Nexus 6 vs Nexus 5: Size Comparison

Now that we’re enjoying the Nexus 6 and posted our initial hands-on and impressions video, we’ve received multiple questions from prospective buyers regarding the sheer size of the device. It’s a big phone, and here we compare it to Google’s own Nexus 5 from last year.

Google’s new Nexus 6 is a whale of a smartphone, a phablet if you will, coming in with a massive 5.96-inch Quad-HD display and some stunning features to accompany the new Android 5.0 Lollipop. And while we can’t show you everything just yet, below we’ll compare it to the phone it will be replacing, or at least topping.

In our video below you’ll see a side by side comparison of the new Nexus 6 compared to the LG-made Nexus 5. They both have impressive specs, and run pure Android. The Nexus 6 release date hasn’t arrived yet, but hopefully this will help prospective buyers have a better idea of what it’s about before they buy, or let them comfortably keep using the Nexus 5, or buy Google’s flagship from last year at a much lower price point.

Last month Google announced the all new Nexus 6 smartphone along with the Nexus 9 tablet, and Android 5.0 Lollipop. Later, it confirmed a Nexus 6 pre-order date for October 29th. Right on time, the Nexus 6 went up for pre-order as expected, but sold out in less than 5 minutes by my count.

The Nexus 6 pre-order situation was rather poor, selling out in minutes, but Google’s promised more stock each Wednesday for the next few weeks. Or until the release date. To make matters a little better, Motorola now has the phone for sale as well. The Nexus 5 was announced in October of last year, and arrived a few weeks later in November, just like we’re expecting Google to do again with the Nexus 6. It had a lot to offer, was an impressive phone, but as you see above it’s simply no match for the new Nexus 6. That said, the big 5.96-inch size and big price tag may not be for everyone.

The 5-inch 1080p screen is no match when compared to the bright, crisp, and sharp 5.96-inch 2560 x 1440 quad-hd display on the Nexus 6, but that isn’t all that is better. The new Nexus has been improved in every single aspect, and here’s the details.

The Nexus 5 had a decent display and some impressive specs for a device in 2013, but the camera, speakers, and small battery were all areas of concern. This year the Nexus 6 has a huge 3,220 mAh battery with Turbo Charging features, the camera is 13 megapixels and should be much improved, and the front facing speakers are a huge and much welcomed edition.

All said and done, the Nexus 5 was $349 and $399 for the 16 and 32GB version. This year though, the Nexus 6 is $649 or $699 and that gives you 32GB or 64GB. So while storage and all the specs are much improved, they come at a price.

Thankfully Google’s keeping the Nexus 5 on the Google Play Store as a more wallet friendly option, at least for now, but there’s no telling how long it will last. The Nexus 6 runs the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop, and the Nexus 5 update is expected to arrive later this month. Both are excellent pure Android devices, but clearly the Nexus 6 is at the top of the chart. In all categories from specs, size, to price and more. You decide which is right for you.
