Published

on

Back in September Motorola released a new Moto X for 2014, the Moto G, and even a Moto E smartphone earlier this year, but that isn’t all the company has planned. A powerhouse new smartphone for Verizon is coming soon, known as the DROID Turbo.

As if we didn’t know everything about the upcoming Motorola DROID Turbo for Verizon Wireless already, images leaked last week, and now just days before the official launch the device has been pictured in the flesh, and here’s everything you need to know.

Multiple leaks and a slew of rumors have all but confirmed a new smartphone coming soon for Verizon Wireless called the Motorola DROID Turbo, and after the entire user manual revealed all the key features last week, we know everything about it already. Add in the photos revealed today, and now all we really need is a release date. That said, below is everything we know so far about the new DROID Turbo.

Last year Verizon released a few DROID smartphones, as they do every year, and in 2014 one main device will arrive to rule them all. Verizon Wireless and Motorola have teamed up for a new DROID smartphone, only this year it looks to be the most promising yet. Borrowing features from previous models and the new Moto X, while improving across the board to be what could be the best smartphone of 2014.

We’ve seen photos before as the official Verizon @DroidLanding Twitter account accidentally posted photos early, not to mention the entire user manual leaked. That being said, today we have actual images of the device running, not just press photos, hinting at a release coming sooner rather than later.

Motorola’s new DROID Turbo for Verizon has some design hues from the previous DROID Ultra, all the features buyers love on the Moto X series, yet improved the camera, hardware, and delivered a massive battery for a phone that can’t be topped. It isn’t the best looking phone, but it sure sounds like a great overall device.

Release Date

Last week Verizon and Motorola confirmed that they’ll be holding a press event to announce the new DROID smartphone on October 28th, which is in just five days. We’ve heard a few rumors that it would be announced in mid October and released before the month was over, but that obviously didn’t play out.

Instead, a few leaks hint that Motorola and Verizon will reveal the phone on the 28th, and make it immediately available on Thursday October 30th. That being said, the DROID Does website countdown timer ends in 5 days, meaning it could actually be released on the 28th.

Verizon usually has a short pre-order so it’s possible they’ll announce it on Tuesday, and have a release date in the early days of November. We’ll update once we learn more.

Specs

The DROID Turbo is a beast of a smartphone. While it’s an eyesore, it packs a punch that can’t be argued with. Here’s the full rundown based on leaks, rumors, official device user manuals and more. This is the DROID Turbo.

DROID Turbo Specs

  • 5.2-inch 2560 x 1440 Quad-HD display
  • 2.7 GHz Snapdragon 805 Quad-core processor with 3GB of RAM
  • 32GB storage
  • Android 4.4.4 KitKat (nearly stock)
  • 21 Megapixel Rear and 2.1 front camera setup
  • 4k video recording
  • Front facing speaker
  • 3,900 mAh battery (wireless charging)
  • Turbo Charger Support
  • Water repellent (coating guards against everyday spills and up to 20 minutes in a downpour), scratch resistant
  • More

Battery Life

The Turbo stands for a few things. One being the powerful quad-core processor, but the other is the battery. The DROID Turbo uses a new Snapdragon 805 processor with Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 technology. Add in Motorola’s new Turbo Charger (that will be bundled in the box) and this phone gets 8 hours of battery life after just 15 minutes on the charger. Impressive right?

The battery is 3,900 mAh in size, which is huge. As a comparison the LG G3 is 3,000, the Galaxy S5 is 2,800, and previous DROID’s were 3,300 mAh. This means with nearly a 4,000 mAh battery you’ll rarely need a charger, but when you do, only 15 minutes on the Turbo Charger and you’re good for the entire day, or out all night.

Battery life and the Turbo charging will be the key selling points of the new DROID Turbo. Well, that and the 21 megapixel camera.

Camera

We don’t know all the details yet, but the user manual and a few leaks have all confirmed a massive 21 megapixel camera on the back. Pixels aren’t everything, as the 8MP iPhone 6 camera is still one of the best around, but expect good things from the DROID Turbo camera. Things like 4k video recording, slow-mo recording may be included, and a two-stage flash for excellent low-light photos as well.

Most likely Motorola will have some new camera tricks, features and software on board, but we’ll have to wait for them to announce all the details on stage come October 28th.

Final Thoughts

Aside from the durable and rugged looking design, there’s nothing not to like about the Motorola DROID Turbo. Except for the fact that it may only come to Verizon Wireless, even though we’ve seen a few small leaks suggesting a possible sister device for AT&T.

It is dust and water resistant (but not IP67 certified) while offering wireless charging, fast wired charging, a huge battery, stunning camera, and the latest Android 4.4.4 KitKat software. We’re looking at what will likely be a device for $199 on contract, and will update the moment all the details are officially announced.
