8 Reasons Not to Update on iOS 8 Release Day

Published

on

The iOS 8 release date is confirmed for tomorrow just two days ahead of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus release date. And with the iOS 8 release date at hand, we want to take a look at some reasons why iPhone and iPad owners might want to think about skipping Apple’s brand new iOS 8 update on its release day.

Last week, Apple confirmed a number of new products for arrival including a new Apple Watch, two new iPhones in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and the iOS 8 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. iOS 8 was originally confirmed at WWDC 2014 though at the time, Apple declined to get into specifics about its release date. Instead, it plopped it into its beta program and announced that it would release it to the public this fall.

As expected, those details were confirmed at the company’s annual iPhone launch event. The iOS 8 update will land for iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5, iPhone 4s, iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina Display, iPad 4, iPad 3, iPad 2, iPad mini, and iPod touch fifth-gen users on September 17th, tomorrow, and just a couple of days before the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus release date that’s set for Friday.

Tomorrow, those that haven’t used the iOS 8 beta or the newly released iOS 8 beta will find themselves staring into the face of a brand new iOS update that delivers design tweaks, enhancements to older iOS apps and brand new features that are exclusive to iOS 8. It’s not as big as iOS 7 but it’s an important update nonetheless. It’s also an update that you might not want to install tomorrow morning when it rolls out.

There’s reason to be excited about the iOS 8 update but there’s also plenty of reason to hold off and wait for another day. Here, we take a look at some reasons why you iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users might want to think about holding out when tomorrow’s iOS 8 release arrives.

If You’re Jailbroken

If you are an iPhone and iPad owners who is jailbroken on iOS 7.1 or below, you should avoid updating to iOS 8 in order to keep their device jailbroken. It’s that simple.

iOS-7.1.1-jailbreak

While iOS 8 will bring some features that should be enticing to those of you that have used a jailbreak on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, there are still some great reasons to remain jailbroken for the time being. Access to Cydia applications, customization, you name it.

It’s still not clear when developers will release an iOS 8 jailbreak for iPhone and iPad but there’s a good chance that a release is weeks if not months away. Specifics remain in the shadows and it’s possible that they’ll remain that way until the release.

You Don’t Want to Deal with Bugs

The iOS 7 release saw a number of bugs emerge right from the get go and there’s a very good chance that the iOS 8 update, despite the beta processor, will arrive with some bugs on board as well.

iOS updates, like all software updates, have the tendency to wreck havoc on some devices. Wi-Fi issues, battery drain, general sluggishness, and more are typical. Apple does extensive testing before releasing its major iOS updates but there are always a few issues that slip thru the cracks.

iOS 8 beta wiped out most of the major issues, the widespread ones that affect most device owners, but we should still see Apple’s new update cause problems on day one. So, those that are experiencing relative calm on iOS 7.1 or below might want to think about holding off because there’s a chance that the peace you’re experiencing on your device could be broken by iOS 8.

In fact, it might be worth holding off until iOS 8.0.x. Apple tends to roll out bug fixers within a few days of its initial release so we could see an iOS 8 bug fix update land sometime in September or October to wipe out some of the initial issues.

You Own an iPad 2 or iPhone 4s

Historically, the older a device is, the more problems it has. Last year, some of the most vocal iOS 7 users were iPhone 4, iPhone 4s and iPad 2 owners. Unfortunately, many users ran into an assortment of issues including performance problems. iOS 8 might be smaller than iOS 7 in terms of scope but that doesn’t mean that it’s not a massive update. It is and there’s a chance it could cause some problems for older devices.

iPhone-4-4s

If you want to play it safe, hold out tomorrow. That way, you can take a wait and see approach and wait for reviews from guinea pigs, also known as your fellow iPhone and iPad users. We’ll also provide as much information as we can possibly can in an effort to ensure that you don’t walk into an iOS nightmare on your aging device.

Avoid iOS 8 Installation Problems

We almost always see installation issues arise on iOS release dates, either due to Apple server issues or due to other errors that pop up during the installation process. While we may not see the chaos that we saw with the iOS 7 update last year, there’s a very good chance that errors will pop up tomorrow during the iOS 8 release day.

Those of you that don’t want to deal with the nonsense that sometimes accompanies the installation process on iOS release day should just remain patient. iOS 8 isn’t going anywhere and you’ll be able to install it on Thursday or Friday as well. There’s no rush and avoiding these potential issues is a very good reason to hold off on installing tomorrow.

If You Have Critical Apps

Many of you use applications to get through the school day or workday. And while developers have started updating their applications for compatibility with iOS 8, there will likely be some that don’t get updates by the time iOS 8 arrives. This, perhaps, could translate into serious issues that could threaten your productivity tomorrow.

iPad Air

If you are going to be reliant on apps throughout the day for work flow or something else, it’s going to be best to hold off on installing iOS 8 until an app is updated with support or if reviews indicate that the coast is clear. Most should be fine but it’s not worth the risk if you’re doing something extremely important tomorrow.

If You’re Traveling

Those of you who are traveling may want to hold off on installing iOS 8 to the iPad or iPhone because there could be issues that affect files on board. This is particularly troublesome for travelers who haven’t backed up their data. If something were to go wrong, not having easy access to a personal computer could make things more difficult.

Unless you’re on a business trip of some kind, we highly recommend waiting until you’re back. iOS 8 isn’t going anywhere and it will be waiting for you when you get back.

If You’re Unprepared

If you aren’t prepared for the iOS 8 release date, do not install the iOS 8 update tomorrow. If you haven’t had time to back up your data, clean up your device, get iTunes upgraded, or research iOS 8 itself, you will want to think about holding off until all of that is done.

iPhone 5s

Lucky for you, we’ve developed an iOS 8 preparedness plan for those of you that don’t know where to start. This will get you prepared for tomorrow’s release but again, there’s no reason to rush into things. Take your time, make sure you’re prepared, and your transition from iOS 7.1 or below will be a much smoother process.

If You’re Using an iPhone/iPad for Work

In the past, we’ve seen iOS updates cause problems for people using their iPhone or iPad for work. We’ve seen Exchange issues occur with iOS updates and we’ve seen folks run into battery life issues with their work phone on days when problems are unacceptable.

So, those who are using an iPhone as a work phone may want to hold off until iOS 8 bugs can be established and until a company gives the go-ahead to install the software, something that may not necessarily come on day one.

I’m an early adopter and I installed iOS 8 the moment it became available :) on my two iPhones (5 and 5s).
I seems to be working much smoother on 5, and I’ve already noticed some bugs on 5s e.g. There’s NO full screen caller picture – the screen looks exactly the same as it did on iOS 7.2 (surprisingly, full screen caller picture works perfectly fine on my iPhone 5 :)) and battery life seems to be much worse as well…
I’m really counting on iOS 8.1 to be released pretty soon :)
