5 Reasons to Skip the Verizon Note Edge on Release Day

Published

on

There are plenty of reasons to wait for the Verizon Galaxy Note Edge release date but not everyone should buy the device when it first arrives. Here, we take a look at five people that will want to pass on the Verizon Galaxy Note Edge when it finally arrives on shelves.

In September, Samsung announced the all new Galaxy Note Edge, a concept phone that compliments its new Galaxy Note 4. The Galaxy Note Edge specs include a curved Quad HD resolution display, a 2.7 GHz Quad-core Snapdragon 805 with 3GB of RAM, Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Samsung TouchWiz, 16MP camera with Optical Image Stabilization, massive battery, and a thin 8.3mm frame. It also comes with an S Pen stylus like the Galaxy Note 4.

While the Galaxy Note Edge was announced back in September, it took a few months for it to arrive on carriers inside the United States. AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile are now selling the Galaxy Note Edge through their physical retail locations and through their online portals, offering consumers a solid alternative to the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. The U.S. Galaxy Note Edge release date isn’t over though.

U.S. Cellular and Verizon have also confirmed Galaxy Note Edge releases though neither carrier has issued specific release date details. It’s left potential buyers on edge and we’ve spoken to several people who are on the fence about buying now or waiting for the Verizon Galaxy Note Edge to arrive. We don’t blame them. After all, it’s been nearly three months since the device first arrived.

When Verizon finally does announce a Galaxy Note Edge release date, some of you might be tempted to jump. For many of you, that will work out. You’ve done your homework and you’ve prepared in the weeks since its announcement. For others, buying the Verizon Galaxy Note Edge on its release date is going to be a mistake.

If You Haven’t Gone Hands-on

If you get to the Verizon Galaxy Note Edge release date, and you haven’t spent some quality time with the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge, you have no business buying the phone. As we’ve pointed out many times, the Galaxy Note Edge is an extremely unique phone, an expensive phone, and one that should not be an impulse buy.

For starters, the phone is massive. It sports a 5.6-inch display which means that it’s going to be much bigger than your average phone. It also comes with an S Pen stylus. Many Galaxy Note users wind up never using the S Pen stylus in the months after buying the phone. You need to decide if you’re going to or not before you pick this phone up.

Then, you have the unique curved display. While it’s a neat little addition, you’re going to need to decide if you absolutely need it. Most people won’t. You’ll also want to consider the fact that there aren’t a wide range of applications that can utilize the display. Until developers start taking advantage of the SDK, the screen can’t live up to its full potential. You need to consider that.

You also need to get a feel for the software. This version of TouchWiz is different than the version of the Galaxy S. Verizon’s software set is also going to differ from a carrier like AT&T’s.

There’s no rush here and given the device’s expensive price tag, there’s no reason to buy this device without having gone hands-on. And you won’t be able to do that until it comes out. Thirty minutes with this phone in a store, in our eyes, isn’t going to be enough.

If You Haven’t Researched Carriers

Verizon’s isn’t the only carrier offering the Galaxy Note Edge. AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and U.S. Cellular are either carrying, or set to carry, the Galaxy Note Edge down the road. All of these networks come with strengths and weaknesses. And all of these carriers come with different levels of customer service. You need to look into all of this before buying.

If you get to the Verizon Galaxy Note Edge release date and you haven’t determined which carrier provides the best coverage in your primary area, skip the release day and continue looking into it. If you haven’t researched customer service for each carrier by the time the Verizon Note Edge release date arrives, skip it.

You absolutely need to have a carrier picked out before buying this phone. For many of you, Verizon may not be the best option. You’ll want to be sure that it is before picking this bad boy up.

If You Haven’t Researched Data Plans

You’ll also need to take a look into the data plans and pricing structure that each carrier provides. For instance, you’ll want to take a look at AT&T Next vs. Verizon Edge. You’ll want to compare off-contract price points to determine which carrier offers the most value. You’ll want to explore T-Mobile’s UnCarrier bonuses. There are some big differences between all five major carriers and you’ll need to know about those before buying.

If You Haven’t Researched Competitors

Do not buy the Verizon Galaxy Note Edge on its release date if you haven’t put any effort into researching its competitors. As we’ve pointed out many times, looking at a spec sheet isn’t research. Go hands on with top devices, get acquainted with them, familiarize with their software. These will all help you come to a much better decision. These reviews will help you get started.

Ultimately, you’re going to want to go hands on with all of these phones, particularly the Galaxy Note 4. The Galaxy Note 4 is essentially the same phone as the Galaxy Note Edge, it just doesn’t come with the curved display. It also doesn’t come with the same expensive price tag, making it a device that’s worthy of your consideration.

If you haven’t ruled all of these phones out before the Verizon Galaxy Note Edge release date, skip it.

If You Haven’t Found a Home for Your Current Phone

If you haven’t found a spot for your current smartphone, skip the Verizon Galaxy Note Edge release date. There’s one big reason why. Selling your current smartphone will help you recoup some of the Galaxy Note Edge’s cost. We still don’t have a price point but there’s simply no way Verizon offers a steep discount for this phone.

So, if you’ve yet to do any research at Gazelle or any of the other sites that offer solid trade-in value for old phones, you need to do that before the Verizon Galaxy Note Edge release date. If you don’t have a plan in place, skip the release date and wait until you can get top dollar for your device. It’ll pay off in the long run.

This article is retarded. Mentions 5 of the stupidest reasons to not pick up the note edge. Never mind the fact that its a “limited concept” device making it 50x harder to have future repairs made. Never mind the fact that if the note screen does not take off, consumers will be left with essentially a useless edge screen that’s never going to be really utilized. Not to mention the fact that, developers wont be as motivated to make new accessories and cases that fit this.

I picked up the phone on release day after playing with the display version countless times @ AT&T. Only ended up adding an extra $18 to my monthly plan to get it. Use the S-pen ALL the time and the side screen display consolidates all my most used apps so I can keep my most used widgets on other screens. Ergonomic for this left handed person too. I seriously love this phone its THE most useful device I’ve had to date, it is my first Note phone though.. Addicted to S-note and S-pen.
