Microsoft’s iPhone 6 Rival Could Pack Powerful Surprise

Published

Neither Microsoft nor Apple have announced the specifications for their upcoming smartphones, but if new rumors about the Lumia 830 are accurate then Microsoft is planning on announcing a serious rival for the iPhone 6 – at least, where imaging is concerned.

WP Dang, a Chinese Windows Phone website with a proven track record of providing accurate information about future Windows Phone handsets is reporting that the Lumia 830 will include a 5 megapixel front-facing camera to rival the iSight camera that’s currently used in Apple’s iPhone and Android smartphones. Allegedly, on its rear will be a 10 megapixel rear-facing camera – besting what’s available in iPhones and what some rumors indicate will be in the iPhone 6 when Apple announces it at an event soon. The iPhone 5s has an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera.

The Lumia 830 having a decent camera is key to its success. Without a steady supply of Windows Phones in America, rumors indicate that Microsoft is counting on the Lumia 830 being its mainstream work horse as we head into the holiday season. As the reports go, the Lumia 830 will be available on multiple carriers alongside the HTC One M8 for Windows. An 8 megapixel rear-facing camera will help the Lumia 830 stand out since most agree that the HTC One M8 for Windows’ UltraPixel camera doesn’t hold up to what most high-end smartphones offer. That rumored 5 megapixel camera will also help the Lumia 830 stand out – provided new smartphone buyers are heavily interested in taking self-portraits. Microsoft hinted at there being announcements where self-portraits are concerned  in its invitation for the More Lumia event on September 4th. The picture on that invitation has three people taking a picture of themselves with what could be the Lumia 830.

One of the first things buyers investigate when deciding to pick up a new smartphone is camera quality. The smartphone camera has become ubiquitous, most people don’t even carry a dedicated camera because they prefer the convenience of taking out their smartphone and snapping shots. A good camera is the difference between reliving key moments in your life or wondering why you just didn’t opt to spend a bit more and get a better phone.

Reportedly, the Lumia 830 will include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and a 720p display that’s capable of 720p video playback too.

In the last few weeks, leaked photos of the device have showed a design that mixes the rear-facing black camera pod the photo-centric Lumia 1020 and the design flourishes of the Lumia 925. Like the Lumia 925 – and the iPhone 5s and possibly iPhone 6 – a metal band around the phone’s edge will act as antenna. The back part of the Lumia 830 will have colored polycarbonate so that users can customize the device to their liking. Older leaked photos also indicated that the cover hides a space for a removable battery and a microSD slot.

Unfortunately, we don’t yet know how much the Lumia 830 will cost, but if the rumored specifications are true then users should look for the device to be an iPhone 6 rival without a low-end price-tag. Historically, Nokia phones in the 800 range have offered a few high-end features at a cheaper price tag with more must-have options. For example, Nokia phones in the 900 range don’t include removable batteries or microSD card slots for adding more storage when it’s needed.

Microsoft, who purchased Nokia’s handset and services division earlier this year, is expected to reveal the Lumia 830 at that aforementioned event on September 4th. Last week Apple announced plans for a press event on September 9th.

When either the Lumia 830 or iPhone 6 will arrive on store shelves remains unclear.

Too bad the high end 900 series Lumia was postponed because the 3d touch was not ready.
