How to Keep Your iPhone Cable from Falling Off Your Desk

If you want quick access to your iPhone’s charging cable while at your desk, here’s how you can mount the cable to your desk without it falling off the edge and onto the floor.

We’ve all been there: You go to charge your iPhone only to discover that the Lightning cable fell behind the desk, and you now have to begin a fun game of either reaching behind the desk to fetch it, or get on your hands and knees and venture below the desk to retrieve the cable. It’s an annoying first-world problem and it’s pretty humorous when it happens to someone else, but it’s definitely not something you laugh about when it happens to you.

Usually, people can think of some temporary ways to keep their cables from falling off their desk, whether it’d be putting a paperweight on top of the cable or balancing the weight just right so that gravity doesn’t take it away. These quick solutions are mostly temporary, though.

However, there are a few tricks you can use and several cheap accessories you can buy so that your iPhone’s charging cable stays put on your desk, without the risk of it ever falling off.

Cable-Holding Accessories

It’s not just you that’s sick of their iPhone cable constantly falling from their desk. It’s a big problem, and many companies have addressed the issue. This means that there are quite a few accessories available that hold your cables on your to prevent them from falling off the side, but still allow for maneuverability.

Cable Drop is my favorite accessory for this. For just a few dollars, you get a set of Cable Drops that you can stick to your desk and they prevent your cables from falling off the edge of your desk, but they still leave room for you to pull on your cables and maneuver them around.

Another accessory I like is theĀ Quirky Cordies, which gives you just one main piece to attach to your desk and has room to fit four different cables between the slots that hold them in place when you’re not using them.

If you want to buy a cable-holding accessory that’s probably available at most stores, you can check out 3M’s Command Cord Clips, which are mostly meant for keeping cords in place on the wall, but they can also work well on your desk.

Take Advantage of Household Items

If you’re too cheap to buy these accessories, we don’t blame you, especially since you can replicate the functionality with basic everyday household items.

The most popular option would be using the trusty binder clip, where you attach it to the edge of your desk and feed your iPhone cable through the metal handles. From there, the binder clip holds the cable in place and prevents it from falling off the desk.

You can even combine simple magnets with binder clips to get rid of the metal handles and aim for a more aesthetic look.

Even something as simple as a bread tab from your bread bag can be used as a cable catcher on the end of your desk. It’s probably not the best-looking solution, but for next to nothing, you can prevent a major cable problem from ever happening again.

You can even go as far as creating nearly-invisible cable catchers that blend in with your desk so that they’re hard to see, that way it doesn’t ruin the design of your workspace if you’re concerned about that kind of thing.

I’ve also heard of iPhone owners using little strips of velcro that they attach to their charging cable and then the other piece gets attached to the desk, which seems to work out pretty well.

In the end, the options are nearly limitless, as there are so many different products you can use to solve such a frustrating problem. Plus, you don’t have to spend a lot of money if you don’t want to.
