That OTA has yet to begin but those who are adept at sideloading can do so now by using the correct files from Google’s AOSP. The same goes for Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10 owners who wish to skip the Android 4.4.4 KitKat OTA.

While many Nexus users are now sitting on Android 4.4.4 KitKat, it’s still not clear if the update will land for other non-Nexus devices. Motorola is the only company that has confirmed upcoming Android 4.4.4 KitKat updates saying that its Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx and Droid Mini will get the update sometime in the next month or so. The company was forced to alter its schedule due to the arrival of Android 4.4.4.

Besides Google's Nexus devices, the Android 4.4.4 KitKat update is expected to land for the Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx and Droid Mini.

Besides Google’s Nexus devices, the Android 4.4.4 KitKat update is expected to land for the Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx and Droid Mini.

The Samsung Galaxy S5, Galaxy S4, HTC One M8 and HTC One M7 are all rumored to be getting Android 4.4.3 KitKat at some point down the road with the HTC updates rumored for June, the Galaxy S5 Android 4.4.3 KitKat update rumored for June and the Galaxy S4 LTE-A Android 4.4.3 KitKat update rumored for July. None of those updates are confirmed and it’s not clear how Android 4.4.4 KitKat might affect their status.

The roll out comes shortly after Google took the curtain down from around its brand new Android update, Android L. Android L is expected to debut later on this year alongside a brand new Nexus 8 tablet from HTC. Google detailed many of its features on stage and is slated to release a beta to developers tomorrow but the company did not detail any specific Android L release date information.

Nexus 8 release rumors point to an arrival in Q3 or Q4 though a specific date for the Android L update’s launch hasn’t been nailed down and likely won’t be until later in the year.

Why don’t you report the F’d Up Mess that 4.4.3 made on everything from Phones to Nexus 5, 7’s and 10’s!! https://www.androidorigin.com/kitkat-update-android-4-4-3-bugs-nexus-10-7-4-5/#comment-36604

    My comment:
    DON’T DO IT!~!!
I’m seeing MUCH LESS Battery Life (increased battery use) since the update on
my (2012) Nexus 7. As much as a 20% increase in battery consumption by the
system and I have the LCD Brightness turned as low as possible with Auto-off
after 1 minute! I didn’t have to do that before this POS update~!!

Thanks you Jerks at Google Android OS Dev!! I’m NOT updating my other (2013) Nexus 7-32GB now!

I have the nexus 5 and updated to 4.4.3 and now the 4.4.4 today morning. I have not experienced any problem with the 4.4.3. In fact the battery life has improved drastically. I can say it has doubled (1.5 to 2 days). 3G, HSPA, WIFI, Auto Brightness works perfect. Very much happy with the updates. I think people who rooted and/or installed custom ROMs are the ones experiencing those issues. Not too sure
