Galaxy Note 4 vs. Note Edge Release Date Breakdown

Published

on

Last month, Samsung announced two brand new flagship smartphones dubbed Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Samsung Galaxy Note Edge. At its event, Samsung failed to announce specific release details for either device. A month later, we now have a pretty firm grasp on the Galaxy Note 4 vs. Galaxy Note Edge release dates and today, we want to take a look at the firm details and the key differences thus far.

At Unpacked 2014 Episode 2, Samsung announced several new devices including its Gear VR accessory for the Galaxy Note 4, its new Gear S smartwatch and two new Galaxy Note models. The Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge were the two highlights of the show and they’re heading to shelves to battle the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus this fall.

The two new Galaxy Notes will be paired together to battle the iPhone 6, LG G3, and Samsung Galaxy S5. They’ll also be rivals to each other. We’ve heard from a number of people that are interested in buying one or the other. This doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Both devices come with an array of impressive hardware and software features.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note Edge is a concept phone and one that should be intriguing to those that are looking to upgrade to a high-end smartphone. The new Galaxy Note Edge features a Quad HD resolution, a 2.7 GHz Quad-core Snapdragon 805 with 3GB of RAM, Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Samsung TouchWiz, 16MP camera with Optical Image Stabilization, massive battery, and a thin 8.3mm frame. It also comes with an S Pen stylus and a display unlike any other.

The Galaxy Note 4 is also a high octane smartphone and comes loaded with high-powered specs including a 5.7-inch Quad HD display, a brand new 16MP camera with Optical Image Stabilization, a new S Pen stylus, Android 4.4.4 KitKat software that’s backed by TouchWiz, a brand new design that comes with both plastic and metal materials, and more.

In September, Samsung failed to confirm key release details. Over the past four weeks, we’ve finally been able to patch together most of the important pieces and here, we want to take a look at everything we know so far about the Galaxy Note 4 release date vs. Galaxy Note Edge release date. These aren’t opinions, these are the concrete details that we have right now.

October vs. October

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 release date is now confirmed for various dates in October. And while the Galaxy Note Edge release date isn’t set it stone, it now looks like the device might arrive amidst Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 release, at least in some regions.

A great majority of consumers will get the Galaxy Note 4 in mid-to-late October with a few stragglers getting it in November. Samsung plans to get it out to 140 countries by the end of the month and it now looks like some consumers will be able to weigh Galaxy Note 4 vs. Galaxy Note Edge, in a physical sense, sometime in the next few weeks.

Samsung still hasn’t made a big production about it but we’ve seen other companies offer very specific details about Samsung’s higher end Galaxy Note. Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s biggest service provider, recently confirmed plans to get one Galaxy Note Edge model out in late October with the other color, white, coming in November.

This information was recently confirmed by Blog of Mobile who claims that the U.S., China, Korea, and Japan will all play part of the initial Galaxy Note Edge release dates. All four are key Samsung battlegrounds and all four will have the Galaxy Note 4 on shelves in the coming weeks.

Samsung has also said that its targeting a late October Galaxy Note Edge release date in Korea though it still hasn’t outlined a specific date. We still don’t know when Samsung plans to release the Galaxy Note Edge for the Chinese market though we recently saw China-bound Galaxy Note Edge models recently pass through necessary certifications.

While some release dates will land in close proximity of one another, others will not.

Canada, UK & Europe

Most places in Europe, including the UK, will get the Galaxy Note 4 the week of October 10th. Canada will be getting the Galaxy Note 4 on October 17th. However, these regions will not be getting the Galaxy Note Edge any time soon, something that’s immensely frustrating to those interested in comparing the two devices.

Samsung Canada recently confirmed a 2015 release date for the Galaxy Note Edge. It did not provide any specifics and simply said that the region would be behind the U.S. release date for unspecified reasons. Samsung UK has stated that it will confirm Galaxy Note Edge release info in due time though information from retailer Clove UK indicates that consumers might have a bit of a wait ahead of them.

Galaxy Note 4

Clove says that the Galaxy Note Edge will not be available in the UK and other European countries at launch. It’s not clear how long the delay might last though the retailer has shown quite a bit of concern. Instead of waiting, the retailer has decided to source devices from other parts of the world in an effort to sell it on time to its customers.

Whilst we await official confirmation from Samsung, we have heard from distribution channels that the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge will not be available in the UK at launch.

When the Note Edge launches, there will not be UK stock available. It will not be available in the majority of European countries.

The Galaxy Note 4 looks like it will have an edge in these regions so consumers will need to start weighing their options as we head towards these upcoming Galaxy Note 4 release dates.

Galaxy Note 4 vs. Galaxy Note Edge Release (U.S.)

U.S. based carriers were among the first to confirm the Galaxy Note 4. There were also among the first to confirm the Galaxy Note Edge. Samsung Canada says that the U.S. will release before it and new information suggests that the Galaxy Note Edge release in the U.S. will be among the first. This lines up with what carriers are saying though it’s clear the Galaxy Note 4 will be out first.

AT&T Galaxy Note 4 vs. Galaxy Note Edge

AT&T is currently taking pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 4 and it’s taking pre-orders for the 32GB model in black or white. Still no word on the gold or pink models that Samsung announced on stage.

The carrier is offering the Galaxy Note 4 at several different price points including a $299.99 on-contract and $826 Galaxy Note 4 off-contract. That off-contract price is the most expensive amongst U.S. carriers.

Note-4-Design

It’s not clear how the AT&T Galaxy Note Edge will match up. AT&T’s splash page for the Galaxy Note Edge still says that the device is “Coming Soon” but that could mean anything. We still haven’t seen the Galaxy Note Edge pass through the FCC, a necessary certification ahead of release, so it looks like the Galaxy Note 4 will beat it to the punch.

As for the price, if its Galaxy Note 4 off-contract price ($826) is any indication, we could be looking at a steep price point for the Galaxy Note Edge. Galaxy Note Edge price details have pointed to an expensive device, though, those details pertain to devices sold outside the United States.

Sprint Galaxy Note 4 vs. Galaxy Note Edge

Sprint’s Galaxy Note 4 is also up for pre-order and it’s available in 32GB in both black and white. Sprint’s offering the Galaxy Note 4 for $299.99 on-contract or $0 down through its Easy Pay plan. Amazon is offering the Sprint Galaxy Note 4 off-contract for $720.

Besides its Galaxy Note Edge announcement on September 3rd, Sprint has yet to say anything about its Galaxy Note Edge plans. The device is confirmed for its 4G LTE network but other than that, customers are still in the dark.

Sprint’s Galaxy Note Edge hasn’t passed through the FCC which means that the Galaxy Note 4 release date should beat it convincingly. Those interested in both will simply have to wait for the Now Network to deliver its details.

T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 vs. Galaxy Note Edge

T-Mobile is offering the Galaxy Note 4 on pre-order ahead of its release date. T-Mobile’s also offering the 32GB model in both black and white though as we’ve noted many times in the past, its pricing is different.

The carrier no longer offers contracts for its smartphones so consumers must buy the Galaxy Note 4 unsubsidized. T-Mobile is also charging $0 up front with a full retail price of $749. The carrier will charge $31 per month for 24 months though if you cancel service, the remaining balance on phone becomes due.

Galaxy-Note-Edge

Unlike AT&T and Sprint, T-Mobile’s confirmed the Galaxy Note Edge release for the fall. T-Mobile’s sign up page still boasts of a fall 2014 release for the Galaxy Note Edge so it looks like T-Mobile is expecting it to arrive by early December.

The T-Mobile Galaxy Note Edge has yet to pass through the FCC so its release is likely off the Galaxy Note 4’s pace as well.

U.S. Cellular Galaxy Note 4 vs. Galaxy Note Edge

The U.S. Cellular Galaxy Note 4 release date is on October 17th though pre-orders and price are still missing. Samsung claims that U.S. Cellular might only have the black Galaxy Note 4 in stock at launch though that hasn’t been confirmed. With a release date less than two weeks away, it’s not clear when the carrier might reveal its pertinent details.

U.S. Cellular customers may not even be able to weigh the two next to each other. U.S. Cellular didn’t announce the Galaxy Note Edge in September and it still hasn’t confirmed any plans for Samsung’s other Galaxy Note. U.S. Cellular’s been known to release phones late, the LG G3 is an example of this, but nothing is certain at this point.

Verizon Galaxy Note 4 vs. Galaxy Note Edge

Verizon’s Galaxy Note 4 is also up for pre-order and it will also be coming in 32GB form with black and white options at the start. Both models will start shipping by October 23rd.

The carrier is offering it with three different price points including $299.99 on-contract, $35 Galaxy Note 4 with Verizon Edge, and a $699 Galaxy Note 4 off-contract price. Verizon’s off-contract price is the cheapest of the bunch. It’s not clear if it will do something similar with the Galaxy Note Edge because we still don’t have official details.

Galaxy-Note-Edge-1

Verizon also has a Galaxy Note Edge sign up page and not only does it say that the device is “Coming Soon,” it also says that those signing up through its sign up page will “be the first to get product, pre-order and launch details.” In other words, it appears that pre-orders for the Galaxy Note Edge could arrive on Big Red in the future.

What’s clear though is that consumers will be faced with the Galaxy Note 4 first and the Galaxy Note Edge later. The Verizon model has yet to pass through the FCC which means that a release is still off in the distance, how far though is not clear.

I’m afraid that I can’t get excited about getting the Note Edge in October 2014 or even October 2015. I hope to get it some time between those two dates. I will survive just fine without it this month as I suspect all of the other buyers will too. I think that there is too my hype on this device as good as it will likely be
