Assassin’s Creed Unity Special Editions: Which Should You Buy?

Published

on

With Assassin’s Creed Unity, video game developer Ubisoft is on the cusp of two different revolutions, and that makes choosing the right Assassin’s Creed Unity Special Edition to purchase very, very important.

The first is a literal revolution, Assassin’s Creed Unity dumps the North American setting of the series’ past two games – and a third if you count this year’s Assassin’s Creed Rogue. Instead of American Colonies or the Caribbean, Assassin’s Creed Unity takes place just as common folk declare war on the establishment and start murdering the French aristocracy during the French Revolution.

The second revolution is more figurative than literal. Assassin’s Creed Unity is set to be the first game in the franchise to be available on a next-generation gaming console. Forget the Xbox 360 and PS3, Assassin’s Creed Unity will only be available on Microsoft’s Xbox One, Sony’s PS4 gaming console and the Windows PC. The game is packed with feature changes and additions to match this new hardware too.

Assassin’s Creed Unity – The Standard Edition

Instead of going the over complicated route, developer Ubisoft has cut the different versions of the game down to size. The first and most popular version of Assassin’s Creed Unity is the basic version.

At $59.99 it’ll be the cheapest way to get in on the Assassin’s Creed Unity experience. Buyers will get a disc based copy of the game. Those who buy this version stand to pick up a few extras. For example, GameStop buyers get a free mission add-on called Chemical Revolution, according to the company’s pre-order pages. Buyers of this version of Assassin’s Creed also get a spear weapon to use in the game that’s exclusive to others who’ve purchased from GameStop.

Importantly, this version of the game doesn’t include any codes for getting add-ons and feature packs that come after the game’s release. What that means is that any story related content that makes its way to users after release will come free with this version. Users will be stuck buying that extra content by itself for around $10-$15 or purchasing an Assassin’s Creed Unity Season Pass.

Assassin’s Creed Unity – Collector’s Edition

Whereas Assassin’s Creed Unity Standard Edition is meant for those who want the game and the game alone, the Assassin’s Creed Unity Collector’s Edition is Ubisoft dropping a proverbial bomb on longtime fans of the franchise.

First there’s a copy of the game itself. It’s included in the Assassin’s Creed Unity Collector’s Edition. Users get a copy of the game’s soundtrack to relive their glory days wherever they are. An art book with scenes and characters that are featured in the game is included too. So is – strangely enough – a music box whose significance will likely be explained better in the game’s story. Finally, a 16-inch figure of Arno, Assassin’s Creed Unity’s main protagonist in the game will be included. All of this will be stuffed inside a collector’s edition case.

For those who are wondering where the real extras for the game are, add-on content is include in the Assassin’s Creed Unity Collector’s Edition too. Two in-game missions, which Ubisoft is billing as 45 minutes of extra gameplay, will come in the bundle free of charge.

Buyers will be able to get all of this for $129.99 or roughly double what Assassin’s Creed Unity Special Edition costs.

Which Assassin’s Creed Unity Special Edition to Buy?

So which to spend your hard-earned money on? One might think that it’s overly complicated, but it’s not. By not offering too many special edition bundles, Ubisoft has made it incredibly easy by dividing everyone into just two groups.

First, there’s the hardcore Assassin’s Creed fans. Clearly, if you’re even considering spending $129.99 on extras that don’t really effect the core gameplay beyond the 2 in-game missions, you fall into that category. If you’re not tempted by a 16-inch figurine than you should clearly not be considering the Assassin’s Creed Unity Collector’s Edition bundle, go with the basic version instead. It isn’t likely that you’ll be able to buy the figure and art book separately, but those are small things if you’re only looking to pick up a game to play and not trinkets to keep on a mantle.

With that said, everyone should keep in mind that neither of these bundles include a season pass. Again, any content that is released after the game will need to be purchased separately. That could get expensive. Buyers could invest in a season pass card for $30.

Assassin’s Creed Unity for the Xbox One and PS4 launches on November 11th, the same day as Assassin’s Creed Rogue does on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Again, because it takes advantage of latest-generation hardware, it won’t be available on the Xbox 360 or PS3. No backward compatibility is why Ubisoft plans to release Assassin’s Creed Rogue on the same day.
