Moto X Android 5.0 Lollipop Update Coming Soon

Published

on

One of the first smartphones to receive the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop update was the new Moto X 2014 model released earlier this year, and now we’re hearing it’s coming soon for more users. More specifically, those on Verizon Wireless.

In 2013 the original Moto X was among the first smartphones updated to the latest Android 4.4 KitKat when Google released in back in November, and it appears that the same will hold true for the new Moto X and Google’s latest Android release. Carrier updates are coming soon, all starting with Verizon Wireless.

The new Moto X (2014) was released in September on all major carriers in the United States and around the globe, and if the latest news is accurate, it will be one of the first devices updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop. Today we received word that Verizon is already in the final testing phases, and other carriers could be next.

Earlier this month Motorola posted the Moto X Android 5.0 update release notes, then quickly removed the page, but this was just a soak test for the Pure Edition Moto X. The official over the air update arrived a few days later, and now the same process has started this weekend for the Verizon Wireless Moto X 2014.

Motorola does what the company calls a “soak test” which is a final testing phase done by regular smartphone users that have signed up for the Motorola Feedback Network. A program which allows regular individuals to test final release software and device updates ahead of the nationwide release. This is the final testing phase before Motorola and each respective carrier push out the updates to all owners.

According to Droid-Life the Verizon Moto X (2014) Android 5.0 Lollipop update has started the soak test, with invites going out this weekend, and actual updated software arriving this week. That means that those in the Feedback Network can expect the Moto X Lollipop update this week, and regular users may see it before the end of the week, or in the first few days of December next week.

This is good news for all Moto X owners, not just those on Verizon. As last year all major carriers pushed out the update to Android 4.4 KitKat within weeks of the release, following Verizon’s lead. We can expect the same broad rollout over the next 2-3 weeks for all Moto X owners in the United States.

It’s also worth mentioning the DROID Ultra received updates a few weeks after the Moto X on Verizon last year, so new DROID Turbo owners can be looking forward to something similar in early December.

Once the new Verizon Moto X update starts rolling out to testers we’ll be sure to update regarding the Android 5.0 Lollipop release, as well as once Verizon posts the official changelog. That usually is quickly followed with a global software release for all Verizon smartphone owners. Expect Android 5.0 Lollipop for the regular Moto X (2014) soon, and other carriers to follow shortly thereafter.
