Nexus 7 & Nexus 5 Android 5.0 Lollipop Problems Start

Published

on

Google’s Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop release delivers new features, bug fixes, and a brand new look to owners of the Nexus 5, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10. However, it looks like the update is also delivering various Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop problems to those that have made the move from Android 4.4 KitKat to Google’s brand new operating system.

In October, Google announced a number of brand new Android products including a Nexus 6 smartphone from Motorola, a Nexus 9 tablet from HTC, and an Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 10, and Nexus 5. It also confirmed Android 5.0 Lollipop for its stable of Google Play Edition devices. At the time, the company said that the updates would begin rolling out in the “coming weeks.”

Earlier this week, Google’s Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop release date arrived for owners of several Nexus variants including the Nexus 5, Nexus 10, and Nexus 7. The update, one of the biggest in the history of the Android operating system, takes Nexus users from Android 4.4.4 KitKat to Android 5.0 Lollipop and it delivers a number of new features including the update’s new Material Design. It now also looks like the Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop update is troubling Nexus users.

Nexus Android update bugs aren’t anything new. Android software bugs have plagued Nexus smartphones and tablets for years. Last year’s Android 4.4 KitKat update, for instance, delivered a number of issues, many of which persisted into this week’s Android 5.0 Lollipop release. Android 5.0 Lollipop’s change log is extensive and it fixes some lingering Android 4.4 KitKat issues but Nexus users are saying that it has brought some problems of its own.

Nexus5-Android5-3

Google’s Nexus forums are typically a flashpoint for Nexus users dealing with Android issues and we’re starting to see users complain about an assortment of issues after making the move from Android 4.4 KitKat to Android 5.0 Lollipop. We should note that we’re not yet seeing the same volume that we saw with last year’s Android 4.4 KitKat update which could be a product of the Android 5.0 Lollipop update itself or the fact that the Android 5.0 update is pushing out extremely slow to Nexus users. Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 LTE owners have yet to get the update.

Nexus 5, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10 users are detailing a number of potential problems with the update and they range from issues with cellular data to Wi-Fi to noticeable lag and sluggishness after the update. Nexus users are complaining about broken Wi-Fi connections, users are experiencing abnormal crashes when plugged into a charger, lag after installing apps that require a log in, various issues with cellular data, corrupted data after installing the software, a number of issues with Exchange service, and Nexus 9 users are complaining about an odd error message after trying to install the bug fix update.

Fortunately, many of these issues come with possible fixes. Nexus users experiencing odd sluggishness and lag have shut off the Google Now Launcher and it seems to have improved overall speed. Moderators have also relayed a possible fix from Google telling Nexus users to clear their recovery cache partition to see if it helps performance. Those dealing with Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop problems right off the bat would be wise to monitor Google’s Nexus Product Forums because they are typically full of potential fixes for early issues.

We haven’t run into any major Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop problems ourselves though Android bugs have a habit of lurking in the shadows for a day or two after the initial release.

Nexus5-Android5

We should note that many Nexus users experiencing Android 5.0 Lollipop issues are flashing manually instead of waiting for the OTA to roll out. Those who aren’t familiar with the sideloading process are encouraged to wait for the OTA update. Manually flashing can have untold effects on the stability of Google’s Android operating system and often, users experiencing issues will need to perform a factory reset to get back to peak performance.

As the Android 5.0 Lollipop update continues to roll out, we’ll more than likely hear about more Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop problems. Nexus users will, for the moment, need to rely on the community for fixes because Google has not yet announced a bug fix update for its new update. That doesn’t mean that one won’t arrive in the future though.

AndroidWorld’s spotted a potential Android 5.1 release lurking about though without a confirmation from Google, it remains unconfirmed. Google historically has rolled out fairly swift bug fix updates to alleviate initial issues with major software upgrades but the company rarely announces them ahead of time which means that for now, Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 users dealing with Android 5.0 problems will be on their own.

Google still owes Nexus users several more Android 5.0 Lollipop updates. The Nexus 4 Lollipop update is set to arrive sometime in the near future with Nexus 7 LTE and Google Play Edition updates scheduled for arrival down the road as well.

Could we please get someone who actually uses Android as their daily driver like Cory Gunther, instead of Apple fanboy Adam Mills to report on Android?

His constant need to spread exaggerated FUD is not only tiresome and disingenuous, but it’s boring.

Apparently, you missed this part of the article :

“We haven’t run into any major Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop problems ourselves.”

I can understand that. It was buried inside the rest of the FUD.

No OS launch is bug free, but the level of exaggeration and FUD by Adam Mills is overbearing, repetitive, and tiring.

We’re better off with objective writers.

Most of these are probably people coming from the developer preview that didn’t do a clean install. I could see where that would cause quite a few problems with radios and differences in APIs.

Well I have 2 absolutely stock nexus 7’s. One home, one at work. Both received their OTA updates and both are now useless. Keyboard slow, WiFi slooooooow, graphics lag like an old 486 – both have become unusual. Voice keyboard so slow, its faster to type on the slow keyboard and 2 days ago I was raving about how brilliant voice typing was.

Exactly the same here with the N7. I’m not all that tech savvy, but the irony is that the update arrived literally a moment after I cleared the cache partition to try to speed the system up. And it’s way more unusable now than it was before.

My absolutely stock Nexus 7 (2012) is unusable after the OTA yesterday. Google forum is filled with the same complaint. Fixes mentioned in the article apparently don’t do much from the forum responses.

I have just installed the android 5 update on my nexus 7 and I’m now having several problems with my apps!! Most annoying is Facebook which for no apparent reason decides to turn off after several minutes of browsing and puts me back to top of messages which I have already seen!! And several games which either won’t load/play or are now really glitchy!! Totally rubbish update!! Want to go back to old format which was problem free!! As the saying goes “if it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it” !!!!

I just tried turning off the Google Now Launcher (in the Google app, under settings) and it did wonders to make my Nexus 7 (2012) run like it’s supposed to despite the notorious Lollipop lag! I didn’t think it would work since I don’t even use the app itself, but I’ll be damned if my tablet isn’t working a hell of a lot better now!

You were lucky that OTA worked, on my Nexus 7 2012 it downloads the update, restarts the tablet, starts loading and then it goes belly up with just stating “Error” and nothign else. After 6 tries, I tried to push some buttons and noticed a message claiming the font “NamunGothic.ttf” contains unexpected content!!!

I have no idea what that means.

Lollipop on my Nexus 5 is useless so far. Can’t open Kindle app, Bridge Base app in addition to many others. To my mind has made unnecessary changes and messed up the system.

    Hi
I have both The Nexus 5 & 7. I have received the update lollypop to my nexus 7 but not my nexus 5. Is there a reason why that is.

    Thanks

The Lollipop has rendered my Nexus 7 to the point of unusable. I am shocked that the update was not thoroughly worked to ensure it would not cause the problems as their customer base is dealing with. My issue was solved by purchasing a Samsung Galaxy! I hope for other users Google steps up and quickly corrects the gremlins of the Lollipop update

Glad to know I am not the only one with bizarre latency/lag/slow keyboard problems.
After just updating to lollipop my keyboard was so slow I did a clean install of it just to find out the keyboard is still slow as a snail. Besides that there is also the automatic deletion of whole words after pressing backspace once. (Which is even slower than writing).

Hopefully this gets solved in an update.
