iPhone 6 vs iPhone 5s: 5 Things Buyers Need to Know

Published

on

If you are looking to buy a new iPhone in 2014 you need to compare the iPhone 6 vs iPhone 5s. For some buyers this may be to discover why the iPhone 5s is $100 cheaper and for others it is to figure out if it is worth an early upgrade to the iPhone 6.

No matter which buyer you are this comparison will help you figure out the most important differences between the new iPhone 6 and the $99 iPhone 5s.

The most obvious difference is that the Phone 6 features a bigger screen with a higher resolution. Most shoppers will also quickly notice the new iPhone 6 design, but this comparison is about more than fresh new looks and a bigger, better display.

Although there is little reason to buy the iPhone 5c, the iPhone 5s is still a great phone for many buyers — as long as they go in knowing what it can and cannot do.

We’ll focus on the most important differences that new iPhone shoppers need to look at when they decide to buy the iPhone 6. Apple also announced an iPhone 6 Plus with a 5.5-inch display, but we are focusing on the regular iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch display.

Here’s what you need to know about the iPhone 6 and iPhone 5s before you upgrade or buy a new iPhone this year.

iPhone 6 vs iPhone 5s Display

The iPhone 6 features a 4.7-inch 1,334 x 750 resolution display. This is bigger than the 4-inch 1,136 x 640 resolution display on the iPhone 5s. For apps that are not updated for this larger display, the iPhone 6 scales them up. We expect to see many iPhone 6 app updates in the coming weeks.

The iPhone 6 screen is bigger, but still usable with one hand.

Even though the iPhone 6 display is bigger, it is still a Retina Display thanks to the higher resolution. It delivers the same 326 pixels per inch as the iPhone 5s, so you won’t give up quality by going with a bigger display.

Using the iPhone 6 one-handed should not be an issue for most users, and a new side-mounted power button simplifies turning the phone off with one hand. There is a Reachability mode that drops the top half of the screen down when double tap on the home button, in case you can’t reach the top of the display.

iPhone 6 vs iPhone 5s Size & Design

The iPhone 6 is larger than the iPhone 5s, but not that much. You will notice that the iPhone 6 is taller and wider than the iPhone 5s, but it is also thinner and lighter. Couple this with a new design that fits into your hand easier and it’s still something you can hold and carry all day.

There are a lot of concern about the iPhone 6 fitting in a pocket. The good news is the iPhone 6 fits in the pocket of mens jeans easily. Women may run into an issue thanks to shallow pockets, but the problem isn’t as pronounced as with the iPhone 6 Plus.

Apple switched from the metal and glass design of the iPhone 5s to an all metal design for the iPhone 6. This includes small bars at the top and bottom of the back that some users don’t like. The iPhone 6 camera also sticks out slightly off the back of the device.

iPhone 6 vs iPhone 5s Features

The iPhone 6 includes several new features that you will not find on the iPhone 5s, even with an iOS 8 update. Here are a few of the most exciting new iPhone 6 features.

Better iPhone 6 Camera

Both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 include an 8MP camera, but on the iPhone 6 it includes larger pixels and some other cool new technology. Apple uses focus pixels which they claim help the camera focus faster and better. There is also improved face detection on the iPhone 6, and the option to record even better slow motion video.

Apple Pay

The iPhone 6 includes NFC, a small chip that can securely communicate with credit card readers at a growing number of retailers. A free software update in October will turn on Apple Pay, which will allow you to store your credit and debit card in the iPhone 6 and tap to pay at participating retailers. The iPhone 5s does not support this.

Power, Battery Life & Touch ID

With a faster Apple A8 processor the new iPhone 6 will be capable of running more power-hungry or graphically intense apps. Apple Also claims you can expect a better Touch ID experience than on the iPhone 5s. Both iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 now allow other apps to use Touch ID as part of the iOS 8 update.

The iPhone 6 includes a larger battery that should deliver a slightly longer run time, even with a bigger display.

iPhone 6 vs iPhone 5s Price & Storage

The iPhone 5s is $100 cheaper than the iPhone 6 when you compare the price of the base models at $99 and $199 on a two-year contract.

We’ll see some iPhone 5s deals that drop the price significantly in the coming weeks, but it may be a while before the iPhone 6 price flirts with $99.

iPhone 6 storage size to buy

Some shoppers may wonder if they should buy the 32GB iPhone 5s or the 16GB iPhone 6. This is a tough call because storage is important, but with everything else that the iPhone 6 offers it may be better to go with the new iPhone.

Apple now sells a 64GB iPhone 6 for $299 on contract, $100 cheaper than the 64GB iPhone 5s sold last year. There is no more iPhone 5s 64GB option once carriers sell through any leftover stock. For the first time Apple offers an iPhone 6 with 128GB of storage for $399.
