How to Record Slow Motion Videos on the Moto X 2014

As many have already concluded ever since Motorola announced it, the Moto X 2014 is an attempt by appeal to high-end smartphone buyers by giving them the features they already know and love. One of the features that have been catching on lately is slow-motion video.

The Moto X 2014 has a pretty fast Snapdragon 801 processor with 2GB of RAM and a 5.2-inch display. Those two features alone are enough or users to safely conclude that the Moto X 2014 is capable of competing against contemporaries like the iPhone 6 and the HTC One M8. If you don’t dig through the camera settings on the Moto X 2014 it’s pretty easy to conclude that Motorola left out slow-motion video creation. That’s not the case at all.

Slow motion video recording is included in the Moto X 2014, it’s just not obvious that it is an option. In this how-to you’ll learn how to record slow motion video using the rear-facing 13 megapixel camera on the Moto X 2014.  There are no software downloads or extra apps involved.

Before you go recording slow motion video on your Moto X 2014. There’s a few things you might want to consider. First, many phones with slow-motion video capture have something called optical image stabilization. This technology ensures that users still get decent photos and videos even when they can’t keep their hand still. The Moto X 2014 does not have optical image stabilization. You are definitely going to want to keep your hand as steady as possible while recording your slow motion video. Failing to do so could leave you with a pretty wonky looking memory.

Unlock your Moto X 2014 by putting the PIN code or pattern lock in that you use to secure your device. In the next few steps we’ll guide you to the Camera app through the home screen.It’s also important to remember that you can go directly to the camera app when your device is locked by picking up your Moto X 2014 and twisting your wrist until you feel your device vibrate in your hand.

By default Motorola puts the Camera app on the home screen at the bottom-right corner. Tap on that icon to open Camera. If you’ve reconfigured your Moto X 2014’s home screen just tap the circular App drawer button in the bottom middle of your screen and select Camera from the list of installed apps.

Now place your left finger left edge of your Moto X 2014’s screen and slide it to the right to reveal the settings wheel. The Settings wheel allows you to quickly access anything you need to from within the Camera app itself.

By default the auto focus setting is the first thing you’ll see once you’ve dived into the Settings wheel. That’s ok. Tap the icon that looks like a white video recorder.

By default all videos are recorded in HD 1080p. That being this means that videos are at their normal speed and there are no effects added. Tap SloMo videos to record slow-motion videos. Now tap anywhere on your screen to be taken back to the view finder. Anywhere is fine, just don’t tap on the wheel again.

Now tap the video recording icon in the top-right corner of your screen. Remember to keep your hand as still as possible while moving it slightly to capture whatever the subject of your slow motion video is.

Adding Slow Motion Effects to a Video You’ve Already Recorded

Say you’ve already recorded some video and you’d like to add some slow motion video effects to it as well? That’s possible on the Moto X 2014 too. Go back to the home screen and look for the Gallery app.

Once you’ve opened the Galley app tap the word Album in the top left corner of your screen.

Now tap Videos.

Now select the video you’d like to make into a slow-motion video.

Tap anywhere on the blank black background to open the app settings.

Tap the three buttons in the top-right corner of your screen to open a sub menu. Then select Slow Motion Edit.

Now use the slider at the bottom to highlight the portions of the video you want to make into a slow motion video and hit Save.

That’s it. You’re all done. You can share these videos with friends and family by uploading them to your PC or Mac or through the Gallery app on your Moto X 2014. The important thing to remember is that just because you’ve changed your settings so that the Moto X 2014 is recording in slow-motion once doesn’t mean that’ll always happen. The Camera app on the Moto X 2014 does’t allow users to save settings like this. As long as you don’t close the app you’re fine, but if the Camera app gets closed or you restart your Moto X you’ll need to reconfigure the setting for Slow Motion video again.
