Nexus 6 Arrives in the Google Play Store
The Nexus 6, Google’s flagship Android device made by Motorola and meant for developers who want a pure Android experience, its now available for in the Google Play Store.
The Nexus 6 arrived in the Google Play Store just roughly two days after Google first revealed it in a post on its blog. The Nexus 6 is a gargantuan smartphone. Its 6-inch display alone makes it a tablet replacement.
To be clear, Google isn’t yet taking pre-orders for the Nexus 6 through the Google Play Store. However, this new store page does give us another look at pricing and storage capacities. Purchasing the Nexus 6 with 32GB of storage will set users back $649, just as Google announced. A Nexus 6 with 64GB of storage will cost users a whopping $699. That’s an all-time high for a Google-sanctioned Nexus device. For comparison, last year’s Nexus 5 with 16GB of costs $349.99. Color options also match those that Google shared on Wednesday. The Nexus 6 will come with either a white or dark blue back on launch day.

As GottaBeMobile reported earlier this week. The Nexus 6 is essentially a retooled Moto X 2014 with a bigger screen, more horse power and a few extras. First there’s that 6-inch AMOLED display that practically guarantees it a place in the phablet category that sits between regular sized phones and full-size tablets like Google’s own new Nexus 9.
A Snapdragon 805 processor gives users four 2.7GHz processing cores to work with. The Nexus 6 also has 3GB of RAM. That’s 1GB of RAM more than what’s available in the Moto X 2014. To power that battery and make up for the Nexus 6 not having the Moto Display technology that keeps users from having to turn on their device’s screen all the time, there’s a bigger 3220 mAh battery inside too.
When Motorola revealed the Moto X 2014, there were a few choice extras that either didn’t come included with the phone itself, or seem noticeable absent. In the notably absent category was wireless charging. The Nexus 6 does have wireless charging, like the Nexus 5 before it. With wireless charging users can skip plugging in the device with a USB cable to charge.
Both the Nexus 6 and the Moto X 2014 are compatible with Motorola’s recently announced Turbo Charger, but only the Nexus 6 includes a Turbo Charger inside the box. That’s key as a Turbo Charger costs $35.99 on its own. Motorola says the Nexus 6 will get 6 hours of battery life off a 15-minute charge.
Another key advantage in purchasing the Nexus 6 over the Moto X 2014 is its front-facing speaker. The Moto X 2014 may look like it has dual front-facing speakers, it doesn’t. Instead, on its face sits a single front-facing speaker with a microphone.
Both devices include a rear-facing 13 megapixel camera with a ring flash that helps defuse sudden lighting. In addition to the camera software being separate, the Nexus 6 has optical image stabilization. In theory, low-light picture-taking and video should be better on the Nexus 6 since optical image stabilization helps cameras compensate for hand movements.
The Nexus 6 is a bigger, more powerful Moto X 2014, but it’s missing the key ingredients that make the Moto X 2014 such a winner: software. The Nexus line is supposed to act as refuge for Android software changes made by hardware makers. Motorola only makes software changes that have a quality of life impact. For example, sensors on the front of the Moto X 2014 allow users to swipe away calls and check notifications without turning the device on. The front-facing sensors required for that are gone in the Nexus 6.

Google has yet confirmed a pre-order date for the Nexus 6. That being said, all four major carriers in the United States have confirmed that they have versions of the device on the way.
