Straight Talk iPhone 6: 7 Facts to Know Before Buying

Published

on

The Straight Talk iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are finally available a month after Apple released the new iPhones on major carriers. Straight Talk offers cheap monthly plans with plenty of minutes, texting and 4G LTE data. It is a very attractive option for users who want the new iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus but need a lower monthly bill.

With the Straight Talk iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus buyers pay the full price for the new iPhone, but the cheaper monthly plan prices still lead to savings over traditional carriers.

A Straight Talk iPhone 6 sounds like a great deal, but there are things that buyers need to know before signing up and paying $650 for a new iPhone. You can bring your current iPhone to Straight Talk, or you can now buy a Straight Talk iPhone 6 direct from the carrier or at Walmart.

What you need to know about the Straight Talk iPhone 6 before you buy.

What you need to know about the Straight Talk iPhone 6 before you buy.

A Straight Talk iPhone plan starts at $45 a month and $60 a month for international calling. For the lower price there are some trade-offs that you need to be aware of before you buy the Straight Talk iPhone 6.

This is a pre-paid carrier, but you can set up an auto-pay plan so you aren’t always entering in codes and remembering a monthly payment.

You’ll need to compare a variety of plans to make sure you are getting a deal, but for the same $45 a month you get vastly less data and need to pay for the phone each month on Verizon or $60 a month for just 1GB of data.

Here are 7 facts buyers need to know about the Straight Talk iPhone 6 before buying the new iPhone on this popular pre-paid carrier.

Straight Talk iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

The great news is that you can buy a Straight Talk iPhone 6 or Straight Talk iPhone 6 Plus. Normally we see some limitations on other carriers, but Apple is letting anyone get in on the iPhone 6 Plus demand. All of these details apply to both of the new iPhones.

The Straight Talk iPhone 6 features a 4.7-inch display and the iPhone 6 Plus a 5.5-inch display. The iPhone 6 Plus features a higher resolution 1080P display and a camera with optical image stabilization. Both new iPhones use an Apple A8 processor, come with many sensors and an all metal design.

16GB Only, But All Color Options

There is no 64GB Straight Talk iPhone 6 available. Like Walmart, the Straight Talk iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are only available with the lowest amount of storage. Although a 16GB iPhone 6 is enough for some users, there are good reasons not to buy the 16GB iPhone 6.

Straight Talk offers all colors, but only 16GB options.

On the upside, you can buy the Straight Talk iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in all three colors. This includes gold, solver and space gray. Here’s help deciding which iPhone 6 color to buy.

4G LTE Data for the Straight Talk iPhone 6

Straight Talk started offering 4G LTE data last year, which means consumers can enjoy the same speeds as on major carriers. This is key to a good iPhone 6 experience, since many apps and services assume you are using a fast connection. Watch the iPhone 6 speed test in the video below.

Same Network as Major Carriers

As the iPhone 6 speed test video shows, 4G LTE speeds and coverage vary between carriers. The good news about the Straight Talk iPhone 6 is that it connects to the same networks as the big names in wireless. Straight Talk does not list the specific networks but it is very likely that the Straight Talk iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus purchased from Walmart will run on AT&T. There is a chance it will run on Verizon, but it is less likely.

Here's a look at Straight Talk coverage.

Unlimited Data With a Catch

When you look at the Straight Talk iPhone 6 plans you’ll see unlimited data listed, but it isn’t unlimited. Despite the need for an asterisk, Straight Talk is more up front than in earlier years.

You aren’t cut off after a set amount, but your data is slowed down after you use 3GB of high-speed data in a 30 day period. You’ll still connect, but it will likely be at slower 3G speeds. At the end of the 30 day period you’ll get your high-speed data back.

Straight Talk still reserves the right to cancel your line if you use too much data, but the new terms better explain limits and use.

Customer Support isn’t Up to Big Names

The last time Gotta Be Mobile used Straight Talk and needed support, we ended up bounced between Straight Talk and Tracfone with no real resolution to our problem.

Friends and family who switched to Straight Talk and brought their own iPhones found little help when data connectivity failed, despite a simple software solution.

You may receive good support, but there is not the same store and support agent availability as with the bigger carriers, so keep that in mind.

No Tethering

There is no support for tethering or personal hotspots with Straight Talk. That means you can’t use the new Instant Hotspot between your Straight Talk iPhone 6 and Mac running OS X Yosemite.

No hotspot or tethering options on the Straight Talk iPhone 6.

No hotspot or tethering options on the Straight Talk iPhone 6.

In fact you can’t use any type of hotspot or Internet Sharing. It is not included in any plans and if you are eventually able to use an iPhone 6 jailbreak to do this, you risk cancellation by Straight Talk.

Is there a trade in option with straight talk? Like if I have iphone 5 and I want 6, can I trade in and top up for iPhone 6? We really need that with straight talk.

Great article however I wish there was some kind of wrap up. It seems like the piece just drops right off with no clear ending. Also there is a typo in the silver while explaining the color options.

0==08 my buddy’s mother-in-law makes $63 every hour on the laptop . She has been without work for eight months but last month her income was $21480 just working on the laptop for a few hours. view it now>>>>> Get More

@Joserblack, Your buddy’s mother-in-law makes $63/hr, and $21480/mth, last month (from posting) was July. There are 31 days in July, which means your buddy’s mother-in-law would have worked $21480/$63=341hrs, or 341/31=11hrs/day. 11*7=77hrs/wk. I mean, if I was making $63/hr, I’d probably be working 77hrs/wk too, because I’d be making $258k but I don’t think that 77hrs/wk is classified as “a few hours”.

I bought the iPhone 6s and have had a horrible month of the internet working when it wants to

I paid a lot for the 5c iPhone in March & half the time or more the Internet doesn’t work, if I hadn’t spent so much for the phone I wouldn’t be as upset as I am. When it says unlimited data I expected to have use of it at all times not only a 1/4 of the time. People I know that bought the cheaper phones have no trouble, so I’m very aggravated! Anyone else having same issues?

Do not buy an iphone on straight talk!!!! With them only offering the 16gb memory version of the phone, it is an absolute nightmare! DO NOT RECOMMEND. Will never do it again. They need to offer better versions in the future.
