Motorola Android 5.0 Lollipop Update Details Emerge

Published

on

Earlier this month Google quickly took a moment to announce a trio of new devices, as well as the latest update to the Android ecosystem. That being Android 5.0 Lollipop. The first device to run Google’s new operating system will be the Nexus 9 tablet, but this week those with Motorola devices will be happy to know they’ll get it soon.

After revealing the new Android 5.0 Lollipop along with the Motorola-made Nexus 6, the Nexus 9, and a new Nexus Player, manufacturers begun announcing light update details for all their respective devices, and that includes Motorola.

While Motorola confirmed many of its key smartphones over the past two years will indeed be updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop, this week a new website dedicated to update progress has been released. Read on for all the details regarding Moto Android 5.0 Lollipop updates.

Earlier this month Motorola detailed that many of their premium smartphones released last year, and in 2014 will all see updates to Android 5.0 Lollipop before the end of the year. This is great news, and something we’ve also heard from Samsung, LG, as well as a 90 day update window for most HTC smartphones.

Motorola didn’t give a detailed timeline for updates, and simply stated that it will arrive “in the coming months” for many of its key smartphones. Those being the DROID Ultra and DROID’s from 2013, the Moto X, Moto G, Moto E, and the new Moto X and G for 2014, just to name a few. The newly announced DROID Turbo is also expected to see the same update around a similar timeframe.

However, to better ease the minds of owners and prospective buyers of all things Motorola, a new website has been launched dedicated to being more open and transparent about the entire upgrade progress and status for each device.

The image above is all that was provided this week. With Motorola promising updates to Android 5.0 Lollipop for all the devices pictured above. That will be changed once the DROID Turbo arrives later this month, to include it. They also had this to say about it.

Our current plans for Lollipop upgrades include the following products. (shown above)  This will evolve over time, so check back for changes.

Mentioning that this will evolve over time suggests that it’s possible other devices will be added at a later date. Smartphones like the popular DROID RAZR HD, but that’s approaching the 18 month promise for updates, and could be left out this time around. We’ll have to wait and see.

Android 5.0 Lollipop hasn’t been officially released by Google, but many have speculated the official launch date will be November 3rd when the Nexus 9 officially hits store shelves. Motorola goes further by stating that once it arrives, they’ll begin working on their technology and working with carriers and partners to begin the update process.

What this means is that Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and all other carriers work with Motorola to ensure the updates run smoothly on its network, and must approve updates before they begin. This is nothing new, and we can still expect all the devices listed above to see updates by the end of the year, or in early January at the latest.

The official Motorola Android 5.0 update page doesn’t have any dates or progress information yet, but we’ll report back once more details and update schedules begin to arrive.

My Droid Razr Hd Maxx has so much life left. Please update my Droid. It has been a great phone and I’m not due for an upgrade until April. By then i plan on buying the next great Moto not linked to a carrier.
