This iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 video includes the iPhone 5s that is now on sale as cheap as $99 on contract and an iPhone 6 dummy unit that brings the iPhone 6 rumors to life in a beautiful representation of aluminum and glass. Although the final iPhone 6 design may change slightly, this is what many case makers believe the new iPhone will look like.

For buyers sitting on an upgrade it is tempting to buy the iPhone 5s, especially if you are using an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s that feels slow, old or small compared to the iPhone 5s, but there are plenty of differences worth looking at between the two devices.

iPhone 6 rumors point to two new iPhones in 2014, though the largest iPhone 6 model may not arrive at the same time. In this iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 comparison we look at the iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch display. This is what many iPhone 6 rumors focus on, and the device that Apple will likely sell the most of. The iPhone 6 mock-up in this video arrived from China, where it was on sale to case makers that want to test the fit of iPhone 6 cases and cell phone shops that want to tease the new iPhone.

The iPhone 6 release is weeks away, and while this is not a working iPhone 6 prototype, it is the best representation of what  we think the new iPhone will look like.

iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 Video

The iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 video below offers a look at what you can expect from the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 5s. If you are thinking of waiting, but not sure you’ll like the new design or a bigger iPhone 6, this is how it compares to the iPhone 5s. If you own an iPhone 5, as many potential upgraders do, the bulk of this comparison is still valid.

iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 Size

When you compare the iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 size it is immediately clear that the new iPhone is bigger than the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5. This is necessary to accommodate the larger 4.7-inch display. The iPhone 6 mock-up in the video above, and in multiple photos below is for a new iPhone with a 4.7-inch display. The iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s feature a 4-inch display.

Although the iPhone 6 is bigger than the iPhone 5s, the photos below show that it is not much bigger thanks to thin bezels on the sides and curved edges. Leaked iPhone 6 front panels made of Sapphire show slightly curved edges that slope down to meet the curved edge of the iPhone 6 body.

With a 4.7-inch display the iPhone 6 is larger than the iPhone 5s, but not significantly wider.

With a 4.7-inch display the iPhone 6 is larger than the iPhone 5s, but not significantly wider.

This combination results in a new iPhone that is slightly wider and a little taller. In the iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 photos below you can see that the iPhone 6 mock-up is not more than a pencil width thick. The Apple MagSafe 2 adapter sits on the edge to show the small change in width.

The iPhone 6 is taller than the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 by about one extra bezel. Placing this adapter on the side shows how much taller the iPhone 6 is.

Overall the iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 photos show a larger iPhone, but not one that is as big as a Galaxy Note 3 with a massive screen. The overall size of the iPhone 6 mock-up shows a bigger, but not too big device.

iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 Design

The first thing you’ll notice when comparing the iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 design is the switch from chamfered edges and straight sides to a more curved and rounded look on the new iPhone.

Starting at the bottom we see a headphone jack, lighting connection and new layout with one opening for the microphone and another larger set of openings for the speaker. Although the iPhone 5s shows matching grilles, only one is for a speaker. This is only a mock-up, so we could see Apple make things symmetrical once again with a full grille on both sides of a headphone jack.

The iPhone 6 design shows more curves and new button placement from the iPhone 5s.

All of the sides are now curved, making the iPhone 6 easy to hold even with a larger overall footprint. On the left side is a power button, which is easy to hit while holding the iPhone 6 with one hand. This is a design choice Samsung uses on the Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy S5, and it is good to see Apple adopt it as well. There is also a single SIM slot on this side. There is no opening for a MicroSD card, which is not a surprise.

In this iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 photo you can see a new design for the volume buttons. The buttons are now thinner and longer, to fit on a thinner curved edge. There is still a switch to control silent mode on the right edge.

This iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 comparison shows a similar thickness, but the new iPhone may end up smaller.

This iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 comparison shows a similar thickness, but the new iPhone may end up smaller.

Some early iPhone 6 mock-ups and rumors suggest a very thing iPhone 6, but the mock-up we purchased from China is not as thin as an iPod touch. It is also not as thick as the iPhone 5s. The iPhone 5s is 7.6mm thick, and the difference in thickness is less than a paperclip. Mock ups are not designed to the same stringent quality control as a real iPhone, so it is possible that predictions of a 7mm thick iPhone 6 are true.

This iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 photo shows a new design for the back of the iPhone, without glass like the iPhone 5s.

When you compare the iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 backs, the potential design changes stand out further. The back of the iPhone 5s is aluminum and glass. The glass sections at the top and bottom allow the antennas inside to communicate with routers, cell towers and Bluetooth accessories. It is difficult for this communication through solid metal.

The white lines on the back of this iPhone 6 mock-up indicate areas where the antenna may communicate, and leaked parts show an open Apple logo which could also play a role. At least one report claims the white lines will not be as prevalent on the final design. It is possible they are shown to let case makers or engineers know areas that need to remain clear. Lines on the HTC One M8 that serve a similar function look much nicer on the final product.

The white lines on this iPhone 6 mock-up may be less obvious, closer to the design of the HTC One M8.

Although the iPhone 6 design may change and the iPhone 6 that hits store shelves will be of higher quality than this mock-up, this should help you understand the major design differences between the iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6.

iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 One Hand Usage

Apple makes a big deal about using the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5 with one hand. It was part of their presentation of the 4-inch display on the iPhone 5, and remains a concern for potential iPhone 6 buyers. Although this is a non-functioning iPhone 6, a 4.7-inch display in this size does not appear to present significant challenges to one-handed use.

With average size hands a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is still possible to use with one-hand.

With average size hands a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is still possible to use with one-hand.

While using the same grip as on the iPhone 5s and the Nexus 5, I cannot reach every corner of the iPhone 6 display, but I am able to touch the important parts of the display and the TouchID enabled home button below it. the far upper corner is a stretch, and my thumbpad does touch on the edge of the screen when i do reach it.

The upper right corner is reachable with a slight adjustment to grip, but adding a case could make this harder with a bigger frame to hold on to. Ultimately I don’t think a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will prevent one-handed use for many users, but those with small hands may prefer the smaller screen and size of the iPhone 5s.

The upper right corner of the iPhone display is where many apps place at least one button. It may be a compose button on Tweetdeck, or access to friends online in Facebook. Whatever it is, there are reasons users will need to touch the top corner so be prepared to adjust your grip.

Although functioning, the size does seem to lend itself well to typing out messages with one hand, and the Messages app lends itself to a low typing grip thanks to gestures to go back a page.

Apple may be able to build in detection for errant taps, like it does on the iPad mini and iPad Air to prevent accidental touches. It’s not clear what kind of changes Apple plans for iOS 8 on a bigger screen to help usability, but don’t expect a one-handed mode like Samsung offers.

iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 Features

On top of a bigger screen there are a number of potential iPhone 6 features Apple may add to the new iPhone. Even with an iOS 8 update this fall, we don’t expect the iPhone 5s will match the iPhone 6 feature for feature. Rumors suggest the iPhone 6 will feature TouchID, like the iPhone 5s. Expect both of these to offer more functionality thanks to iOS 8.

Expect an updated processor and other new iPhone 6 features like an improved camera.

Expect an updated processor and other new iPhone 6 features like an improved camera.

The iPhone 5s features a 64-bit Apple A7 processor with M7 coprocessor. The A7 processor is dual-core with 1GB of RAM. Recent iPhone 6 rumors suggest an Apple A8 processor that is also 64-bit and dual core with 1GB of RAM. It may be clocked at 2GHz and it would not be surprising to see an Apple M8 coprocessor as well.

Apple may use an 8MP camera on the iPhone 6, which is the same rating as the iPhone 5s camera, but reports suggest there is an upgrade coming. It may be in the form of bigger pixels that improve low light photography or through image stabilization that can help users take better looking photos.

The additional iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 mock up photos below show the potential new design for the iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch display compared to the 4-inch iPhone 5s display.

In this comparison it is clear that Apple will ditch the Gorilla glass and replace it with large Sapphire display along with higher resolution and may have built in qi back cover that means directly compatible with qi wireless charger.
