How to Fix Loading Icon Issues in iOS 7.1

Do you ever notice that loading icon up in the status bar on your iPhone or iPad is constantly spinning? Here’s a quick way to fix it.

After updating to iOS 7.1 earlier this year, you may have noticed that the small loading icon in the status bar is active more than usual. This spinning icon indicates that your iPhone or iPad is currently doing something, whether it’d be syncing data across devices, loading up an app or refreshing data, etc.

However, you may have noticed the icon showing up more often since updating to iOS 7.1. Sometimes it’ll be spinning away in the status bar without any apps open or anything, which can be a bit mysterious.

Apparently, a quick Google search revealed that a ton of iPhone and iPad users have experienced this problem, where the spinning loading icon just won’t go away, even after you close all apps and just keep it idle on the home screen. Sometimes turning off your iPhone or iPad and turning it back will get rid of the issue for a few minutes, but it will usually just right come back.

What’s Causing This?

This spinning loading icon is actually referred to as the “network activity icon” by Apple, and it appears in the upper-left corner of your iPhone or iPad’s screen in the status bar.

It shows up whenever your iOS device is either downloading or uploading information over the internet, such as Photo Stream uploads and downloads, app downloads and updates from the App Store, automatic downloads (music, books, and apps), and more.

However, even if your iPhone isn’t doing any of these things, the icon will still spin away for some unknown reason. A lot of users — myself included — are experiencing this issue after upgrading to iOS 7.1. However, there’s a really easy fix that takes just a few seconds, and it will get rid of the annoying spinning status bar icon once and for all.

How to Fix It

To fix this issue, all you’ll do is perform a hard restart. This may sound like it completely wipes your entire iPhone or iPad to factory settings, but it doesn’t. All of your data, settings and info will still be there when you reboot the device.

To perform a hard restart on your iPhone or iPad, simply just press and hold down on the Home button and the Power button at the same time. Keep pressing down on both buttons even when the device’s screen turns off. Let go when you see the silver Apple logo appear on screen.

Next, just wait for the device to boot up to the lock screen and you’ll be good to go. From there, you can unlock it and begin using it as before. From now on, you shouldn’t be seeing a constant spinning loading icon in the status bar, but if it ever pops up again, just simply do a hard restart to flush it out.

iOS 7 hasn’t been immune to any problems for its users. More recently, a lot of users were having difficulties with updating to iOS 7.1.2, noting that their iPhones would freeze halfway through the process and that restarting the device seemed to fix the issues. Unfortunately, this doesn’t look like something you can prevent from happening in the first place, but most users are agreeing that simply rebooting your iPhone will fix the problem, and the iOS 7.1.2 update will proceed without a problem.

Because of that, we put together our own handy guide on how to update to iOS 7.1.2 without any problems (or at least how to update to lessen the chances of coming across any problems).
