LG G3 Update Rolling Out as Users Wait for Lollipop

Published

on

Since being released earlier this year the LG G3 has yet to see any major software updates. Still running on Android 4.4.2 KitKat, many owners are patiently awaiting the upgrade to Android 5.0 Lollipop. Today news arrived that the AT&T LG G3 is receiving an update, but sadly no Lollipop has arrived just yet.

The LG G3 currently runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat, and appears to be skipping over Android 4.4.4 KitKat in favor of jumping straight to Android 5.0 Lollipop before the end of the year. LG confirmed the update was coming soon last week, and we’ve even seen some leaked video of it running and ready for a release.

Today though, while users won’t be receiving Android 5.0 Lollipop, those with the AT&T LG G3 can look forward to a much needed software update that has started rolling out this morning. It’s mostly small changes, but below are all the details owners need to know.

The LG G3 on AT&T is receiving a quick software update that is addressing multiple issues, but it won’t be upgrading you to Android 5.0 Lollipop. Many of the enhancements and security patches that arrive with Android 4.4.4 KitKat are included, as well as a few other things, so it’s recommended that all owners accept the over the air update.

According to the quick changelog posted over at the AT&T support page, the LG G3 is getting a few patches, tweaks, and performance improvements, just to name a few.

Recently many users have complained about slowdowns on the G3 after using it for a few months, and performance has somewhat been lacking. While we can’t be sure that’s being addressed here today, performance improvements are mentioned. Here’s the quick changelog for all those LG G3 owners.

  • “No power on” Fix via Qualcomms patch
  • GMS (Google Mobile Service) update
  • Google Security Patches
  • Stability improvements
  • Mobile TV 6.0
  • Skyfire Toolbar removal

AT&T and LG have delivered a fix courtesy of Qualcomm that fixes a no power on glitch that some users have experienced. Where the phone simply won’t turn on in some instances, but works later. Then of course some Google services and security patches, likely those that arrived with Android 4.4.4 KitKat earlier this summer.

They do mention stability improvements, but that’s all the changelog details on that front. Hopefully this will fix some of the crashes, lag, and other issues that have been plaguing a small number of LG G3 owners.

Some of AT&T’s bloatware made it in the update, that being the Mobile TV 6.0 app, and they’ve also removed the Skyfire Toolbar, whatever that is. Looking at our own AT&T LG G3 there’s nothing of that sort, so users don’t need to worry about this at the moment.

As usual, the update will be rolling out in stages starting today. Users can head into settings > about phone > and check for updates to get the latest and greatest. Or just wait and accept the over the air update once the notification arrives on your handset. As we mentioned above, a few leaks suggested Android 5.0 Lollipop is headed to the LG G3 before the end of the month, and we’ll update once we have more details regarding the US update plans.
