Assassin’s Creed Unity Buyers Get Free Add-ons

Ubisoft, developers of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, failed to stop strange bugs and connectivity issues from marring the release of Assassin’s Creed Unity earlier this month. It’s hoping that a new title update and free downloadable content will convey just how sorry it is for releasing the game with so many bugs.

Ubisoft Montreal & Toronto CEO Yannis Mallat took to the official Assassin’s Creed blog to announce the free add-ons this morning. In that statement he acknowledges that Assassin’s Creed Unity’s quality was “diminished by bugs and unexpected technical issues” at launch.  He also acknowledges that there’s still some work to be done to get the game performing flawlessly for everyone.

“We’ve been working hard to fix the problems players are reporting, and the patches we have released so far have resolved many of them.” Today, Ubisoft is releasing a third title update for all versions of Assassin’s Creed Unity.

Absolutely everyone who purchases Assassin’s Creed Unity for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC will receive access to the Assassin’s Creed Unity Dead Kings DLC at no additional cost. Ubisoft’ s wording indicates that this isn’t a timed deal either, meaning even users who purchase the game now will get this add-on content-free of charge. It may seem like a small gesture, but it’s one of huge consequence.

Originally, Ubisoft planned to sell the Dead Kings downloadable content separately from the game itself. Dead Kings adds an entirely separate campaign for users to play on-top of the campaign included in Assassin’s Creed Unity. It’s set in 1794, shortly after the initial campaign ends. Instead of being in Paris, Dead Kings takes place in Saint Dennis. Players have to traverse a large network of underground tunnels, networks and caves. Saint Dennis happens to be where French kings were buried for years. Users who purchased the Assassins’ Creed Unity Season Pass were promised the Dead Kings DLC plus Assassin’s Creed Chronicles China. Chronicles China is the series’ first foray into side-scrolling and platforming. More than 30 add-ons were to be included in the DLC.

Assassin’s Creed Unity was released in early November after being delayed. As such, there is a large amount of gamers may have already purchased the Season Pass. Most sites have now stopped selling the season pass since Ubisoft plans to distribute the DLC for free. Those users will be able to pick out an Ubisoft made game of their choice. Options will include The Crew, Far Cry 4, Watch Dogs, Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, Ryman Legends and Just Dance 2015.Assassin’s Creed Unity Season Pass holders can’t pick out their free games yet, but they will soon, promises Ubisoft.

Giving away free downloadable content that would have cost upwards of $20 is a great way to apologize to series fans for releasing what was very clearly bug-ridden game. There were a lot of people excited for this game; Assassin’s Creed Unity was intended to be the rebirth of the franchise. The game contains a new engine, better graphics and huge changes in gameplay when compared with even Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. Giving users free downloadable content isn’t likely to encourage series fans to pre-order next year’s edition of Assassin’s Creed though. Ubisoft is going to have to focus on delivering a decent experience for a long time before fans are willing to put this experience behind them.

Update Three for Assassin’s Creed Unity is rolling out to Sony’s PS4 today. Ubisoft says it’ll be available on the Xbox One and PC sometime this week. Included are fixes for frame rate issues, incorrectly working haystacks and more. Ubisoft has made it appoint to address the issues plaguing Assassin’s Creed Unity’s multiplayer experience too.

Assassin’s Creed Unity is on sale now for $59.99.

Is the free game thing also for consoles or just PC?
