Why You Shouldn’t Buy the 16GB iPhone 6

Published

on

Apple’s new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are now on sale to the general public. And while many consumers have already picked up their new iPhone, others are still trying to make a decision about which iPhone to buy. While we can’t make your decision for you, we can offer some advice, and here we take a look at the one iPhone 6 model you probably want to avoid.

Last week, Apple took the stage and announced its brand new iPhone. The company’s brand new smartphone is dubbed iPhone 6 though it will be coming in two very different versions: The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. As we now know, the two will take over the flagship role from last year’s iPhone 5s and push the iPhone 5c down to Apple’s free on-contract slot.

It's easier to find an iPhone 6 in stock now.

Apple’s two new iPhones both come with sleek and slim metal designs, A8 processor, upgraded cameras including Optical Image Stabilization on the iPhone 6 Plus, tons of storage options, Retina HD displays, a number of different price points, major U.S. carrier options, and Apple’s new iOS 8 operating system. They have instantly become best sellers with Apple claiming a record number of pre-orders.

On Friday, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus went on sale for the first time. They also landed on doorsteps across the United States and in regions around the world. And while millions of consumers have already placed their order, millions of others are still trying to decide which iPhone to buy. We offered a number of tips in the build up to the iPhone 6 release and today, we want to offer some more advice to those that are straddling the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus fence.

There is one iPhone 6 in particular that we think consumers should avoid. The 16GB iPhone 6 (and iPhone 6 Plus) is the cheapest iPhone model but if you can help it, there are some reasons to buy another version of the iPhone 6.

You Will Run Out of Space

Two years ago, I spent the extra $100 and bought the 32GB iPhone 5. It turned out to be a very wise decision. Over the past two years, I’ve slowly filled up my iPhone with applications and other files like photos, messages, and more. With 32GB of space, I’ve never had to worry about storage problems though as I found out on Wednesday, I’m walking a thin line.

I have about 1GB of free space on my iPhone 5. That’s it. Most of that space is occupied by applications, songs that I’ve saved locally for use when I don’t have a data connection during travel, messages, photos, and videos that I’ve taken over the past two years. I did not know how close I was to my limit until I tried to install iOS 8 a few days ago.

iphone 6 plus

The point I’m trying to make here is two-fold. One, the larger 32GB model gave me peace of mind over the past two years. I never had to deal with storage issues or the hassle of deleting stuff or paying for iCloud and I also found out how easy it really is to fill up space on my primary smartphone. I don’t know how long I’ve been teetering on the edge but I am willing to bet that it’s months not days.

I cannot even imagine having 16GB of storage on my iPhone 5 let alone an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus, both of which take high-resolution photos, offer beautiful looking apps and games, and more. Like many of you, I want to use my new iPhone 6 the same as before and if I did that, I’d probably fill up a 16GB model in a few days or less. I say this from experience.

I own a 16GB iPad Air. I regret not paying the extra $100 for the 32GB model as I’ve filled it up to the brink and now find myself deleting apps to make space for other apps  Many of my friends are in the same boat with the 16GB iPhone and they’ve made it known to me in a series of complaints over the past two years. Many of them have vowed to buy the 64GB iPhone 6.

64GB iPhone 6

So if you have the extra $100 sitting around, you would be wise to invest in the 64GB version of the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus especially the iPhone 6 Plus. This is a device that’s built for things like gaming and games take up a ton of free space.

I honestly don’t understand why Apple kept the 16GB iPhone around. The base model really should have been 32GB of storage with 64GB and 128GB options rounding out the lineup. Apple did do one thing right. It positioned the 64GB iPhone in the same spot as the now extinct 32GB iPhone. To me, that’s a steal and reason why I bought the 64GB iPhone 6 last week when it went on sale.

Samsung-Galaxy-S5-vs-iPhone-5s-Hero-620x334

If money is an issue and for many of you, it will be, I suggest taking a long hard look at the 32GB iPhone 5s. The iPhone 5s is still a very solid smartphone and now that Apple’s dropped the price down to $99 and $149, it’s going to be a great fit for those of you that really do want the extra storage but can’t afford to shell out $299.99 for the 64GB iPhone 6 or $399.99 for the 64GB iPhone 6 Plus.

Even if you don’t plan to use a ton of applications, shoot a ton of photos, or download a bunch of music, I personally guarantee that that 16GB of internal storage on the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 is going to fill up a whole lot faster than you think. So if you have a little extra money to spend right now or even if you have to wait a few months to get that extra money, I think you’re going to be better off skipping 16GB model and going for the 64GB. For most people 128GB is going to be way too much.

Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are now on sale in the United States and both will hit smaller, regional U.S. carriers on September 26th.

You can find here the completest list of prepaid plan providers from all the US. https://www.allprepaidplans.com/ has a list of more than 50 providers besides the four big networks. For many people this was great help. Hope it would also help you! Especially in the case you have a contract and want to end it.

They are all massively overpriced! Why on earth is it another 100$ for an additional 16Gb of space. In fact they never have the amount of space they say, as a 16gb has only around 13 and a 32 has less than 30! Rip off!

You know. If you maintain your phone and delete garbage you will never need more than 16gb. Aren’t you supposed to help people make economical decisions too. First the site posts an article saying why you shouldn’t protect your phone with a case and now this. Do you even know what you are talking about. This seems more like a site that wants to brag to their neighbor that they have a smart phone, like that’s an incredible thing. Start giving some good advice for a change.

I find this funny I am still using an iPhone 4 with 8gb and still can do everything I want to do on it. Overall I think this article is horrible advice. Please do try again though….

Yes very bad piece of advice. 16 GB is more than sufficient for 90% of consumers out there.

Full on agree with the author here. Can’t afford not to upgrade to 64 gigs. I’d fill up 16gb the very first day let alone two years. Quit yer whining and drop an extra benjamin. What is that like half a day’s pay for most of you??

16 GB is more than sufficient if you, like me, don’t like to play games or watch movies on that 4.7 inch screen and mostly use your phone for calls and some occasional photography or web surfing. With 16 GB, you get 13 GB free space. Now 13 GB is more than sufficient considering iPhone has a 8 MP camera (and not 16 or 20 MP camera as found on other phones) and we can always transfer photos/videos to cloud / local PC anytime. Now 2 GB or say 3 GB is more than sufficient for 50 odd albums unless the craziness in you wants you to transfer all the 1000 albums in your PC to your phone. So save those $100 bucks and get a 16 GB because in next 9 months time, you will have another iPhone (7) waiting to tempt you.

Im in Australia. I just upgrade from 64gb iphone6 to 128 iphone6 which cost $1129 Australian dollars
First thing I do after I open the box is turn the phone on to check the storage its says I use 4.6 gb already and 109gb available so we not really getting what we pay for. 128gb on iphone6 mean you only get 109gb what a rip off..

How do you run out of room on a phone with cloud storage?

I’m using a 16GB Nexus 5, and still have 10GB free… 9GB was the lowest when I let my Play Music cache fill up to 3GB.

iPhone users have no sense of storage or how to use it. Move your pictures off the phone. You don’t need to keep that bachelorette party pictures of the bride puking at the back of the party bus from 3 years ago. Put it on your computer or in cloud.

Hi I’m a computer tech guy and the hard drive issue comes up time and time again. Hard drive manufacturers whether they be hard drives, solid States or phone chips work on 1000MB is 1Gb whilst Microsoft and Apple work on 1024MB is 1Gb. This 24MB adds up fast so that 250Gb hard drive is only 233Gb once formatted under operating system format. Then the operating system takes up space itself plus space will be allocated for caching purposes. Download a system app that tells you what’s using your hard drive and then there’s the memory too. 512 MB and 1Gb is quite low by today’s standards and causes the cpu to cache like made on the caching space of the hard drive causing slow down to the performance of the device hence why iOS 8 will cause havoc on the older models.

Is 16Gb enough no not anymore. That why Apple should have kept the 32Gb models and done away with the 16Gb versions. If I was making a recommendation to anyone get a 32gb 5s and wait for the 6s when the 32Gb will be back. iOS 8 updates want 4.6Gb when updating by wifi and 3.3Gb when using iTunes.

The one way around the 16Gb problem is to enable iCloud and open a one drive free 30gb with Microsoft and storage problems should be solved.

Most of you people are jokers … Cloud storage lol. Where do you people come from with your stupid suggestions? 16gb is not enough. Stop pretending to be experts just because you own a phone. Having a car does not automatically qualify me to give advice like a mechanic.

I used the 8 gb iPhone 4 for 2 years. I managed. I’ve had the 16 gb iPhone 5 for 16 months, and have 4 gb available. I have 140 apps. Use Box, Dropbox and OneDrive for photos. And not much music. Music is what kills most people. Is it really necessary to keep 30 gb of songs on an iPhone? 16 gb is manageable. I also keep messages deleted. I do screenshot a few and store them in Box.

This is decent advice. It’s not the best. 16gb isn’t for everyone I agree with you on that. But it does work for most buyers. I bought a 16gb iPhone and I’ve downloaded the apps and games I wanted. Music I wanted. I’ve even jail broken my device to mess around with it and still had over 5gb free of space.

The 16gb iPhone 6 plus was a big old joke for my wife and myself. She got 16gb I 6 plus after fighting with her 8gb 3GS for memory for over three year with the thought that she was able to make do with that for so long so she would be ok with this one right. WRONG. After only just 5 days of having the 16gb I 6 plus, I checked her phone and found out that she had only about 4gb of memory left and that was an eye opener for use. We returned the phone back to the store and had to pay a $35 (screw you restocking fee), but well worth it not to have to play the rob Petter to pay Paul game pertaining to memory storage. I thought I was going smart with my iphone from the beginning by getting the 64gb right off the bat but with her scare I jumped up to the 128gb. We are going to get my daughter one and it’s not going to be 16gb either so look out 64gb here we come again.

I’ve actually stopped when you said get a 32GB 5S instead of a 16Gb 6. I personally have a 16GB iPhone 6 and a 64GB iPad air 2. My iPhone 6 is 3 months old and I still didn’t fill it up yet. I have my essential apps, my photos, videos, some music, and got 4GB free which is more than enough, and when it isn’t, I’m gonna transfer my photos and videos to my friggin Mac because you have to be a total idiot to fill the darn thing up to 64GB, then smash your phone and loose all your photos. So for me, the 64GB option on an iPhone shows that you are just a careless, lazy and kind of stupid person. One for paying extra for that space, and 2, using it instead of backing up to your PC/Mac, which a normal person does anyway.

I bought a 16gb iPhone 6 last week. Great phone, but I filled it up within 6 days of use. Exchanged it for a 64 GB iPhone 6.

16GB is not enough for me. For some people it works, but for others if you want extra storage why not get it if you can? And for those who suggest “put everything in the cloud” or “streaming” not everyone has unlimited data for streaming music/movies or access to wifi all day long. Not to mention app data that increases over time. I have no problem having extra storage on my phone and being able to keep all my stuff. Besides what’s the point of getting a bigger display if you can’t watch movies or play games on it?

For some 16GB is fine, but for others we need more. I backup my phone regularly, but I am a heavy user and prefer to have more storage onboard my phone. My previous phone (HTC One M8) came with 32GB storage and a SD card slot which I put a 64GB SD. Say what you will, but having a ton of memory means you don’t have to worry about constantly deleting apps and other information. Especially when it comes time to download an OS update which you need space for as well.

I even suggested to one of my friends who got his iPhone 6+ a month ago to grab the 64GB version. He thanked me for it after 2 weeks because he can watch all of his movies, play all of his games, and has all of his music – and enjoys everything on a much bigger screen! I should’ve taken my own advice when I got my 16GB iPhone 6 lol

If you don’t “manage” it. It will fill up anyway..whether you have 16 GB or 128 GB. only difference is…just take longer time to fill up.

The people who say you will never need more than 16gb, they are all old. 16gb is fine to a old person because they never use their phone. But to people 40 and below, its way to small of a space seeing it only lets you use 11gb!
