Top 5 Phones to Consider Before Buying the Moto X [August, 2014]

Motorola’s Moto X is still a solid Android smartphone option and a device that consumers in the hunt should take a look at before buying a new smartphone this month. However, before taking the plunge with the Moto X in the month of August, there are five smartphones that we think you must consider.

The Moto X was one of the most interesting smartphone releases of 2013. Motorola, long known for its Droid series, finally branched out and released a new line in the “Moto” series. The Moto X was joined by the Moto E and Moto G but it remains the company’s flagship smartphone thanks to a number of enticing features.

It doesn’t come with a 1080p display or absurd processor but the Moto X does feature a quality camera, smart Motorola-enhanced Android software, and a design that’s customizable thanks to Motorola’s Moto Maker program. Moto Maker allows buyers to pick their own colors and even tack on a wood back if they so choose. Moto Maker is just one of the reasons why consumers are still intrigued by Motorola’s aging flagship.

We are constantly bombarded with questions about which phones to buy. In particular, we’re constantly asked about the phones consumers should weigh against the Moto X. There are a number of different devices that we could recommend, the smartphone market is full of solid choices, but we want to narrow things down a bit and take a look at what we consider to be the top five.

These smartphones represent the devices that we’d recommend to friends and family. And while our list may differ from yours, these are the devices that Gotta Be Mobile editors have selected for recognition this month. We feel like the devices listed here deliver the best, all-around package for this month and this month alone.

That said, here are the top five smartphones to consider before buying the Moto X in August.

LG G2

LG G2

If you're looking at the Moto X, you're probably trying to find a high quality Android smartphone that's cheap on contract. And maybe, just maybe, you're looking for a flagship or at least a device that was once a flagship, that comes with a mimimal UI. The LG G2 fits that profile and it's a device worth looking at.

While it was recently replaced by the LG G3, the LG G2 isn't even a year old yet. And thus, its hardware, software, everything holds up. It helps that the LG G2 is also extremely inexpensive. Amazon, for instance, is practically giving it away on-contract.

We like the LG G2 more than the Moto X and now that its price tag has dipped to absurd levels, we think it's worth checking out before picking up Motorola's device.
