Android 5.0 Lollipop Update Confirmed for More Tablet Users

This week has been loaded with details surrounding the official release and rollout of the new Android 5.0 Lollipop update, and this morning we have more good news for Android tablet users. Today NVIDIA confirmed the company’s impressive new SHIELD Tablet will be among the first tablets to run Google’s latest Android 5.0 update.

Yesterday Google finally released Android 5.0 Lollipop updates for most Nexus users. Those include the Nexus 7 (2012 & 2013) as well as the Nexus 10, not to mention the Nexus 5 smartphone. At the same time a few Motorola smartphones started to receive the update, but there’s been no news on the tablet front.

The Nexus 9 was the first device to arrive with Android 5.0 Lollipop, and is the only tablet available with the newest update out of the box. However, along with Nexus tablets, today NVIDIA promised the Android 5.0 update will arrive for its users next week.

The NVIDIA SHIELD tablet is one of the better cheap Android tablets released in 2014, and it has some impressive specs that stack up quite nicely against the Nexus 9. If it’s too expensive for buyers, the SHIELD tablet is a good alternative that many don’t know about.

Before we get started on the update, the NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet comes with an 8-inch 1080p HD display, a similar NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor as the new Nexus 9, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage as well as micro-SD support, 5 megapixel front and rear cameras, as well as dual front facing speakers, just like the Nexus 9.

It’s a well-rounded tablet that runs nearly pure Android like Nexus devices, has a built in stylus, comes in a 4G LTE model, and costs much less than Google’s new Nexus 9. That being $299 for the 16GB model, and $399 for the 32GB 4G LTE variant. Meaning it’s much more wallet friendly than the Nexus 9.

Today NVIDIA confirmed the news in a blog post. Stating that all NVIDIA SHIELD owners can expect the update to Android 5.0 Lollipop to start rolling out next week on November 18th, making it one of the first devices and first tablets to run the latest version of Android.

Along with the update will be some other sweet treats aside from Lollipop, and that’s the Green Box. Giving users access to extremely popular PC games exclusively on their tablet. The popular Half-Life 2, Portal, and now even Half-Life 2: Episode 1 will be on board after the update.

Aside from all the software changes and new gaming options there’s also support for NVIDIA GRID to stream games from your desktop computers, and a redesigned and improved Dabbler app for drawing and creating art with the included stylus.

So far NVIDIA is one of the only tablet makers to announce any details regarding an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop. While many owners of Samsung Galaxy Tabs, ASUS tablets, and others can expect updates eventually, none will be here as soon as the Android 5.0 update for NVIDIA’s SHIELD. Stay tuned, as the update will arrive on November 18th.
