Nexus 6 Release: 7 Last Minute Details

Published

on

Google’s brand new Nexus 6 has finally been released in the United States. The official Nexus 6 release date was never actually announced, as Google is allowing each of the five major carriers to release the new flagship smartphone throughout the month, and your first chance is today from Sprint.

The new Nexus 6 was announced last month on October 15th along with the Nexus 9 tablet, a Nexus Player, and the completely redesigned and improved Android 5.0 Lollipop software update. It’s been a long few months of rumors, news, and waiting, but the release has finally started.

The Nexus 6 release date and pre-order situation has been a bit of a mess with details being extremely scarce, inventory and stock empty from both Google and Motorola, and no word from most carriers. However, everything finally came together this week and below is seven last minute details for prospective Nexus 6 buyers regarding the release.

Nexus6-5

T-Mobile was expected to be the first carrier in the United States to offer the new Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 devices. Confirming on launch day back in October that they’d have them both in stores and online starting November 12th. And while that was the day Android 5.0 Lollipop was released, T-Mobile delayed the launch date.

If you’re considering buying the new Nexus 6 you’ll want to start by checking out our full review linked to above, then reading the information below.

Nexus 6 Release Date

The official Nexus 6 release date is technically today, November 14th. As today is the first chance buyers can get the new flagship smartphone. After T-Mobile delayed its launch, Sprint has the 32GB Midnight Blue Nexus 6 in stores and online as of today. It’ll run buyers a crazy $299 with a 2-year contract, or you can use Sprint Easy Pay and make monthly payments.

Reports and rumors have continued to surface regarding when it would actually arrive, and it’s now finally here. At least for some.

T-Mobile Nexus 6

As we stated above, T-Mobile pushed back its Nexus 6 release from November 12th to November 19th. Meaning you won’t be able to get the new flagship smartphone from them until next week. However, this move was an attempt to make a better buying experience for its customers. They’ve stated on Twitter more stock will be widely available, making for a smooth and hassle free release date.

The delay was unfortunate, but this should mean customers will be able to walk into a T-Mobile store nearby next week and walk out with the new phone, or order the 64GB version from T-Mobile.com.

Pre-Orders Now Shipping

Yesterday we mentioned that some Nexus 6 pre-orders had started shipping early from Motorola.com, which were originally scheduled to arrive on November 19th. And while they did ship earlier than expected, Motorola.com pre-orders are coming from China, and are still expected to arrive on November 19th. Even those who pre-ordered on the second wave.

Some are also seeing expected delivery dates of November 20th, but that all comes down to when your order was placed, and your location for shipping reasons. This is sooner than we expected, but many who pre-ordered later or on Wednesday when more stock arrived have yet to see shipping confirmations, meaning they may not arrive until the November 27th date users are reporting.

Google Play Orders

Those who were lucky enough to pre-order the Nexus 6 from the Google Play Store when they opened for an entire 2-3 minutes back on October 29th, we’re hearing those have shipped as well. This is great news, as the Play Store originally said “shipped by November 21st” and not delivered by. Meaning Google’s speeding up the timeline and getting them out the door today, possibly in time for Monday or Tuesday delivery based on shipping options.

Multiple sources and readers have pointed out that Google’s started charging cards, and buyers are getting notifications from the Play Store. Shipment confirmations should quickly follow, with handsets arriving on doorsteps sooner rather than later.

Nexus6-2

It’s worth noting that the Nexus 6 from the Google Play Store or Motorola are unlocked and should work with any major US carrier, including Verizon Wireless. Yes, our Nexus 6 review unit works with AT&T and Verizon both with no problems.

AT&T Nexus 6 Release

The AT&T Nexus 6 release date is rumored to be November 18th. The carrier starting officially taking pre-orders yesterday, but sold out rather fast online. AT&T stores are still accepting pre-orders as of this morning, so that’s likely the best option for potential buyers. Once they make an official date known, vs the 18th date showing on the pre-order page, we’ll update with more information.

US Cellular and Verizon Wireless

If you’re looking for the Nexus 6 on Verizon Wireless or US Cellular, sorry, but we have bad news. Neither carrier has announced any details. Earlier reports from the Google Play Store itself said all carriers (but Verizon) will release the phone before the end of November.

This means that either Google is still working with Verizon Wireless regarding a release date and timeline, or Verizon won’t be releasing the new flagship Android 5.0 Lollipop smartphone until December. The company recently released the Moto DROID Turbo, which is taking priority, but expect more details shortly regarding the Verizon Nexus 6 release date. Verizon walks to the beat of their own drum, so we’ll simply have to wait and see.

All things aside, the Nexus 6 is finally here and coming to carrier shelves and buyers doorsteps soon.
