iPhone 6 Plus Unboxing Video and First Impressions

Published

on

Apple shipped out the Apple iPhone 6 Plus recently and we got a chance to do an unboxing of the new 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus for our readers on camera. The iPhone 6 Plus competes with phones like the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, LG G3 and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 4. The plus indicates the larger size of Apple’s two new phones, with the iPhone 6 measuring 4.7-inches and the plus at 5.5-inches.

Owners of earlier iPhone generations will notice the difference in size of the iPhone 6 Plus before they open the box.

iPhone owners will immediately notice the difference before they even open the box: it’s clearly larger. Aside from that, the packaging comes with typical Apple quality and an easy unboxing experience… if the person does it like we did over a table. A video circulating on the web shows a new iPhone owner dropping his new iPhone 6 after opening it live on camera for an Australian TV crew. He accidentally flung the phone onto the hard pavement. Others intentionally dropped the new iPhone 6 on to test the phone’s durability.

The rounded edges feel good in the hand. The typical iPhone quality shines through.

As a former iPhone fan who went to Android for a larger screen, I love the big display. The iPhone’s fast processor and graphics system mean that everything swipes smoothly from screen to screen. It starts noticeably faster and restarts faster than earlier generations.

One hiccup marred the otherwise excellent first-time setup experience. The screen where the user inputs a Wi-Fi password froze. When it came to life, all the attempts to get a response by tapping the keyboard resulted in the password box filling up with a long string of letters. Only a hard restart fixed the problem, but the problem never showed up again in the few minutes of use so far.

Getting Started with the iPhone 6 Plus

The iPhone 6 Plus comes in three storage levels and costs $100 more than the smaller iPhone 6 at each level.

  • 16GB for $299 (most should avoid this phone)
  • 64GB for $399 (as seen here)
  • $128GB for $499

Prices above are subsidized prices on all the major carriers. Buyers can pay the full price so they don’t have to worry about a 2-year contract or they can pay the taxes on the full price as a down payment and then pay a monthly fee with AT&T or Verizon. It’s like buying the phone on credit for 12, 18 or 24 months, depending on the carrier and the plan. Buying the phone off-contract will cost much more. The 16GB model costs $749. Add $100 for each step up in storage. Take $100 off for the smaller iPhone 6, which starts at $649 for the 16GB and increases by $100 for each level.

iphone 6 color options

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus come in three colors.

  • Gold – as seen here
  • Space Grey
  • Silver

Apple still sells the old iPhone 5s with either 16 or 32GB of storage in the same colors for $99 or $199 on contract, or $549 or $599 off contract. Budget buyers can get the iPhone 5c still for free on contract or $450 off contract, but we don’t recommend it.
