Here’s help to decide if you should buy the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus.

It is still hard to find an iPhone 6 Plus in stock, but you can check out demo units at an Apple Store, carrier store and even some retailers so it is possible to compare the devices in your own hands before buying a new iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus.

Both of the models are available on  VerizonAT&TSprint, T-Mobil and US Cellular. There are also smaller carriers like Boost Mobile, Straight Talk and others selling both devices.

We’re sharing this advice on which iPhone 6 you should buy after using the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus for over a month.

iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus: 7 Key Differences

Before we break out into more detail, here are the main iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus differences that buyers should be aware of. Our iPhone 6 Plus review video above also compares many of these differences.

  • The iPhone 6 Plus is significantly bigger.
  • The iPhone 6 Plus features a bigger, higher resolution screen.
  • The iPhone 6 Plus includes Optical Image Stabilization.
  • The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus both use an Apple A8 processor.
  • You won’t notice a difference in speed between the iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus.
  • The iPhone 6 Plus offers longer battery life.
  • The iPhone 6 Plus is $100 more expensive.

We’ll dive into these items below, but that is a quick look at the iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus comparison.

iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus Price

You can’t miss the price difference between the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. You’ll pay $100 more for the iPhone 6 Plus on contract and off contract. The off contract iPhone 6 is $649 and the off contract iPhone 6 Plus is $749, for 16GB of storage.

Here’s the breakdown of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus prices for the various levels of storage. For most users a 64GB iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus is the best option. A 16GB iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus does not offer a lot of room for apps, music, photos and movies and users will run out much faster than they expect.

iPhone 6 Prices

  • iPhone 6 16GB – $199
  • iPhone 6 64GB – $299
  • iPhone 6 128GB – $399

iPhone 6 Plus Prices

  • iPhone 6  Plus 16GB – $299
  • iPhone 6 Plus 64GB – $399
  • iPhone 6 Plus 128GB – $499

If that means buying a 64GB iPhone 6 instead of a 16GB iPhone 6 Plus, that’s something many buyers should consider. The amount of storage is not something you can change on either phone, and even though iCloud makes storing photos off the iPhone 64GB is still more manageable for users who keep a phone for two or more years.

iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus Size

The iPhone 6 Plus is significantly bigger than the iPhone 6. For many users the iPhone 6 will be the best option, and even that is an adjustment when coming from the iPhone 4s or iPhone 5.

The iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus photo above shows the difference in size.

Both of the new iPhones feature an all metal design with curved edges. This does help users get their hands around the larger iPhone frames, but it is slippery. Most of the Gotta Be Mobile staff put a case on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus to make it easier to grip.

  • iPhone 6 – 138.1 x 67.0 x 6.9 mm
  • iPhone 6 Plus – 158.1 x 77.8 x 7.1 mm

The iPhone 6 fits in most pockets easier, although in our iPhone 6 review we note that in some shorts even the iPhone 6 feels like it is about to fall out due to the larger size. In a pair of men’s jeans, the iPhone 6 fits very well, and the iPhone 6 Plus is a little tighter fit. It all boils down to the depth of the pocket and the clothes you wear. Both phones fit into most jeans and shorts pockets, but in those with shallow pockets the iPhone 6 Plus is cumbersome to carry.

Women should check the size of the iPhone 6 Plus out in store, as pockets in women’s clothing are typically smaller and sometimes non-existent.

Ultimately, the iPhone 6 isn’t as easy to use with one hand, even with Apple’s Reachability and third-party one-handed keyboards. Simply holding the largest iPhone while in bed or walking down the street is a little more challenging than with the iPhone 5s. It’s easier to hold the iPhone 6, but still and adjustment.

iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus Display

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus offer larger displays than the iPhone 5s and iPhone 4s, by a wide margin. This is probably the biggest visible difference when comparing iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus.

The iPhone 6 Plus offers a larger, higher resolution display.

The iPhone 6 Plus offers a larger, higher resolution display.

The iPhone 6 features a 4.7-inch display with a 1,334 x 750 resolution. The iPhone 6 Plus features a 5.5-inch 1,920 x 1,080 resolution. What does this mean for you?

Simply put the iPhone 6 Plus display packs more pixels per inch, which means text looks sharper and you can see more detail on the screen. The iPhone 6 Plus is also larger, so it’s better for watching a full movie, playing a game or other tasks where a big screen is needed.

The iPhone 6 Plus display also includes a landscape mode not found on the iPhone 6. This lets you use the iPhone 6 when it is on the side, and you can see more information in Apple Apps like Calendar and Notes. The video above shows this mode, which looks very similar to the iPad version of these apps.

Apple’s iPhone 6 display doesn’t pack in as many pixels as the 6 Plus or most Android competitors, but that it’s still a nice looking display and a more manageable size for many users.

If you plan to use your iPhone as a mobile entertainment device, instead of bringing an iPad mini with you, the larger screen is a huge reason to buy the larger iPhone.

iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus Camera

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus both include a new 8MP camera with larger pixels and pixel focus technology to help focus faster. There is a dual-LED flash and both phones use the same camera software. The only difference is that the iPhone 6 Plus includes Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) to help prevent blurry photos.

This feature won’t keep your kid or pet from turning out blurry though. Instead it will help in a low light landscape photo, or of a still object that you are taking a photo of. After using both phones for over a month, there may be times where the OIS helps, but in most comparison photos we took, both cameras deliver good-looking results. You can see samples below.

Is the iPhone 6 Plus Worth the Extra $100?

If all you really want is to know if the iPhone 6 Plus is worth $100 more than the iPhone 6 it boils down to what you want from a phone. You need to consider what size of screen you want and how big of a phone you can commit to carrying around.

Pick the iPhone 6 that fits your needs best. There aren't many exclusive features between the two.

Pick the iPhone 6 that fits your needs best. There aren’t many exclusive features between the two.

The iPhone 6 Plus offers a larger screen that is hands down better for watching a movie or playing games for long periods of time. If you want a big screen you can put in your pocket, spend the extra $100 and enjoy the longer battery life as a benefit.

If you think the iPhone 6 Plus is too big, that’s fine. Buy the iPhone 6, save $100, and enjoy your new iPhone. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus offer essentially the same performance for most users and it’s tough to tell which camera is better for most photos.
