Galaxy Note 4 vs Note Edge: 5 Things Buyers Need to Know Now

Published

on

With the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 release date confirmed and the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge release date heating up, we want to take a look at the five most important things buyers must know about the Galaxy Note 4 vs. Galaxy Note Edge, a match up that has been brewing in the minds of consumers for several weeks now.

Several weeks ago, Samsung took to the stage in Berlin, Germany and announced a number of new products including two new flagship Galaxy Note models dubbed Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Samsung Galaxy Note Edge. The two devices are similar in many ways though there are some key differences that consumers should now be aware of.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 is an impressive smartphone and it comes loaded with high-powered specs including its 5.7-inch Quad HD display, its brand new 16MP camera with Optical Image Stabilization, its new S Pen, its Android 4.4.4 KitKat software that’s backed by TouchWiz, its new design that comes with both plastic and metal materials, and a whole lot more.

The Galaxy Note Edge is also a powerhouse. It features a Quad HD resolution, a 2.7 GHz Quad-core Snapdragon 805 with 3GB of RAM, Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Samsung TouchWiz, 16MP camera with Optical Image Stabilization, massive battery, and a thin 8.3mm frame. It also comes with an S Pen stylus though the display, seen in the video below, should be its biggest draw.

Those looking to pick up a new smartphone, particularly one with a massive screen, are likely weighing the Galaxy Note 4 vs. Galaxy Note Edge in the lead up to their release dates later on this year.

With a Galaxy Note 4 release date now confirmed for October and a Galaxy Note Edge release date still in the cards for 2014, we want to take a look at the five most important things buyers need to know about the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge. This comparison will look at both key similarities and differences between the two new Galaxy Notes.

Galaxy Note 4 Specs vs. Galaxy Note Edge Specs

If you’ve been following along at all, you’d know that the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge are in possession of similar hardware and software specifications. And while the devices aren’t out just yet, early benchmarks indicate that these devices will offer a similar amount of firepower to those that pick them up later on this year.

Korean AnTuTu benchmarks for both the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge show only a time gap in performance between these two devices. While the benchmarks aren’t final, they show a bit of an edge for the Galaxy Note 4. What’s extremely interesting is that the Galaxy Note 4 is running a Snapdragon 805 while the Galaxy Note Edge is touting a Exynos 5433.

What this means is that no matter what you end up buying, you should walk away with an extremely powerful device that’s capable of delivering fantastic multitasking and beautiful gaming. Power and performance are hallmarks of the Galaxy Note series and it looks like these devices will continue to carry that flag into battle later on this year.

It also means that the biggest difference between the two will be the curved screen on the Galaxy Note Edge.

Galaxy Note 4 Release vs. Galaxy Note Edge Release

All along, the Galaxy Note Edge been touted as a high-end device aimed at the high-end market. Samsung made this explicitly clear in several controlled leaks including one from Bloomberg earlier this year.

We are targeting consumers who want more professional use and tend to be willing to pay more for handsets.

In September, a Samsung executive said that the Galaxy Note Edge would be a “limited edition concept.” In other words, it’s not expected to be a mass produced device like the Galaxy Note 4. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 is expected to hit 140 countries by the end of October. It’s going to be a mass produced, widespread device.

Samsung recently said that “the Galaxy Note Edge will be released in selected markets” which points to a very controlled release in a limited amount of markets around the world. So far, only a few regions have been confirmed. The device will be heading to the United States, Korea, the United Kingdom, and Canada. As we’ve pointed out, these are all high-end markets and key battlegrounds.

So, what this means is that consumers in emerging markets and unimportant markets should be bracing for the worst. While you will probably see the Galaxy Note 4, there’s a good chance that you won’t see the Galaxy Note Edge, something that could force you to buy it off-contract through a retailer outside of your region. Don’t expect that to be cheap, though.

Galaxy Note 4 Release Date vs. Galaxy Note Edge Release Date

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 release date is set for October for a number of different locales including the UK (October 10th) and the United States (October 17th). Most countries will get it by the end of October as Samsung looks to compete with the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and other top Android smartphones. It also wants to get it out ahead of Black Friday and the holidays.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note Edge release date is still unconfirmed. In other words, the Galaxy Note 4 release date should beat it in most regions. A Samsung official recently stated that the Galaxy Note Edge release could take place in late October though that window might be limited to Korea. Whether that holds up or not remains to be seen.

U.S. carriers appear to be committed to a release in 2014 while other regions might encounter delays. The UK is still without a release date and retailer Clove is convinced that there will be a delay in Europe. Things are worse in Canada where the Galaxy Note Edge release date won’t arrive until 2015, long after the Galaxy Note 4 release date.

Those living outside the U.S. and Korea should prepare for a bit of a wait when it comes to the Galaxy Note Edge release date. We should see more movement from those two release dates in October though.

Galaxy Note 4 Pre-Orders vs. Galaxy Note Edge Pre-Orders

Galaxy Note 4 pre-orders are live around the world including the United States and the UK. In fact, we’ve seen new Galaxy Note 4 pre-order details emerge as top retailer Best Buy has started taking pre-orders for select models. Those pre-orders join early orders being taken at AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless.

The Galaxy Note Edge is also up for pre-order though early orders are far more limited. German retailers are taking early orders and so is Clove UK but beyond those pre-orders, we haven’t seen much. While the Galaxy Note 4 pre-orders are solid, we recommend avoiding Galaxy Note Edge pre-orders until Samsung and its partners announce specific pricing and release date details.

Galaxy Note Edge Price vs. Galaxy Note 4 Price

It’s clear, at least to us, that the Galaxy Note Edge price will be more expensive than the Galaxy Note 4. We just went into great detail about the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge price and we’ve determined that there’s a very good chance the Galaxy Note Edge will be priced at a very expensive price point. Everything is pointing in that direction and buyers are going to want to prepare for the worst.

Galaxy Note 4 Features - Sensors

We still haven’t established exactly how much it’s going to cost in the United States though with the Galaxy Note 4 priced at $299.99 on-contract and between $700 and $850 off-c0ntract, we should see the Galaxy Note Edge become one of the most expensive flagship smartphones money can buy.

Neither device is cheap but the Galaxy Note Edge and its screen technology could force some buyers to the Galaxy Note 4 or a phone like the iPhone 6 Plus.

AT&T will be releasing the Edge on Nov 18th. I was able to check one out in store yesterday and I must admit it is a VERY nice AND cool looking device. It goes for $100 more than the Note 4. Not sure if it’s worth that much more but it definitely has me thinking about it. It’s pretty slick. I do think that everyone will need to put it in their hands as some may not like the whole screen on the side thing, especially left handers supposedly. I found that less of an issue than I thought it would be. I have no idea how much of an advantage it will be having the edge screen but it gets 10’s for cool factor. SO much better than the blah blah iPhone 6.
