Nexus Android 5.0.1 Lollipop Update Release Starts

on

Google’s Android 5.0.1 Lollipop update is rolling out now to select Nexus users including owners of the Nexus 9 and Nexus 7. Google’s Android 5.0.1 OTA will roll out slowly but those that know how to manually install Nexus Android updates are now able to do so thanks to files from Google’s servers.

Earlier this week, Google deposited a brand new Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop update into the Android Open Source Project. That update is Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, a follow up to the Android 5.0 Lollipop update that deployed in November, and a small bug fix update that’s started rolling out to owners of several Nexus devices today.

Yesterday, Google released Android 5.0.1 factory images for the Nexus 9 Wi-Fi, Nexus 10 and Nexus 7 2013 Wi-Fi. Over-the-Air updates typically follow close behind the release of factory images and right on cue, Google’s started pushing out the trio of Android 5.0.1 updates. These represent Google’s first Android 5.0.1 updates though there’s a chance that the update could more Nexus devices as time moves on.

Nexus-9

Google’s Android 5.0.1 OTA is rolling out to the Nexus 9 Wi-Fi, Nexus 10, and Nexus 7 2013 Wi-Fi and users with those devices will want to take a look to see if the software is available. Users can check a couple of times a day through settings but Nexus users are advised not to try and force the update through Google Framework Services. This “trick” can and will cause major issues down the road.

Those who don’t want to wait for the OTA to arrive do have an option. The updates for the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 have been discovered on Google’s servers which means that they can now be sideloaded ahead of the OTA. The Nexus 9 file hasn’t been discovered yet though we expect it to be tracked down in a matter of hours.

It’s not clear if Google plans to roll out this update to the Nexus 5, Nexus 4 or the cellular versions of its Nexus tablets though we suspect that we’ll see updates land for these devices in the near future. For one, Android 5.0.1 is a bug fix update and Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 5 owners are dealing with an assortment of issues.

Nexus9-7

Google also owes Android 5.0 Lollipop updates to its cellular versions of the Nexus 7 2012 and Nexus 7 2013 and there’s little chance that it offers an older version of the software to users. Instead, it will likely push out this updated version of Android 5.0 Lollipop. It’s still not clear when the company plans to release these updates.

It’s also not clear what this roll out means for Google Play Edition users. Google still plans to roll out several updates for Google Play Edition devices including updates to the HTC One M8, HTC One M7 and Samsung Galaxy S4. Android versions for those updates remain unconfirmed though there’s a chance that they too will get the bump up to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop.

Nexus9-5

Android 5.0.1 Lollipop appears to be a small update geared towards fixing some of the issues that popped up with the original Android 5.0 Lollipop update. Nexus users have been complaining for weeks about an number of issues including battery life woes, Wi-Fi problems, and some system wide updates that have caused headaches in the weeks since the update’s release.

While Android 5.0.1 Lollipop could remedy some of these issues, there’s a good chance that an update that’s just a few weeks removed from the initial roll out won’t fix everything. If that’s the case, Nexus users will need to rely on third-party fixes and support from forums and fellow Nexus users. Google’s known for pushing out one initial bug fix update but it’s not known for pushing out several.

Look for these roll outs to continue into December as Google drives to get Android 5.0 Lollipop on as many devices as it can before the end of the year.

Got the OTA for 5.0.1 on my Nexus 7 2013 this afternoon. Was on Kitkat and never got 5.0. No issues so far. Still waiting for my father’s Nexus 7 2012 (still on Kitkat)

Nexus 7 2012 worked like a charm BEFORE Lollipop update, now its unusable and Google just ignores my pleas for help. WARNING… If you do not have the 5.0 update, Do NOT GET IT!! My tablet is now nothing more than a paperweight.

Lollipop Log, 420, Dec 5th: I have still yet to receive 5.0 for Wi-Fi aboard the Nexus 7 2-0-1-4. It’s now getting cold in the hall and I fear I’ve been forgotten. I’ve tried several times to reboot the system checking manually for updates, alas no response. I may try open airlock & fastboot but afraid of getting sucked out into space. Must go eat what few Kit Kats I have left to survive, will return if strength permits.
