New Samsung Galaxy Android 4.4 Update Details Confirmed

New Samsung Galaxy Android 4.4 KitKat update details have been confirmed today and it appears that at some Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 users will be getting Android 4.4.2 KitKat instead of a bump up to Android 4.4.2 KitKat when their KitKat updates finally arrive.

For several weeks now, Samsung has been delivering Android 4.4.4 KitKat updates to select devices in the United States and abroad. We’ve seen the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4.4 KitKat update start to push out. We’ve seen the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.4 KitKat update roll out. We’ve seen the Android 4.4.4 KitKat update for the Samsung Galaxy S5 make significant progress. We’ve even seen a Galaxy S3 Android 4.4.4 KitKat roll out begin.

Some of these devices moved from Android 4.3 Jelly Bean straight to Android 4.4.4 KitKat. Some moved from Samsung’s Android 4.4.2 KitKat software that’s been rolling out since January. And while Android 4.4.4 KitKat appears to be the logical step for those still on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, it seems some Galaxy users will move from Android 4.3 Jelly Bean to Samsung’s older Android 4.4.2 KitKat update.

Vodafone Australia today released a new Android update schedule that outlines its Android 4.4 KitKat update plans for various Samsung smartphones and tablets. Australian carriers are very forthcoming about Android update information and we pass along their information in an effort to paint a broad picture for Samsung Galaxy device owners around the world.

Typically, Aussie carriers are on the back end when it comes to release timing, something to keep in mind as we discuss these brand new Android 4.4 KitKat update details.

Initially, the carrier was mum about the version of KitKat it would be rolling out to its Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 variants. Today’s update seems to confirm a move from Android 4.3 Jelly Bean to Android 4.4.2 KitKat. It’s not too surprising given that Android 4.4.2 KitKat is still pushing out to the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 2 but it’s obviously going to be disappointing if these Android 4.4.2 KitKat updates fail to deliver the bug fixes found in Android 4.4.4 KitKat.

The carrier notes that both Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.2 KitKat updates are now in testing though it doesn’t provide any kind of ETA when it comes to their release. Testing is unpredictable and can often take several weeks.

It’s important to note that the Galaxy S4 mini Android 4.4.2 KitKat update will be coming with an Open SSL fix, a fix that was delivered by Android 4.4.4 KitKat back in June. So, it’s possible that these Android 4.4.2 KitKat updates will come with key bug fixes.

The Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4.2 KitKat updates are still not in testing and it’s not clear when they will roll out. This is the first time that we’ve seen the exact version of KitKat confirmed for these two devices. Vodafone is one of the few carriers that has confirmed an Android 4.4 KitKat update for the Galaxy S3.

What this means for Aussie carriers like Telstra and Optus is unclear but it’s clear that progress is being made behind the scenes in the build up to the Android L release later on this year.

A rumor from SamMobile puts Samsung’s first Android L updates in November or December. This is exciting because it’s the first we’ve heard of Samsung’s Android L update release plans. The company, to this day, remains silent about what it has in store for Galaxy users in the future.

The first two Android L updates are rumored to be for the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy S5 though we expect a number of Android L updates to eventually roll out to older devices. Here’s a list of devices we expect will get Android L:
