Samsung Galaxy S4 Lollipop Update All but Confirmed

on

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 5.0 Lollipop update is all but confirmed thanks to a new leak that exposes the software ahead of the highly anticipated but still rumored Galaxy S4 Lollipop release date.

Earlier this year, Google took the stage at Google I/O 2014 and announced a slew of new products including Android 5.0 Lollipop, its replacement for Android 4.4 KitKat. At the time, the company showed off a number of new features including the update’s Material Design that delivers massive changes to the look and feel of the Android operating system. The company did not, however, confirm an Android 5.0 release date.

Last month, Google confirmed the Android 5.0 Lollipop for Nexus devices and it’s expected to land sometime this month for the Nexus 7, Nexus 4, Nexus 5 and Nexus 10. Nexus devices aren’t the only ones getting Android 5.0 Lollipop though. Several companies including HTC, LG, Motorola, and Sony have confirmed upcoming Android 5.0 Lollipop releases for their devices. Samsung, however, still isn’t ready to talk Android 5.0.

That hasn’t stopped a number of Samsung Galaxy Lollipop release details from surfacing though and over the past two weeks we’ve gotten a glimpse at Samsung Galaxy Android 5.0 updates in action and heard about Samsung Galaxy Lollipop release dates. Today, we’ve spotted another high profile leak that offers some new details to Samsung Galaxy S4 users.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 5.0 Lollipop release is all but confirmed thanks to SamMobile. The site has leaked an early version of the software today and put it up for the world to see. The Galaxy S4 Lollipop update is in its early stages and still isn’t stable enough for public consumption but its presence is key for Galaxy S4 users.

First, it confirms that the Galaxy S4 Lollipop update exists. Second, it points to progress towards a Galaxy S4 Android 5.0 release date. The Galaxy S4 Lollipop release is currently rumored for 2015 though rumors still haven’t been able to narrow down a specific release window for the company’s update. Given how buggy this update looks, Samsung is still weeks, if not months away from a public release.

There are a number of changes on board the Galaxy S4 Lollipop update including the Lollipop optimized TouchWiz user interface that emerged on board a Galaxy S5 Lollipop leak a few weeks back. Older devices typically don’t get the full major Android update change log though it looks like Samsung will be loading up this update enhancements, fixes and features. Look for the company to build on this early base as it pushes toward release.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 5.0 Lollipop update isn’t the only update rumored for arrival. The Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 4, and Galaxy Note 3 are all expected to get the Android 5.0 update down the road with the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.0 updates rumored for November or December, ahead of 2015. Samsung’s Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 are expected to be first in line to the update though nothing is confirmed.

Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S3 - Build Quality

Devices like the all new Samsung Galaxy Alpha should be in good shape as well as Samsung typically extends software updates for two years. Smartphones like the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 sit in a gray area. Both devices are now more than two years old which means that there’s a chance they will not get Android 5.0 and the features coming with it. Samsung hasn’t confirmed anything yet so the door remains open for all devices hovering in and around the two year mark.

Android 5.0 Lollipop is expected to roll out to a number of Galaxy S4, Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 competitors including the Moto X, HTC One M8, and HTC One M7. Those release dates have yet to be confirmed though Motorola and HTC typically keep their customers in the loop in the build up to their releases. More information for Samsung devices and others should emerge in the weeks after Google’s initial Android 5.0 release.
