iPhone 8 Concept Takes Us Way Too Far Into the Future

The iPhone 6 is still a fairly new device, but new renders have taken things to the next level and already have us thinking several years into the future with some iPhone 8 concepts.

The year is 2018, and America is thriving under President Hillary Clinton. The iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, and the iPhone 7s have been added to Apple’s repertoire, and the iPhone 8 is set to release tomorrow. Here’s what the leaks suggest the latest iPhone will look like.

Several renders have appeared on Behance from designer Steel Drake that show us what the iPhone 8 could look like. Essentially, it looks similar to the iPhone 6, but with a futuristic twist and a two-tone color design.

The device in the drawings doesn’t appear to be any thinner than the iPhone 6, which isn’t too surprising considering that you can only go so thin before you can’t go any thinner — at least with today’s technology.

What’s perhaps most unique about this rendered design is the wrap-around glass panel that goes all the way around the device horizontally, with metal sides to finish off the aesthetics. It actually doesn’t look half bad, and we imagine that companies will have had perfected wrap-around glass panels by 2018.

Other than that, though, the renders take a lot of the same design cues from the iPhone 6, including the volume buttons, speaker grille, etc. However, the camera lens on the iPhone 8 no longer protrudes from the device’s body and is flush with the back of the phone, and the power button on the side appears to be slightly shorter and stubbier on this concept, suggesting that users really don’t need that big of a power button, which we’d have to agree with to some extent.

Of course, the only thing missing is specs, which is something you really can’t draw up with Photoshop, but instead is left to the world’s most powerful graphics chip: the imagination. The iPhone 8 will no doubt come with some impressive specs, and the camera should be something that will put most point-and-shoot cameras to shame, and maybe even some lower-end DLSRs.

Of course, it’s way to early to even think about the iPhone 8, but rumors about next year’s iPhone have already been making the rounds.

Whether it’ll be called the iPhone 6S or the iPhone 7, it’s rumored that next year’s iPhone could come with a glasses-free 3D display. The technology would not be able to use the same display technology that’s currently on the iPhone 6, meaning a completely new display would be in order for the iPhone 6S or iPhone 7.

Something like this is certainly possible, but from what we’ve already seen from the Amazon Fire Phone, consumers aren’t that excited about such a technology, as the Fire Phone has experienced poor sales from the very beginning.

While we would take this rumor with a huge grain of salt, Apple has already dabbled in 3D display technology of sorts, in the form of iOS 7’s and iOS 8’s Parallax Effect feature that provides the illusion that the screen is in 3D.

The parallax effect was first introduced in iOS 7 and is a feature that also made its way to iOS 8. Essentially, it gives your iPhone or iPad’s home screen a neat 3D look, so when you move your device around in your hand while keeping your head still, it looks like you’re looking “around” the app icons onto the wallpaper, almost like you’re looking through a window out onto the iOS 8 world.

However, the feature is really nothing more than the gyroscope and accelerometer working together to create the illusion that you’re looking through a 3D window, and while it can be impressive for some users, most users will lose the wow factor in just a few days, hence the possible reason why 3D displays simply aren’t wanted on smartphones.
