Published

on

As we push further into the fall and closer to the Android 5.0 Lollipop release in November, Samsung Galaxy smartphone and tablet owners are starting to shift their attention to Google’s Android 4.4 KitKat replacement. Samsung, however, is still focused on delivering Android 4.4 KitKat to a number of devices and today, we take a look at how things are shaping up at October comes to a close.

Since January, Samsung has been delivering Android 4.4.2 KitKat updates to select devices in the United States and abroad. We’ve seen updates push out to the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Note 2, and even the aging Samsung Galaxy S3. The Samsung Galaxy Android 4.4.2 KitKat update, as many Galaxy device owners know, brings new features and bug fixes that are important to their overall experience.

Android 4.4.2 KitKat isn’t the only Android update that Galaxy users have in their sights. Samsung is also rolling out Android 4.4.4 KitKat to select Galaxy devices. It also appears to be teasing plans for Android 5.0 Lollipop, the update that Google will use to replace Android 4.4 KitKat later on this year. Android 5.0 Lollipop hasn’t been confirmed for any Samsung devices though we’ve seen a number of potential details emerge.

While the future is looking bright, Samsung still appears to be focused on getting Android 4.4.2 KitKat out to users around the world. In fact, we’ve seen a ton of new details pour out of Samsung and its carrier partners during the month of October. With so many details swirling, we want to recap what we’ve seen from Samsung and its partners this month and also take a look at what’s next for devices like the Galaxy S5, Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3, and Galaxy Note 2.

This October Samsung Galaxy KitKat update breakdown will catch you up with the latest Android 4.4 KitKat details and it will also take a brief look at what we’ve heard about Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Android 4.4.2 KitKat Update Roll Out Continues

Samsung’s Android 4.4.2 KitKat roll out continues to plod along for Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets. Over the past month, we’ve seen a number of updates roll out including several missing Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.2 KitKat upgrades in Australia. That includes the Galaxy S4 mini that saw its Android 4.4.2 KitKat roll out start months after the initial wave of Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.2 KitKat updates pushed out back in February. It also includes the Galaxy S4 zoom, the variant that’s in possession of a higher grade camera.

We’ve also seen the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4.2 KitKat update continue to push, most recently in China, where it recently landed for a couple of variants on China Mobile. Samsung has also continued its Android 4.4.2 KitKat push for smartphones like the Galaxy Note 2, the device that arrived before the Galaxy Note 3 back in 2012.

The biggest picture is this. Samsung is still committed to a number of Android 4.4.2 KitKat roll outs. We’ve also seen a number of Android 4.4.2 KitKat bug fixes push out. So, if you’re still on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, there’s a good chance that you’re going to move to Android 4.4.2 KitKat update before moving to something else.

Samsung is clearly looking to complete most of these Android 4.4.2 KitKat pushes though there is still a slight chance that you’ll get Android 4.4.4 KitKat next instead of Android 4.4.2 or Android 5.0.

Android 4.4.4 KitKat Updates Scarce

Android 4.4.4 KitKat updates for older devices have been very scarce in the month of October. We’ve seen two Android 4.4.4 KitKat updates emerge for devices in the United States including the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 Android 4.4.4 KitKat update and the T-Mobile Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition Android 4.4.4 KitKat update.

Samsung’s Android 4.4.4 KitKat roll outs appear to be very selective and we’re simply not seeing the wide scale global roll outs that we were expecting when the company first started pushing out Android 4.4.4 KitKat earlier this year. That said, it looks like the company is going to deliver a number of Android 4.4.4 KitKat updates in the future.

Upcoming Galaxy KitKat Updates

Samsung and most of its carrier partners tend to stay silent when it comes to upcoming Android updates. And that’s why it’s so exciting when new Android update information emerges. In the past two weeks, we’ve seen a number of Android 4.4.2 KitKat update and Android 4.4.4 KitKat update details emerge and here’s what Galaxy users are looking at.

Galaxy S5 Review - 6

Today, French carrier SFR finally released an updated schedule for its Android devices and it lists several upcoming Samsung Galaxy Android 4.4.2 KitKat updates. The carrier is expected to push out updates for the Galaxy Note 2 4G, Galaxy S4 mini, Galaxy S4 zoom, Galaxy Grand 2, Galaxy Express 2, Galaxy Mega, and yes, the Galaxy S3 4G.

The Galaxy S3 Android 4.4.2 KitKat update is still missing for most devices outside the United States but it looks like SFR plans to get it out in November. SFR is one of the only carrier’s that’s confirmed an Android 4.4 KitKat release for the Galaxy S3 and the fact that an update is so close is absolutely huge for Galaxy S3 LTE owners all over the world.

Galaxy S5 Review - 15

A leak from JustAboutPhones suggests that Android 4.4.4 KitKat updates are on the way for a number of devices in the near future including the Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S3.

It appears that the Galaxy S5 Android 4.4.4 KitKat update has been completed for both international Galaxy S5 models. What this means is that a roll out could be imminent. The chart lists off a release in October though with the month winding down, hope is starting to slip away. The Galaxy S5 Android 4.4.4 KitKat update has already hit numerous devices including the Verizon Galaxy S5 in the U.S so the door certainly remains open.

The Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 3 LTE will reportedly be getting Android 4.4.4 KitKat and those updates will be apparently be deployed in October as well. We’ve also seen the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4.4 KitKat update strike the United States and we’ve seen unnamed Galaxy Note 3 updates pop up in recent days, so it’s possible that we see movement this month.

The Galaxy Note 3 Neo, Galaxy S4 LTE, and Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.4 KitKat updates are all reportedly in the final stages of testing with releases slated for November. A specific release date isn’t mentioned though we’ve already seen the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.4 KitKat update hit carriers like T-Mobile USA, a sign that a larger roll out could be close.

This chart also lists several pending Android 4.4.4 KitKat updates including updates for the Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Note 2 LTE, Galaxy Grand 2, Galaxy Grand 2 Duos, Galaxy S4 mini, and Galaxy S4 mini Duos. All of those updates are targeted for November as well so it appears that Samsung is trying to get Android 4.4.4 KitKat out to a ton of devices before the arrival of Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Android 5.0 Lollipop

Samsung still hasn’t announced its Android 5.0 Lollipop plans but a rumor from SamMobile puts Samsung’s first Android 5.0 updates in November or December. This is the first and only bit of information that we’ve heard about release dates. The timing, if true, would be faster than Samsung’s Android 4.4 KitKat push which took place in January after Android 4.4 KitKat’s release in November of 2013.

Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S3 - Size

What helps is that Samsung recently posted a photo of the Galaxy Note 4 with lollipops superimposed as the background. While it might not be anything, the timing of the photo is interesting. We’ve also seen the Galaxy S5 Android Lollipop update leak out ahead of release so there’s a very good chance that these two are going to be first in line.

For now, consumers will want to keep their eyes on Android 4.4 KitKat and temper Android 5.0 expectations. There’s a good chance that most updates won’t arrive until 2015.

Oh I have been fed up with all the talk of updates because I was expecting a KitKat update for my Note 3 back in March and these articles always talk about this information as if it is so exciting. Well it’s not exciting. It’s getting annoying. I have yet to get a Samsung phone to function properly and by the time they finally send an update that makes my phone work properly, it is outdated and I am due for a new one that already comes with the latest software. This pisses people off, so if it is exciting to anyone else, give me the medication you are taking because mine isn’t working
