Halo: Master Chief Collection Problems Emerge

It hasn’t yet been a full day since Microsoft released Halo: The Master Chief Collection and already gamers are reporting a number of Halo: the master Chief Collection problems.

Xbox One owners began reporting Halo: The Master Chief Collection problems almost before release festivities at midnight began. Early on the issues weren’t game focused. Instead, they were more about how users got the game on their consoles in the first place. Early in the evening users began reporting big spikes in the amount of time it took to download Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

In about three hours our own digital download of Halo: The Master Chief Collection sat at about 8% total. That, in itself caused a bit of mayhem. Microsoft doesn’t seem to have that entirely fixed, even this morning our own download of Halo: The Master Chief Collection is showing 14% after two and a half hours of downloading.

Then there are the widespread Halo: The Master Chief Collection matchmaking problems that have cropped up for those who have managed to get their hands on the game. Halo: The Master Chief Collection includes every multiplayer map and mode from Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo 4. That’s a lot of people to manage and connect. Early reports are that Halo: The Master Chief Collection is sometimes taking 20 minutes or more to get matches started.

Late last night the @Halo Twitter account confirmed that there were issues, saying “We’re aware that some are experiencing longer than normal matchmaking search times.” Subsequent messages went on to advise players that they were working on ironing out the issues. An hour later developer 343 Industries advised users to exit the multiplayer if they were still having issues and then try again a few minutes later.

Halo: The Master Chief problems weren’t completely unexpected. The game has tons of different modes and matchmaking is a complex thing. The problem is that Microsoft needed to land the Halo: The Master Chief Collection launch. Halo: The Master Chief Collection is this year’s must-have Xbox One title. It’s exclusively available on the Xbox One, too. A flubbed Halo: The Master Chief Collection launch isn’t just bad for the game, it is detrimental to what Microsoft is trying to achieve with the game.

Since launching last year, the Xbox One has trailed Sony’s PS4 in sales. With the PS4 going through a slight dry spell for first-party games, Halo: The Master Chief Collection is the first chance Microsoft has had in exploiting this weakness.

Besides multiplayer, Halo: The Master Chief Collection includes the single player campaigns from across the Halo franchise too. As far as we can tell, there haven’t been that many issues where it is concerned. No one has pointed to anything big being wrong with those like game saving or big drops in frame rate. That is great for buyers, who can pick up the game and almost immediately begin reliving their favorite moments in the series without worry about matchmaking issues.

Last night Microsoft showed off the Halo 5: The Guardians multiplayer for the first time. Access to that multiplayer is included in Halo: The Master Chief Collection, but it’s not being effected by these multiplayer problems since it isn’t available for users to play just yet. Last night Microsoft confirmed that Halo 5: The Guardians beta won’t be available for users to test on the Xbox One until December 29th.

Halo: the Master Chief Collection is available through the Xbox Store for $60. It’s also available for purchase at traditional retailers like Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Target on disc. Purchasing a physical copy gets buyers around the game’s egregious download times now. That being said, they’ll still need to update the game once it’s on their console.
