How to Record Video at 60 FPS on iPhone 6

The iPhone 6 comes with all sorts of improvements over the iPhone 5s, including some new features added to the camera. The iPhone 6 can now shoot 1080p video at an impressive 60 frames per second. Here’s how to enable it.

The camera on the iPhone 6 is rather impressive. Most notably, it’s equipped with faster autofocus and better image stabilization, with the iPhone 6 Plus even sporting optical image stabilization.

The new iPhone 6 models can also record slo-mo videos at 240 frames per second, whereas the iPhone 5s is limited to 120 frames per second. Plus, both devices come with continuous autofocus, as well as video stabilization so that your videos aren’t as shaky as they normally would be.

However, perhaps the most impressive feature is the ability to record 1080p HD video at 60 frames per second. The iPhone 5s is only capable of doing so at 30 frames per second, but the iPhone 6 now allows twice the frame rate for smoother playback.

What’s So Great About 60 FPS Videos?

Recording videos at 60 frames per second definitely has its benefits. Most notably, it’s a great feature to have whenever you’re recording fast-paced action, like any kind of sport or racing event. Recording at 60 frames per second allows you to capture all of the action while still keeping a smooth frame rate.

Shooting at 60 frames per second does allow for clearer and crisper videos, which can be incredibly beneficial, but you also miss out on that cinematic feel, especially if you’re more serious about producing video content. More often than not, though, you’re really just looking to shoot some casual videos on your iPhone, for which 60 frames per second can be really useful.

Plus, shooting at 60 frames per second allows you to slow down the footage and still be able to play it back at 30 frames per second, sort of like slo-mo video mode on the iPhone, only you’ll have to import the video in a video editor and slow down the footage in that, as iOS doesn’t allow you to slow down videos shot at 60 frames per second.

Nevertheless, if you ever find yourself needing or wanting to shoot video at 60 frames per second on your iPhone 6, here’s how to enable it.

How to Record 60 FPS Videos on iPhone 6

By default when you shoot video on your iPhone 6, it will record at 30 frames per second, so if you want to record at a higher frame rate, you’ll need to enable 60 frames per second in the settings.

  1. Open up the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Photos & Camera.
  3. Find Record Video at 60 FPS and turn the toggle switch to On.

Furthermore, it’s important to know that videos that were record at 60 frames per second will take up more storage space than videos recorded at 30 frames per second, so that’s definitely something to be aware of if you’re low on storage space.
