The Android Lollipop Moto X 2014 update that adds a completely new design, enhanced notification options, and all sorts of refreshed Android apps, is now available for users to download to their personal devices.

Motorola began rolling out the Android Lollipop Moto X 2014 update, just hours after those with a keen eye noticed that the Android Lollipop Moto X 2014 release notes were available on its website.

In a post about the new Android Lollipop release, The Official Motorola Blog points to the update also being available for more than just the Moto X 2014. The complete list of devices being updated to Android Lollipop by Motorola today include the United States GSM version of the Moto G 2014 and the international version of the Moto G 2014. Motorola has plans to have Android Lollipop go to the Moto X, Moto G 2014, Droid Turbo, Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx, Droid Mini and Moto E.

That Motorola was able to roll out Android Lollipop to the Moto X 2014 so quickly is impressive. The company has staked its reputation, on creating Android devices with lightweight changes and quick Android updates. Users are already reporting that their Moto X 2014 is prompting them to download the Android Lollipop Moto X 2014 update – at least most of them are.

As with all smartphone updates there’s a catch. While Motorola has officially finished working on the Android Lollipop update, today it’s only going out to those who own the Moto X 2014 Pure Edition. The Pure Edition is the device that Motorola sells and finances directly from its Moto Maker website. In addition to being compatible with just about every carrier, it gets its updates directly from Motorola, hence the update being available so quickly.

Unfortunately for those who used an upgrade token from AT&T or Verizon on the Moto Maker website, things are more nuanced. Moto X 2014 devices purchased with an upgrade token or directly from a carrier store aren’t Pure Edition devices. This means that they are locked and can’t be used on wireless networks other than the one they have.

Non-Pure Edition Moto X 2014 devices also have carrier changes included in them. In short, Motorola is finished working on their Android Lollipop Moto X 2014 update, but each of the carriers that sell the Moto X 2014 will need to make their own changes and test the update beforehand. It could be weeks or even months before Moto X 2014 buyers on AT&T and T-Mobile see the upgrade.

Android Lollipop is all about making the Moto X 2014 and all Android smartphones better in a bunch of different subtle ways. A flashlight is now built into Android and available at a moment’s notice, a new battery settings area makes prolonging the time between charges a bit easier. With the update the Moto X 2014 now gains multiple user support for the first time.

The complete refresh of the internet isn’t one of the things that are subtle. With Android Lollipop, the entire Android interface has received a new coat of paint. Every single Google-made app has been updated with brighter colors and more focus on content. There’s a lot of stark and minimalistic design in each app, and a number of Android apps have been redesigned so that they’re easier to use in addition to being more attractive.

Moto X 2014 Pure Edition users should notice a notification on their screen asking them if they would like to update immediately or wait for a later time. The update can be manually trigger from the About Phone area in the Settings app too. Before starting the update, it’s definitely a good idea to connect to a Wi-Fi network. The Android Lollipop Moto X 2014 update is a 500MB download.
