Note 4 vs. Note Edge Release: What U.S. Buyers Can Expect

Published

on

Last month, Samsung announced two brand new flagship smartphones dubbed Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Samsung Galaxy Note Edge. A month after their announcement, we finally have a firm grasp on their upcoming release dates and today, we want to take a look at how we expect the Galaxy Note 4 release to compare to the Galaxy Note Edge release in the U.S.

At Unpacked 2014 Episode 2, Samsung announced several new devices including its Gear VR accessory for the Galaxy Note 4, its new Gear S smartwatch and two new Galaxy Note models. The two highlights of the show though were the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge, two smartphones that are heading to shelves this fall.

The two new Galaxy Notes will be paired together to battle the iPhone 6, LG G3, and Samsung Galaxy S5 this fall. They’ll also be rivals to each other. We’ve heard from a number of people that are interested in buying one or the other, something that doesn’t come as too much of a surprise given their likeness and given their stature in the Android world.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note Edge is a concept phone and one that should be intriguing to those that are looking to upgrade to a high-end smartphone. The new Galaxy Note Edge features a Quad HD resolution, a 2.7 GHz Quad-core Snapdragon 805 with 3GB of RAM, Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Samsung TouchWiz, 16MP camera with Optical Image Stabilization, massive battery, and a thin 8.3mm frame. It also comes with an S Pen stylus and a display unlike any other.

The Galaxy Note 4 is also a high octane smartphone and comes loaded with high-powered specs including a 5.7-inch Quad HD display, a brand new 16MP camera with Optical Image Stabilization, a new S Pen stylus, Android 4.4.4 KitKat software that’s backed by TouchWiz, a brand new design that comes with both plastic and metal materials, and more.

As we’ve pushed further away from their launch date, we’ve learned quite a bit, but not everything, about their respective release dates in the United States. With key details still missing for U.S. buyers, we want to take a look at what we expect from both release dates in the U.S. and offer a comparison ahead of the Galaxy Note 4 release next week and the Galaxy Note Edge release date that’s still missing in action.

Similar Releases

We fully expect the Galaxy Note Edge release in the United States to reflect the Galaxy Note 4 release. Here is what this would mean for those of you looking to compare the two or buy the Galaxy Note Edge instead of the Galaxy Note 4.

  1. U.S. Galaxy Note Edge release date, pre-orders and price announced shortly the last model clears the FCC. As of right now, AT&T and T-Mobile Galaxy Note Edge variants are the only devices that have received clearance. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 release date was announced shortly after the U.S. Cellular Galaxy Note 4 cleared the FCC. We expect these two Galaxy Note Edge models to clear the FCC next week.
  2. We expect there to be Galaxy Note Edge pre-orders ahead of the Galaxy Note Edge release date, a release that we’re expecting to happen sometime in November ahead of Black Friday.
  3. We expect the Galaxy Note Edge release dates to either fall on one date or to cluster around each other. The Galaxy Note 4 will arrive in the U.S., on all five carriers, starting October 17th.

Galaxy Note Edge Release Soon After Galaxy Note 4 Release

U.S. carriers still haven’t produced any Galaxy Note Edge release date details but again, we expect those to arrive soon. And when they do, we expect them to reveal a release date, or release dates, just a few weeks behind the Galaxy Note 4’s October 17th release in the U.S.

Galaxy Note 4

With the Galaxy Note Edge’s first release date now confirmed for October 23rd in Japan, we now know that Samsung intends to get this device out ahead of the holidays. And with the U.S. being the massive market that it is, we fully expect the company to try and get the Galaxy Note Edge out in time for Black Friday in late November. (November 29th)

In fact, the wheels are already in motion. Earlier this week, we spotted the AT&T Galaxy Note Edge, also known as the SM-N915A, crossing through the FCC on its way to shelves. While the filing didn’t confirm a release date, it’s a clear sign of the U.S. Galaxy Note Edge release date making progress behind the scenes. We also saw the T-Mobile model pass through on its way to shelves.

We’re betting on a Galaxy Note Edge release in early-to-mid November. At the very least, expect the Galaxy Note Edge, at worst, to be about a month behind the Galaxy Note 4 in the U.S.

More Limited Galaxy Note Edge Release

The Galaxy Note 4 will arrive on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon. We don’t expect it to arrive anywhere else. And while it will be limited, we expect the Galaxy Note Edge release to be even more limited.

Note-4-Design

U.S. Cellular has yet to confirm the Galaxy Note Edge and it looks like the company has no plans to carry the smartphone down the road. We would not put any money on a U.S. Cellular Galaxy Note Edge in 2014 or 2015 and we’re banking on a four-pronged release rather than the five-pronged release that we’re seeing with the Galaxy Note 4.

Galaxy Note Edge More Expensive

We still don’t know how much the Galaxy Note Edge is going to cost in the United States though we still expect it to cost more than the Galaxy Note 4. And with carriers pricing the Galaxy Note 4 at $299.99 on-contract and between $699 and $826 off-contract, we expect the Galaxy Note Edge to be one of the most expensive smartphones money can buy.

Again, for those that haven’t been following, this is a concept phone and a limited edition one at that. It’s aimed at the high-end, not the budget crowd, and therefore we expect Samsung to command a pretty hefty price point, not just in the U.S., but everywhere the Galaxy Note Edge lands. We suspect that it could be as much as $40o on-contract but that remains unconfirmed.

Galaxy-Note-4

Expect the Galaxy Note Edge price to trump the Galaxy Note 4’s in the United States, across all carriers. We think there will likely be a difference of $100 dollars or so.

Cheap Galaxy Note 4 When Galaxy Note Edge Arrives

When the Galaxy Note Edge release hits the United States, expect there to be a large gap between the two price points. By the time the Galaxy Note Edge arrives, the Galaxy Note 4 will probably have been on shelves for a few weeks. Typically, flagship Android smartphones see significant price cuts after a few weeks on shelves.

We’re not talking $100 or $200 off but we think there’s a good chance that the price could be about $50 cheaper than the current $299.99 price point. Carriers probably won’t be offering it at that price but we would not be surprised if a retailer like Amazon cut the price in and around the Galaxy Note Edge release date to make the Galaxy Note 4 even more appealing than it already is.

We expect there to be Galaxy Note Edge deals as well though nothing that can come close to the Galaxy Note 4’s lowest price. Again, there is really not going to be much incentive for Galaxy Note Edge price drops given that it’s a limited edition smartphone. Look for the Galaxy Note 4 price to be far more appetizing upon the Galaxy Note Edge’s release.

It was an upgrade use with my jump from T-Mobile. I have the older jump plan so the only thing we pay for the two motes was the taxes, 130 dollars all together.

I would not pay an extra 100$ for a crappier battery for the same phone. I would buy it only at the same price because what it would lack in battery makes up for in software.
