iPhone Deals Offer Savings Ahead of iPhone 6 Release

Brand new iPhone deals cut the prices of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5 down just weeks ahead of the iPhone 6 release.

With iPhone 6 rumors swirling, we’re starting to see retailers start to cut the cost on aging iPhone models including the iPhone 5s, the current iPhone flagship which recently got a permanent price cut at Walmart. We’ve also seen deals on Apple’s other current iPhone, the iPhone 5c, the plastic colorful iPhone model that joined the iPhone 5s on shelves last fall.

If you are only waiting for the iPhone 6 to get an iPhone 5s deal, there is no need to wait.

If you are only waiting for the iPhone 6 to get an iPhone 5s deal, there is no need to wait.

Today, new iPhone deals have sprouted up for both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5. We’ve spotted an iPhone 5s deal at AT&T that takes the device down to $50. Unfortunately, like most iPhone deals, this iPhone 5 deal comes with a few caveats.

First, these deals are for “Certified Like-New” versions of the iPhone 5s. This means that they should look and work as good as a brand new iPhone 5s. Second, the deal requires consumers to sign up with a brand new two-year contract.

AT&T is also offering discounts on the iPhone 5, Apple’s former flagship. The iPhone 5, which is still an extremely solid smartphone and is set to get the iOS 8 update later on this year, is on sale right now through AT&T’s online store. Right now, the carrier has the 64GB iPhone 5 on sale for $250 on-contract and the 32GB iPhone 5 on sale for $150 on-contract.

AT&T was offering the iPhone 5 16GB for free but it appears that that deal has sold out online. It’s possible that the device will come back into stock in the near future with the same price but that’s not guaranteed.

With the iPhone 5 approaching its second birthday, these deals are extremely difficult to recommend. While the iPhone 5 is still a very solid smartphone and one that will be getting the iOS 8 update later on this year, it’s coming up on its second birthday. That’s extremely old in smartphone years and means that software support is running out.

These iPhone deals come just a few days after Walmart permanently cut the price on the iPhone 5s, dropping the the 16GB iPhone 5s down to $99.99 on-contract going forward. Those interested in the deal must buy the iPhone 5s for AT&T, Sprint, U.S. Cellular, or Verizon in a Walmart store and sign up with a new two year contract, something that will make the choice extremely difficult given that the iPhone 6 is expected to make its debut in a few weeks.

Walmart is also offering a permanent price cut on the iPhone 5c, the plastic model that accompanied the iPhone 5s at launch. The iPhone 5c, Apple’s $99 vibrantly colored iPhone, costs just $29 through Walmart stores. Again, those looking to take advantage of the deal must sign a new contract locking the device in for two years.

They also come just days after eBay dropped the price on its unlocked iPhone 5 models to new lows.

These new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5 deals are tempting but consumers will need to weigh them against the upcoming iPhone 6. iPhone 6 rumors have been swirling for months, teasing consumers with potential features and dates. Rumors suggest that the iPhone 6 will come with a number of upgrades including a brand new design, a new camera that offers image stabilization, iOS 8, an A8 processor for better battery life and performance, Touch ID, better screen resolution, and two new screen sizes including a 4.7-inch model and a 5.5-inch iPhone 6.

Release date rumors suggest that Apple could release these two iPhone 6’s at the same time despite rumors that pointed to two separate release dates. September 19th and September 25th have been thrown around as potential release dates though neither date has been confirmed.

It’s not clear where the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c will fit into the iPhone lineup once the new iPhone 6 arrives though there is a chance both will stick around. Apple is known for offering an iPhone lineup that hits on several different price points and with the iPhone 6 rumored to cost $199.99 and $299.99 for the larger model, it could find a way to slot the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c into discounted roles.

The iPhone 5 fell out of favor after the arrival of these two smartphones though retailers like eBay and AT&T continue to keep it alive as a budget alternative to the flagship iPhone 5s.
