5 Phones to Consider Before Buying the LG G2 [July, 2014]

Earlier this month, LG released the all new LG G3 to replace the LG G2 as its flagship smartphone and top contender. However, the arrival of the LG G3 doesn’t mean that the LG G2 is no longer an option. In fact, we highly recommend taking a look at it if you’re in the market for a new phone this month. That said, there are some devices we think you need to consider before diving in with LG’s flagship from 2013.

Last year, LG was beaten to the market by the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One. Samsung and HTC released their flagships in April while the LG G2 was released in the fall, in September, right around the iPhone 5s release. And while it launched much later than the other Android flagships, the LG G2 was one of the year’s best smartphones and arguably the best Android device on the market.

Less then a year after it debuted the LG G2, LG announced, and released, the brand new LG G3. The LG G3 is a powerful successor to the LG G2 and a device that will emerge on major U.S. carriers before the month is over. While the LG G3 represents the high-end of LG’s smartphone lineup, the LG G2 is still around and in our opinion remains a solid choice.

The LG G2 is less than a year old, features superb hardware, fantastic software, and a price tag that is ridiculously low thanks to its age. Retailers like Amazon are giving it away for free. So, it’s not surprising to learn that people are still interested in last year’s model.

We are constantly bombarded with questions about which phones to buy. In particular, we’re constantly asked about the phones consumers should weigh against the LG G2. There are a number of different devices that we could recommend, the smartphone market is full of solid choices, but we want to narrow things down a bit and take a look at what we consider to be the top five.

These devices represent the devices that we’d recommend to friends and family. And while our list may differ from yours, these are the devices that Gotta Be Mobile editors have selected for recognition this month. We feel like the devices listed here deliver the best, all-around package for this month and this month alone.

LG G3

The LG G3 is finally here in the United States and if you're thinking about buying into LG's ecosystem, you absolutely must weigh this year's model against last year's flagship.

LG's brand new flagship replaces the LG G2 and it does so with some key upgrades including a beautiful QHD display, solid camera with Optical Image Stabilization, good battery life, faster processor, and a whole lot more. We like this phone. In fact, we like it so much that we think it's the best Android smartphone on the market.

It helps that Amazon is offering it for just $99, $100 more than the LG G2. That's an absolute steal for a device of this caliber and one of the reasons why you need to rule the current model out.

Funny, I swapped my LG G2 for a Nokia 1020 and have upgraded it to 8.1 with the Developer Preview option (which by the way anyone can be part of easily and for free) and I haven’t looked back. The Nokia 1020 with 8.1 completely outclasses the G2 or any of the other phones listed here minus the G3 which is a stout competitor. I say it’s funny because while the Nokia is also a year old, it is still regarded by those that use it as a powerful sturdy device with surprising capabilities for it’s age. Word has it that the Nokia Mclaren (code name) is the next phone that will succeed the 1020′s place atop the camera phone heap that the 1020 has held for over a year. Can’t wait to see that beast and hope it keeps up with the 1020′s robustness and capabilities.

The N5 is an appealing prospect. But considering price an screen realestate. I think I’ll go whit the G2. I mean, compared with the likes of the SGS4, HTC’s one m7 and motoX.
