Nexus 6 Price Slashed in the U.S.

Published

on

When Google announced the brand new Nexus 6 smartphone back in mid October after months of reports, leaks and rumors, one thing that shocked many potential buyers (aside from the sheer size) was the price tag. The Nexus 6 is the most expensive Nexus device to date, and even more buyers were shocked when Sprint added a $50 premium to the phone when it was released last week.

The Nexus 6 release date was officially last week after months of waiting through reports and rumors, arriving in Sprint stores and online starting November 14th. Nearly one month after the October 15th announcement along with the Nexus 9 and Nexus Player. Today though, we’ve received good news as prices have already been slashed.

Google’s flagship smartphone rocks all the top-tier specs many have come to expect from a premium Android flagship smartphone, and that all came with a premium price tag too. Offering the 32GB model for $649 and the 64GB version for $699. However, Sprint was charging more than the rest, and today they’ve back tracked a bit and discounted the phone by $50.

Currently Google’s new Nexus 6 is available from Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T in the United States, with release dates still up in the air with US Cellular and Verizon Wireless. Sprint was first to offer the phone, but the price was even higher than expected, and $50 more than T-Mobile or AT&T were asking.

Rather than match the Google Play Store, Motorola.com or AT&T pricing, Sprint is offering the Nexus 6 for $299 with a new 2-year contract, and $696 outright. That’s $696 for the 32GB version, and not the 64GB flavor. Meaning you’ll pay a few dollars more for 64GB of storage if purchased on AT&T or from the Google Play Store.

Today though, Sprint has announced a $50 price cut on the Nexus 6, pricing it inline with the rest of the options available stateside. Lowering the on-contract price to $249, and making the outright no contract price $648. Actually $1 less than the rest of the options available.

We’re not sure what Sprint was thinking with the $50 premium, or why they thought buyers would spend $50 more for the exact same smartphone, but they’ve come around and lowered it.

Now, Sprint’s Nexus 6 with no contract for $648 is the lowest price available, but you’re only saving a dollar or so, but it’s worth mentioning. Then the $0 down Easy Pay prices will go down from $29 to $27 a month for 24 months.

So what about all the eager customers and buyers that overpaid? Those who spent the full $696 or paid the $299 on-contact price will be happy to know that Sprint is refunding the $50 difference. If you bought the Nexus 6 at Sprint from November 14-18th you’ll be receiving a $50 credit on your next bill. At least according to AndroidPolice.

It appears that Sprint has also lowered the price of last years popular LG G2 by $139, for those interested in that flagship device that’s still extremely capable.

As for the rest of the carriers in the United States, no pricing changes have been announced as they’re asking the same price as Google and Motorola. We’re still waiting on carrier announcement and release date details on the Verizon Nexus 6, and from US Cellular, and will update once any surface.

Removing a $50 surcharge warrants a headline announcing that the price has been “slashed”? Wow.
