iOS 8.0.2 Problems, Impressions & Performance

Published

on

A week ago, Apple pushed out its third iOS 8 update, an updated dubbed iOS 8.0.2. With the dust around the iOS 8.0.2 release now settling, we want to take a look at the most important things iPhone and iPad owners need to know, right now, about Apple’s latest update for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Days ago, after a lengthy stint in testing, Apple released the iOS 8 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. As expected, the iOS 8 update delivered a number of big time changes including improvements to the Photos app, iMessage, battery usage, accessibility, and more. While iOS 8 isn’t the massive overhaul that was iOS 7, it’s an important upgrade to the iOS operating system.

While the iOS 8 update delivered a number of new features to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users, it also delivered a number of iOS 8 problems. We detailed many of these problems in the hours and days after the iOS 8 release date and these issues ultimately forced Apple to release an iOS 8.0.1 update to squash them.

The first update was iOS 8.0.1, an update that rolled out on last Wednesday and one that immediately caused problems for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users. Cellular connectivity died and Touch ID stopped working for thousands of users around the world. Apple claims that about 40,000 people were affected before it pulled the plug on the update about an hour after its arrival.

Just 24 hours later, Apple made good on its promise to fix those issues. Late Thursday, Apple pushed out iOS 8.0.2, an update similar to iOS 8.0.1 but one that came with fixes for those iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus problems. And despite the arrival of Apple’s iOS 8.1 beta, iOS 8.0.2 remains the current iOS 8 update for iPhone and iPad users.

Now that iOS 8.0.2 has been out for a few days, we want to take a look at the most important things iPhone, iPad and iPod users need to know about their latest iOS 8 update. Here, we take a look at lingering iOS 8.0.2 problems, relay our early iOS 8.0.2 reviews, and take a look at what could be next for iPhone and iPad users running iOS 8.0.2 and below.

iOS 8.0.2 Problems

Like the iOS 8 and iOS 8.0.1 updates before it, iOS 8.0.2 arrived with a change log full of bug fixes. For those that need a refresher course, here’s what the iOS 8.0.2 delivered to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users:

  • Fixes an issue in iOS 8.0.1 that impacted cellular network connectivity and Touch ID on iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
  • Fixes a bug so HealthKit apps can now be made available on the App Store
  • Addresses an issue where 3rd party keyboards could become deselected when a user enters their passcode
  • Fixes an issue that prevented some apps from accessing photos from the Photo Library
  • Improves the reliability of the Reachability feature on iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
  • Fixes an issue that could cause unexpected cellular data usage when receiving SMS/MMS messages
  • Better support of Ask To Buy for Family Sharing for In-App Purchases
  • Fixes an issue where ringtones were sometimes not restored from iCloud backups
  • Fixes a bug that prevented uploading photos and videos from Safari

iOS 8.0.2 is chock full of bug fixes though as we’ve learned over the past few days, it also delivered some iOS 8 problems of its own.

iPhone and iPad users that have updated to iOS 8.0.2 are complaining about an assortment of issues including bad iOS 8.0.2 battery life, iMessage and FaceTime issues, problems with Mail, cellular issues, various network problems, battery drain, AirPrint issues, iCloud Drive documents problems related to Reset All Settings, the usual array of Bluetooth problems, a number of issues with the iPhone 4s including connectivity problems, iOS 8.0.2 problems on the iPhone 6, and many, many more.

Not everyone is experiencing iOS 8.0.2 problems though.

iOS 8.0.2 Reviews (Early)

We’ve been taking a deep dive into the iOS 8.0.2 update over the past few days, all in an effort to supply feedback to iPhone and iPad users struggling with the decision to upgrade or not.

Find Lost iPhone Dead Battery 2

iOS 8.0.2 performance on the iPhone 6 has been extremely solid with battery life, connectivity and overall speed playing a big role in the update’s success. We’ve found that iOS 8.0.2 for the iPhone 6 Plus offers great overall performance as well though we’ve been dealing with random freezes and issues with landscape mode. The good does outweigh the bad though.

Apple’s new update is performing extremely well on the iPhone 5, at least on ours. We’ve heard from a number of iPhone 5 users who have run into issues with iOS 8.0.2 but the overall experience on our iPhone 5 remains unchanged. We’re still seeing great battery life, connectivity, speed, and app stability on the new software.

The iOS 8.0.2 update for the iPad mini with Retina Display and the iPad Air is also working out quite nicely. Performance is on par with the iOS 7.1 and iOS 8.0 and we haven’t noticed anything big time issues on board either device.

So while we’ve heard a ton about iOS 8 problems and issues, iOS 8.0.2 is actually performing quite well on our iPhones and iPads. That said, we still want to help solve some of the key issues that have emerged with the iOS 8.0.2 update.

iOS 8.0.2 Fixes

iPhone and iPad users always complain about battery drain after iOS updates and iOS 8.0.2 is no different. Fortunately, there are some things that iPhone and iPad owners can try in an effort to dislodge these issues.

Those of you that are dealing with bad iOS 8.0.2 battery life will want to take a look at our list of iOS 8 battery life fixes. These fixes are not guaranteed to work though many of them have worked in the past. They’re worth a shot if you’re dealing with abnormal battery drain after making the switch to iOS 8.0 or iOS 8.0.2.

We’ve also been getting a ton of complaints about broken Wi-Fi inside iOS 8.0.2. Wi-Fi issues have plagued iPhone and iPad users for quite some time though we really started to see things hit the fan after the iOS 6 update. Grayed out Wi-Fi, slow connections or non-existent connections seem to be among the biggest problems.

Most users can install iOS 8.0.2 without worrying.

There isn’t a cure all but there are some things that you can try. These have worked for some iPhone and iPad users in the past but again, like all temporary fixes, they’re not guaranteed to work for your device. We also recommend perusing the Apple discussion forums for other temporary Wi-Fi fixes, there are a ton out there.

iOS 8.1

Earlier this week, Apple pushed out its first iOS 8.1 beta update to developers. iOS 8.1 beta 1 is currently available for the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple TV though only those with a developer account can download and install it. Apple has not tagged the iOS 8.1 update with a release date though the beta process typically takes months not weeks.

iPhone 6 Plus

What is clear though, from reading the change log, is that iOS 8.1 is chock full of bug fixes for iOS 8 problems. While iOS 8.1 may not fix every single iOS 8.0.2 issue, it could very well fix some of the bigger issues frustrating iPhone and iPad users. It’s an update that iOS 8.0.2 users can look forward to though there is no guarantee that it’ll be Apple’s next iOS update.

We know that Apple’s planning to release an update in October to deliver SMS Continuity to iPhone users but it’s not clear if that feature will be baked into iOS 8.1 or an iOS 8.0.3 update. With an Apple event rumored for October, we should know what’s what in the next few weeks.

Yes, it slowed my IPAD down. Web pages take 10 seconds or more to open, if they open. It doubled up my photos in some albums and loaded my opening screen into my photos file. Facebook is really slow to open.

Same problems as the others have commented. My ipad2 is so much slower than before, some programs will not perform as before, and to show how thoughtful Apple is, apparently we can’t undo this latest “fix”

Apple has screwed up big time. They charge a lot for their devices, but then they don’t test their updates properly. My iPad is not working properly. Why are we paying these jokers so much money?

ios8 has ruined my 5s experience. 8.0.0 was buggy and I was lucky to miss 8.0.1 but 8.0.2 is worse than my initial 8 upgrade.

Wifi is intermittent and will fight my mobile data unless I turn it off while I’m around a wifi network. And even then seems to still grind and do nothing. Keep having to engage and disengage aeroplane mode to get by… I missed downgrading to 7 again by a day when Apple unsigned it :(

ipad 3 here. Like Karel said nothing wants to open anymore. Why pay big money for below average reliability. The quality died with Jobs. That line should go viral. The quality died with Jobs.
